Using Micro-Books to Build Brand Recognition

alt="Using Micro-Books to Build Brand Recognition" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/kindle-500x374_c.jpg" />

According to January 2014 href="http://www.pewinternet.org/Reports/2014/E-Reading-Update.aspx" target="_blank">Pew Internet report, the number of people reading ebooks is steadily growing. It is up to 28% from 23% last year. The report states:

“The January 2014 survey, conducted just after the 2013 holiday gift-giving season, produced evidence that e-book reading devices are spreading through the population. Some 42% of adults now own tablet computers, up from 34% in September. And the number of adults who own an e-book reading device like a Kindle or Nook reader jumped from 24% in September to 32% after the holidays.”

Just over half of all Americans own some type of mobile device, such as a tablet, iPad or an ereader like a Kindle. In addition to those numbers, one out of every five people in the world own a smart phone. What do these numbers mean for your business? You can reach those who own ereaders as well as those who are using smart phones in a unique and fun way through micro-books.

What Is a Microbook?

A microbook is a longer book that is broken into short, quick chapters and sent out in micro-installments that keep your business in front of the customer.

The idea behind microbooks is a fast read. Keep in mind that you are trying to reach readers who are carrying mobile devices (Nook, iPad, iPhone). They may need a quick read as they commute on the train to and from work, while waiting for an interview, in a doctor’s office or one of the may other times each day people find themselves with down time and pull out the trusted mobile device to stay entertained.

What Should Your Book Be About?

Although traditionally, micro-books have been novels, you could certainly offer nonfiction in the same format. Better yet, think about your business model and how you might create a character that speaks to your customers. For example, if you own an auto body shop, you could create a novel about a customer who gets into auto mishaps on a regular basis or write a soap opera style series that is centered around the characters who work in an auto body shop.

The only limit is your imagination.

Also, keep in mind that installments should be very short, so you can utilize social media like Twitter or Facebook.

“A microblogging novel, also known as a micro novel, is a fictional work or novel written and distributed in small parts, defined by the system it is published within. A ‘Twitter novel’ would be published in chapters of 140 characters or less, and a ‘Facebook novel’ might be limited by Facebook’s ‘read more’ limitations of 300 characters.” – href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microblogging_novel" target="_blank">Wikipedia

src="//www.youtube.com/embed/rIGTcth-kZ4" height="422" width="750" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0">

Shorter excerpts also lend themselves to SMS messages. The trend of cell phone novels started in Japan in 2003 and has grown so popular in Asia that many novels are turned into this format. In fact, one of my own novels was purchased by a Japanese publisher, translated and sent out this way. It was successful enough that they turned Finding Ms. Right into a manga comic in October of 2013.

According to the href="http://articles.latimes.com/2010/feb/09/world/la-fg-japan-phone-novel9-2010feb09" target="_blank">LA Times, “One teenager who wrote a three-volume novel on her phone has gone on to sell more than 110,000 paperback copies, grossing more than 1,000 in sales.”

What businesses can learn from this model is that digital novels presented in new and trendy ways are on the rise. In addition, you can send out your book in multiple formats. If you keep it to 140 characters or less you could:

  • href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/web-business-ideas/how-to-use-micro-blogging-to-gain-new-visitors/" target="_blank">Microblog (on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.)
  • Include a post on your own blog along with an image or interesting video
  • Send out the segment via SMS

How Should You Deliver It to Readers?

Micro-installments are the key to microbooks, as mentioned above. In the article href="www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/wordpress-blog/bringing-tweets-into-your-wordpress-site/" target="_blank">Bringing Tweets Into Your WordPress Site, Jerry Low discusses how to automate WordPress and include what you’ve posted on Twitter in your blog’s sidebar. This is a great way to keep readers updated on the next segment of your microbook without using precious time and resources posting on more than one platform. In addition, you can use href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/how-to-save-time-in-blog-marketing-with-ifttt/" target="_blank">IFTTT to set up additional automated posts. For example, if you post an excerpt from your book on Twitter, you can set up IFTTT so that it automatically goes to your blog, to Facebook and to an SMS list.

Another option, if teeny tiny installments aren’t quite your thing is to create small books of 1,000-2,000 words and upload them to SmashWords and Amazon Self-Publishing for Kindle. Smashwords is a fantastic way to offer free installments to readers, because they convert the book into formats for the different e-readers.

  • Nook
  • Mobi (Kindle)
  • Sony Reader
  • Palm Doc
  • RTF
  • PDF
  • ePub (for iPhone, etc.)
  • Read online via Smashwords (HTML)

Getting the Most Mileage Out of the Book

The great thing about using microbooks for promotion is that you can create one pretty inexpensively or hire someone to ghost write it for you. If you have very specific knowledge, you might find it easier to write the book yourself and hire someone to edit it for you.

Bonnie Daneker was interviewed by Valerie Peterson over at href="http://publishing.about.com/od/SelfPublishingAndVanityPresses/a/Market-Your-Company.htm" target="_blank">About.com’s Book Publishing section and described the advantages of using a book to market your business like this:

“When a nonfiction business book or biography is used to help market a business, it’s a marketing tool, a big business card, introducing your company’s offerings, starting conversations and providing a path to “get your foot in the door.” With international and electronic distribution from companies such as href="http://publishing.about.com/od/BooksellersAndBookselling/p/Amazon-Com-Online-Retailer-On-The-Forefront-Of-Bookselling-And-Publishing.htm">amazon.com, your book is a plane ticket, taking you and your business to places you haven’t been before – new geographies, new industries, and new customers.”

Some things you’ll want to do to get the buzz going and keep it going:

  • Guest blog on other sites and talk about your free microbook and how people can subscribe.
  • Include multiple ways for people to subscribe.
  • Be sure to include a link to your website and a description of what you have to offer the reader in every excerpt. If you are doing very short posts, you may need to use a URL shortening service to achieve this, such as goo.gl or bitly.com.
  • Ask for retweets and shares. A simple “please RT” can signal to readers to share the excerpt in their own Twitter feed.

Other Ways to Utilize MicroBooks

If you’re still a little uncertain about using this platform, consider dipping your toes in slowly with these ideas.

Teaming Up

id="attachment_8496" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption alignright">href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/web-business-ideas/using-micro-books-to-build-brand-recognition/attachment/reading-on-cell-phone/" rel="attachment wp-att-8496">class="size-full wp-image-8496" alt="reading on cell phone" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/reading-on-cell-phone.jpg" width="300" height="300" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/reading-on-cell-phone.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/reading-on-cell-phone-150x150.jpg 150w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/reading-on-cell-phone-130x130.jpg 130w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />class="wp-caption-text">Photo Credit: href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/12836528@N00/6822185648/">kevin dooley via href="http://compfight.com">Compfighthref="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/">/>

One way to expand your reach in almost any type of promotion you do is to work cooperatively with other business owners. Of course, you’ll want to be sure they aren’t competition and that their business compliments yours. For example, if you are a cake decorator, you can target the wedding market and team up with a florist, dress shop, photographer and caterer. Each service/product is complimentary but not competing.

First, gather the group of business owners together for a meeting either in person, phone or online. Decide how often installments will be sent out, what the basic storyline is (for a group, it is best to stick with fiction as everyone will have different areas of expertise for nonfiction). Choose a hashtag for the entire group. Example: #weddings

Each business should take a turn, in order, posting the next segment. When that segment is posted, they can include a link to their website, business name, etc. at the end. Each business should also promote the micronovel on their own websites and to their lists of customers.

Short Story or Tips

If you don’t want to team up with other businesses, you could also create a short story, which is much less time consuming than a novel. A 1,000-2,000 word story will still give you ten to twenty short posts to work with and should help you reach new customers as the story is shared and new people sign up to receive the excerpts.

If you prefer to stay away from fiction, you can create a series of tips to send out. For example, if you sell shoes, you might want to create a tip a week to send out that offers a shoe tip, such as how to store shoes, how to stretch tight shoes, how to make shoes skid-proof, etc.

Employee Soap Opera

People love a good soap opera. Look at the popularity of prime time soaps like Dallas, Downton Abbey and even Breaking Bad. These shows, while different than a daytime soap, still meet the overall plot line that one could argue qualifies them as soaps.

Get your employees involved in the microbook. Ask them to brainstorm a soap opera set around the workplace and each employee contributes a short bit about a character he or she creates. If your company is big enough, you could send out a new installment every day. A smaller company, with less than 10 employees may want to send out one installment a week instead.

New Ways to Promote

The key to keeping your business trendy and reaching new customers is to seek out new ways to promote. Microbooks are still fairly young in America and have not yet taken off. Now is a good time to get your feet wet and reach an untapped market of young technologically savvy customers who just might love your mini-installments so much that they become loyal customers and share info on your business with other people they know.

How to Switch From One Web Host to Another (Step-by-step Guide)

alt="How to Switch From One Web Host to Another (Step-by-step Guide)" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/moving-500x266_c.jpg" />

Note: Post updated September 6th, 2016.

In an ideal world, we would never have to worry about switching web hosts – our site would remain happily housed at the current hosting provider’s facility with great load times, low costs, and 100 percent uptime.

Unfortunately, title="When to switch web host" href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/how-to-know-when-its-time-to-change-your-web-host/">the world is not ideal and this perfect scenario rarely – if ever – exists.

How Web Host Switching Works?

Moving your website to a new host is a bit like moving to a new home in the physical world.

Switching web host vs. moving to a new house

Think about it – when you move, you first find a new location, then sign the paperwork, pack up all of your belongings, and physically move them to the new location. If you are moving a business, after doing all of this, you finish the move off by hanging a new sign over your door to advertise your new digs.

Moving your site is something similar – only a virtual version. You shop for a new location, sign the paperwork to rent hosting space (in the account type of your choice – shared server, dedicated server, VPS, etc.), package up your site to ensure that all of your assets come with you, transfer everything to your new web host, and then point your domain to your new host by changing the DNS record; this final step is in essence hanging the sign over your new shop door.

Though it can be a process, it is completely attainable.

A Step-by-Step Walk Through: How to transfer your host from one company to another

Switching your host requires completing a series of actions in a specific order to ensure that everything transfers over properly. To move your website to a new host, complete the following steps.

1. Purchase a new web host

There are a variety of hosting providers out there, each with its own configuration. You will need to evaluate which is right for you based on a number of factors, such as cost, required space, and server configuration, to name a few. When purchasing, consider registering your domain to a third party provider so that in case you do ever need to switch hosts again, your domain can come with you more easily and without any potential complications.

class="icon-file-text-alt" style="color:inherit !important;">
Dig deeper: href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/choose-the-right-web-hosting/">How to choose and select the right web host

2. Back up your sites to the new web host

Static files comprise any type of file that does not frequently change, automatically or via a content editor – such as in-place graphics or copy. To back up a static website, simply copy the old file structures over to the new web host.

For a dynamic site that runs on database (ie. MySQL), install the web apps to the new web host as they are currently held in the existing site; then move the database file to the new web host. In case your web application provides easy transfer functionality (as is the case in WordPress’ import/ export function), transfer all of your data files directly to the new web host. If your application does not offer any such functionality, you will need to tweak your MySQL and PHP configuration files accordingly.

Another easy way to move CMS sites (WordPress, for example) is to zip and move everything in your “public_html” or “www” folder to the new web host and add the following two lines into your WP-config:

define('WP_SITEURL', 'http://' . $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST']); define('WP_HOME', WP_SITEURL);

3. Final Check Before Making the Move

Double check that everything is working properly on your website once you have loaded your files onto the new hosting configuration.

Of note, you can preview your newly hosted website using a temporary URL in IP numbers. Some hosting companies will even provide a development staging platform so that you can easily and fluidly preview your site before taking it live in the new environment, allowing you to remedy any problems behind the scenes.

4. Switch Website DNS Records

style="text-align: center;">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8391 border" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/godaddy-dns-record.jpg" alt="godaddy dns record" width="750" height="415" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/godaddy-dns-record.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/godaddy-dns-record-300x166.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

Switch your website’s DNS record to the new web host’s servers at your registrar.

Your DNS record is more or less a list of instructions that specifies where to send the user; moving your DNS record to the new servers ensures that visitors will find your site as intended, rather than receiving an error or misdirect. This is a critical step – make sure you get the right DNS info from your new web host.

class="icon-file-text-alt" style="color:inherit !important;">

5. Wait for the DNS change to propagate through the net

Once you have requested to move your DNS record, the switch can take anywhere between a few hours to a full day to take live. Once the switch go live, alert your former hosting company as to the cancellation.

Important Things to Watch For

Unfortunately, anytime that you change a configuration that affects your website, there are a series of problems that may occur. Keep your eyes out for the following as you prepare for and execute the switch, as well as for a period of time after switching hosts.

1. Downtime

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6980" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/site-down.jpg" alt="web hosting down" width="750" height="280" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/site-down.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/site-down-300x112.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

In the WWW, any time that your site is not live is time that you are losing potential readers and potential business – after all, time is money. The goal in general – never mind when you are switching web hosts – is to have zero downtime. To ensure that you do not experience downtime while making the switch, take the time upfront to ensure that everything is in place and working correctly at your new host before fully converting the files and making your site active in its new home. style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: medium;" />style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: medium;" /> Secondly, inform your loyal visitors and/or clients that you are switching hosts beforehand along with information about the hours that you are making the switch. Hopefully this will reduce the number of site visitors during the switch time period, eliminating strain on the system and also prevent any customer service headaches in case downtime does occur.style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: medium;" />style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: medium;" /> Finally, work closely with your new host throughout the transfer process. If you have any doubts or any questions, do not hesitate to ask your new host for assistance; not only does this speak to the importance of quality customer service, but some web hosts will help to transfer the FOC.

Once the switch is done, it’s recommended to href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/web-hosting-guides/the-ultimate-guide-in-tracking-website-uptime/">monitor your site uptime closely for a period of time to ensure everything at the new host is working alright.

2. Change of site structures and missing links

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6986" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/hacked.jpg" alt="hacked site" width="750" height="280" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/hacked.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/hacked-300x112.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

As you transfer your site’s assets from the previous hosting environment, it is possible for assets, such as graphics to be misplaced or for certain files to be left behind. If this happens, your visitors are likely to experience 404 errors. Keep an eye on the 404 log during and after the switch – this log will alert you of any non-working links or assets that you need to remedy to restore your site to being fully functional.

class="meteor-icon" style="font-size:130% !important;">
class="icon-lightbulb" style="color:inherit !important;">
Tip:  Repairing site navigation with .htaccess

You can make use of href="https://www.interserver.net/tips/kb/htaccess-url-redirect/">.htaccess redirectMatch and redirect to point old file locations to new ones. The following are some sample codes you can make use of.

Define your 404 page

To minimize the damage cause by broken links – where moved.html is the page you wish to show your visitors when there’s a 404 error.

ErrorDocument 404 /moved.html

Transferring a page to a new location

Redirect 301 /previous-page.html http://www.example.com/new-page.html

Transferring entire directory to a new location

redirectMatch 301 ^/category/?$ http://www.example.net/new-category/

Redirecting dynamic pages to a new location

And, just in case you change your site structure at the new host –

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^id=13$
RewriteRule ^/page.php$ http://www.mywebsite.com/newname.htm? [L,R=301]

3. Emails

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8390" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/emails.jpg" alt="emails" width="750" height="280" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/emails.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/emails-300x112.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

Perhaps one of the most difficult parts of switching your web host is transferring your email. There are three common hosting scenarios that apply to email:

  • Scenario #1: Email is currently hosted on a domain registrar (such as GoDaddy)
    This is the easiest scenario from which to move; all you need to do is to switch the A (or @) record and point it to the new host’s IP address.
  • Scenario #2: Email accounts are hosted with a third party (such as Microsoft 365)
    Ensure that your MX records, along with any other records that your email service provider needs, are updated in your DNS.
  • Scenario #3: Email accounts are hosted with the respective web host
    When you make the switch to the new host, simply recreate the existing email account on the new web host and configure the new email agent.

class="meteor-icon" style="font-size:130% !important;">
class="icon-file-text-alt" style="color:inherit !important;">
Dig deeper: href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/featured-articles/email-hosting-guide/">What to do when your web host does not provide email hosting service

4. Database

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6983" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/more-space.jpg" alt="more hosting space needed" width="750" height="280" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/more-space.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/more-space-300x112.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

There’s risk where your database could be corrupted during the switch. For the ease of discussion we will focus on just WordPress in this point.

What to do when your WP database is corrupted?

In case that you can still access your WP dashboard, try to first disable all plugins and see if your database pulls up correctly. Then, re-enable them one at a time, checking the home page each time to make sure it is showing correctly.

Things would get a little trickier if you cannot access your dashboard. Try these different simple steps to see if one works:

  • Reupload your database, writing over the new database.
  • Check where the corruption error is coming from and try to reupload that file from your old site to your new one.
  • Open the file and check to make sure it is pointing to your new server.

WordPress auto database repair

If those steps do not work, you may have to do a bit of coding, but I’m going to talk you through it. First, open the new site in FTP and go to your wp-config.php file. The file should be in the main folder where you blog resides.

The first thing you should always do whenever editing your PHP files is to make a copy of what is there. You can copy and paste into Notepad and save on your desktop. This could save you if your files get really corrupted.

Look for this wording:

/** Absolute path to the WordPress directory. */

Just above that line, add this wording:

define('WP_ALLOW_REPAIR',true);

Save your changes and leave your FTP program open for now. Open up your favorite web browser. Go to the following address for the rep

http://yourwebsitename.com/wp-admin/maint/repair.php
id="attachment_10334" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption aligncenter">class="wp-image-10334" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/repair.png" alt="repair screen" width="750" height="278" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/repair.png 700w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/repair-300x111.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />class="wp-caption-text">Either button will work to repair your database but just pick “Repair and Optimize”.

id="attachment_10335" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption aligncenter">class="wp-image-10335" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/repaired.png" alt="repaired database" width="750" height="433" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/repaired.png 700w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/repaired-300x173.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />class="wp-caption-text">When the process is completed, you will see a screen that looks the one below. It will even remind you to remove that repair line from your configuration file.

If the above methods don’t work, your next step is to head over to your database. This can be daunting if you aren’t sure exactly how databases work, but the steps are fairly simple. Even if you completely destroy the database, you should be able to just re-download from the old server and upload again. There really is no need to be afraid as long as you have your database backed up.

Alternative: Free Site Migration by Your New Host

If all these sound too much to you – you might want to go with the alternative and leave the migration work to your new web host.

Yep, don’t be too surprised – hosting companies are doing all they can to win new customers.

Many hosting companies, including some good ones that I recommend – href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-review/interserver/">InterServer, href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-review/inmotion-hosting/">InMotion Hosting, href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-review/wp-engine/">WP Engine, href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-review/a-small-orange/">A Small Orange, etc etc, will help transfer new customers’ sites to their server for free.

Take InMotion Hosting for example –

id="attachment_17020" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption aligncenter">class="border wp-image-17020 size-full" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/inmotion-site-transfer.jpg" alt="Login to AMP dashboard > Account Operations > Website Transfer Request" width="750" height="270" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/inmotion-site-transfer.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/inmotion-site-transfer-300x108.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />class="wp-caption-text">To initiate a site transfer at InMotion Hosting, login to AMP dashboard > Account Operations > Website Transfer Request.

I spoke to InMotion Hosting senior manager, Savag Salibian, recently to learn about InMotion Hosting’s site transfer process. And, I get the conclusion that it’s a no-brainer for the non-techie (or the lazy ones) to let their support staffs to handle the site migration work. All you need to do is to provide some login data at your old host – hostname, cPanel login, and FTP login via the Site Migration Request Form at your AMP dashboard (see image above) and InMotion will take care of the rest.

“For folks who are unfamiliar with how web hosting works, it’s actually better to use our [InMotion Hosting] free transfer program because 1- it’s free and quick, 2- zero down time, 3- our transfer specialists are available 24/7/365 via phone and live chat, and 4- we help transfer emails for free (for cPanel to cPanel)…” –  Savag Salibian, InMotion Hosting.

Bottom Line: Get Rid of Your Lousy Host, Today!

Making the switch to a new web host can be a stressful time, but it’s the best thing to do when you are stuck with a bad web host. If you’re already running a website, you shouldn’t have any trouble with the switch – after all, it’s just the usual backup/download/upload stuffs that you are already doing daily.

If you have any additional tips for making the switch that I have not already mentioned above – or if you have any questions – please let me know!

9 Strategies to Get Your First 1000 Page Views

alt="9 Strategies to Get Your First 1000 Page Views" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/format-500x166_c.jpg" />

title="Starting a blog" href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/how-to-start-a-blog/">Starting a blog over 10 years ago had its advantages: there wasn’t much competition, and if you could find the right niche, you could land a sweet spot that would last. The way to build readership was easy – simply comment on other blogs. Since there weren’t as many, it was an easy way to gather followers.

Nowadays, the sailing isn’t as smooth. There are over 4 million mom blogs in the U.S. alone. Today’s bloggers have to be savvy and competent. The good news is that if you make your first 1,000 monthly page views, you’re way ahead of the pack. Here are list of resources that will help you take your blog from Day 1 to 1000 page views.

1. Share, share, share!

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8571" alt="social media share" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/social-media-share.jpg" width="750" height="250" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/social-media-share.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/social-media-share-300x100.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

“Shared and done” is no longer the name of the game.

You must continually share your posts, over and over. If you are invited to join a group Pinterest board that matches your niche, sign up and share and comment frequently. If you join a list of like-minded bloggers, odds are they will share each other’s content on a regular basis – weekly or daily. This will really help grow your readership and engagement. That said, pay attention to your social media stats. Don’t waste time where your efforts are not paying off. Instead, invest them where you see engagement.

For an excellent checklist on how to share daily, download  “href="http://www.thesitsgirls.com/blogging/how-to-grow-your-blog-business/">Growing Your Blog as a Business” on the SITS Girls website.

2. Research!

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8574" alt="research" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/research.jpg" width="750" height="250" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/research.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/research-300x100.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

You need to know the latest trends and tips for social media engagement, SEO, domain authority and page ranking. For example, it’s been getting more difficult to get proper engagement on Facebook fan pages but this social media outlet is not dead – yet. And if you want to participate in campaigns, you need to be active in this area. “href="http://www.spajonas.com/2014/01/16/increasing-facebook-page-engagements-the-one-two-punch/">Increasing Facebook Page Engagements – The One-Two Punch” by writer and web developer S.J. Pajonas, explains how you can make Facebook work for you while safeguarding your page against future algorithm changes. In addition, every social media outlet has tools to track engagement, and you should be using Google Analytics to gage how your blog is reaching growing. It’s not only important to understand these, but check out the latest trends.

For example, while Google’s Page Rank is not dead, Domain Authority, by MOZ.com, is becoming a fast-growing replacement. href="http://moz.com/learn/seo/domain-authority">Learn more about Domain Authority at Moz.com.

3. Set up content in a way that’s easy to read.

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8575" alt="format" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/format.jpg" width="750" height="250" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/format.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/format-300x100.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

I get really frustrated when I find a blog with a title I’m completely excited about only to find 1000 words, with few paragraphs, no headings or bullets and tiny fonts. This will drives readers away. In addition, don’t burden people with turns of click-throughs, link directly to your article. While popular for magazine articles, but can waste a reader’s time. Know your readers’ time constraints and what drives them stay on your site.

Set up your content in a way that addresses that: chunks of digestible info separated by images, bullets and headings.

4. Don’t forget about design.

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8573" alt="format and web design" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/forma.jpg" width="750" height="250" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/forma.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/forma-300x100.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

This goes hand in hand with the last bullet. Design is not the most important element but it’s important to tailor it so that the audience can read your content easily, find great stuff or income links quickly and share your content easily. You also want your site to be mobile-friendly so I recommend looking for responsive themes. Keep your site clean, legible and accessible. That means making sure your load times are fast too. href="http://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/">Google’s Page Speed tool can help you fix errors. href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/choose-the-right-web-hosting/">If your host is slowing you down, it’s time for a change.

In addition, new visitors should instantly understand what your site’s theme and quickly find the most interesting content and how to subscribe. Make sure that you have both email and RSS feeds, as well as services like BlogLovin’. Put links to all your social media in a prominent position to make it a no brainer for readers to follow you.

5. Offer your readers something of value.

I’m starting up a new program to share with my readers regular coupons and other resources that speak to their lifestyle: discounts on gluten-free, organic and nontoxic foods and products. Since I already hunt for these deals for myself, this is a no-brainer for my community. I’m also working on an ebook to coordinate all my resources and get them together to share with my readers, just as a bonus for reading my site. And I do regular giveaways in my niche.

Go above and beyond to help your niche save money and time, or provide them data in a usable format.

6. Don’t just join a community; truly connect.

This may mean that you’ll need to be invited to private Facebook or other groups or invitation-only events. The key is not just to consistently seek out your tribe but to also reward other members in it and connect with them. Help out at Twitter parties. Share articles in your newsletters. Round up and reward blogs that you love by featuring one every week or month. Ask how you can help someone out with a guest post or by offering guest post spots. Sell their products, use their affiliates links, promote their links on your social media while tagging them. As opportunities to recruit bloggers come up, these bloggers will remember your help and invite you to participate.

style="line-height: 1.5em;">7. Don’t worry so much about comments.

I write a blog about parenting kids with special needs. While my numbers are good and I have a steady, sizable audience, I have very few comments, except from my comment groups. That’s because the parents who read my site just don’t have the time to engage. They need the bite-sized helpful content, and then they’re moving on. In fact, on my blog, those who want to reach out are more likely to email me personally and keep their information confident. In addition, less people are actually commenting on sites in general because they are more likely to share on social media. Are blog comments completely dead? I don’t think, but they are appearing less frequently (other than spam). You need to keep comments active, though, if you are applying for blog campaigns, because you’re more likely to get chosen if you have active comments. That is why joining a group that focuses on supporting each other’s comments is critical.

8. Don’t forget search engine optimization.

I recently heard that SEO might be dead – don’t believe it!

It has changed, though, and writing quality content with your keywords and integrating them your social media marketing is a must. In “href="http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/230937">5 SEO Trends Every Entrepreneur Needs to Know for 2014,” Entrepreneur.com contributor Jayson DeMers answers the question, “Is SEO dead?” with some very concrete tips on making your site search engine successful in this day and age.

9. A little controversy goes a long way.

A blogger on one of my networks this morning more than tripled her regular page views in one night by writing about a very hot topic that’s in the press nowadays. Now, it’s ok if controversy is not your thing. Personally, I don’t care for this for my own blog, it’s just not my style. However, if you write something that embraces one side of a controversial issue that is in the news you will draw comments – and possibly flamers! It’s one of the quicker ways to go viral, so consider it.

Bottom line

style="text-align: center;">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6572 border" alt="You can do it!" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/doers.jpg" width="750" height="300" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/doers.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/doers-300x120.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

If you are new blogger, you have your work cut out for you! Social media engagement, live events attendance, comment/share groups membership, search engine optimization: there’s just no excuse to leave anything out anymore. Blogging is no longer a quick hobby, it’s an ongoing endeavor. If this sounds overwhelming to you, get in the game by blogging once a week or a few times a month. Work really hard on those posts, and then do the next thing: Tweet, pin, Facebook, instagram, G+. In 2014, you can’t afford to be stagnant.

5 Steps to Writing a Blog Post that Goes Viral

alt="5 Steps to Writing a Blog Post that Goes Viral" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/writing-copy-500x286_c.jpg" />

It’s the dream of every blogger to write a post that gets picked up by social media and goes around the Internet like a fast-moving fire. We see these viral topics all the time. It might be a video of a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79oC63H7HbI" target="_blank">baby laughing or an article about a href="http://blog.flickr.net/en/2014/03/21/mothers-storybook-photos-become-viral-sensation/" target="_blank">mom creating storybook photos. Trying to break the code and understand what will go viral and what won’t can seem like an insurmountable task. Fortunately, by studying what others have done and sticking to some tried and true techniques, you’ll have a good chance of tapping into what readers want to read and want to share with others.

Why Do Some Posts Go Viral?

class="alignright size-full wp-image-9084" alt="baby laughing" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/baby-laughs.png" width="300" height="224" />
There was an interesting article in the href="http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/elements/2014/01/the-six-things-that-make-stories-go-viral-will-amaze-and-maybe-infuriate-you.html" target="_blank">New Yorker in January. The author, Maria Konnikova, discusses the time she spent while she was a student at Stanford studying what topics were most read in the Wall Street Journal. While she couldn’t find a pattern as far as the topics, she did find some interesting connections in how the articles were presented to the reader and which ones seemed to go viral. Emotion was the number one thing she found that made a post resonate with readers (tugged at heartstrings, made her angry, etc.)

Even more interesting, though, was that if the article evoked EXTREME emotion, then the reader was more likely to share it. Anger over a scandal, for example, had as strong of an effect as something that made the reader laugh hysterically. She ties this into Aristotle’s theory about a person’s ethos, pathos and logos and how emotion makes us act.

In the article, she uses the example of the site Upworthy, which focuses on videos. The entire concept of the site has a positive underlying message and the headlines are all designed to evoke some type of emotion in the reader and because readers have shared those videos, the site now has over 87 million regular site visitors.

For example, some recent headlines include:

  • Which Companies Buy Elections? A Scary State-By-State Map.
  • A Pregnant Woman Learns Her Baby Has Down Syndrome. People Who Have It Answer Her One Big Question.
  • Artificial-Intelligence Researcher Tricked Into Falling In Love With A Robot. Twice.

What do you think? Do those headlines make you want to find out more?

href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/web-copy-writing/5-steps-to-writing-a-blog-post-that-goes-viral/attachment/share-social-media/" rel="attachment wp-att-9086">class="size-medium wp-image-9086 alignright" alt="share social media" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/share-social-media-284x300.jpg" width="284" height="300" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/share-social-media-284x300.jpg 284w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/share-social-media.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px" />

5 Quick Steps to Go Viral

5 – Make It Easy to Share

The first and easiest thing you can do to help your post go viral is to make it easy for your readers to share that post.

  • Install a Plugin such as href="https://wordpress.org/plugins/1-click-retweetsharelike/" target="_blank">1-click Retweet/Share/Like andhref="http://wordpress.org/plugins/shareaholic/" target="_blank"> Shareaholic.
  • Share the link on your own social media pages so that people can quickly share or retweet without having to go through too many steps. Ask them to share and retweet in the post.

4 – Know Your Topic

If you aren’t already writing in a niche, you should be. Knowing your topic and knowing it well is what makes for content that can’t be replicated elsewhere and that readers will feel is worthy of sharing. If you don’t have this knowledge, consider hiring someone who does to write for your blog.

Over at href="http://writetodone.com/3-secrets-to-writing-blog-posts-that-go-viral/" target="_blank">WritetoDone blog, Matt Hutchinson talks about the importance of writing to your niche. However, he takes his advice a step farther and also says that it is vital to stay up to date on industry trends and news in your niche. You can’t write trending topics if you don’t know what those trending topics are. He also recommends knowing the community you’re writing for. He says:

“Find out where your ideal readers hang out online. Visit the most popular blogs in your niche. Read everything that’s discussed in the comments, especially for the most popular topics.”

This is excellent advice, because these are the topics your readers want to know more about. Also, these are the people who are already engaged in online blogging. They are more likely to share your posts with others who might want to know the same information.

id="attachment_9088" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption alignright">href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/web-copy-writing/5-steps-to-writing-a-blog-post-that-goes-viral/attachment/catchy-headlines/" rel="attachment wp-att-9088">class="size-full wp-image-9088" alt="catchy headline" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/catchy-headlines.jpg" width="300" height="449" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/catchy-headlines.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/catchy-headlines-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />class="wp-caption-text">Photo Credit: href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/11121568@N06/2119206528/">Alan Cleaver via href="http://compfight.com">Compfight href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/">/>

3 – Headlines Matter

As shown in the examples above for the Upworthy site, headlines have a huge impact on a reader. It is the first impression she has of your article. It sums up for her whether or not it is worth her time to read what you’ve written. You have about five seconds to grab the reader’s interest and you’re competing with millions of other blogs, so you’d better make that headline count.

Jerry Low wrote an article titled “href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/inbound-marketing/headlines-writing-guides/">Write Headlines Like Brian Clark, Neil Patel, and Jon Morrow: 35 Headline Samples From The A-List Bloggers“, where you can get a nice list of different headlines that work.

Remember from the analysis in the New Yorker, that you want to try to tug at the reader’s emotions.

Bad Example: Peanut Butter Recall

Better Example: Mother Grieves as Peanut Butter Recall Too Late for Two-Year-Old Child

You’ll also want to work on adding in some of the other elements of good headlines, such as offering a call to action, indicating the article is a how-to or giving a number of items you’ll offer to help the reader, such as in the title of this article.

2 – Self-Promote

Don’t be afraid to toot your own horn and let people know about your article. In addition to adding a link on Facebook and Twitter, you should be doing at least some of the following:

  • Gather subscriber names and emails and send out a monthly newsletter with a recap of blog posts you’ve written.
  • Plug the article on sites like Digg, Reddit and StumbleUpon.
  • Email friends and family privately and asking them to share your articles.
  • Don’t forget about Google Plus, which is growing in popularity.
  • Get involved on other blogs by leaving comments. However, don’t just plug your articles as this can be seen as rude or spammy by others. Simply add knowledge you have in the discussion and if there is a place to add a link, add it. If not, just use your name. Someone may Google you and find your blog.
  • Go on blogging tours so you reach readers on other blogs.
  • Allow others to post on your blog as this will bring in their regular readers and new traffic.
  • Offer to be interviewed at sites that attract your target demographic. If you blog about butterflies, offer to be interviewed on some gardening blogs or an entomology blog.

1 – Content Is King

I’ve studied extensively what makes a site successful, what causes it to rank well in Google and even have spent time ranking sites for Google. One thing that all high ranking, high traffic sites have in common is that they produce not just good content but excellent content. In the article “href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/how-to-magnetize-your-blog-and-build-your-readership/">How to Magnetize Your Blog and Build Readership“, I talk about what makes for high quality content, including unique items you won’t find anywhere else and going a step beyond what anyone else is offering, especially your competition.

In “href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/web-copy-writing/5-quick-copywriting-rules-for-blogs/">5 Quick Copywriting Rules for Blogs“, we share with you some basic techniques that will help you write consistently good blog posts that your readers will love and will love to share.

 Try Different Things

Although these tips will improve your chances that your blog post will go viral, there is no guarantee that it will. Sometimes it truly does seem to be luck. The right topic at the right time that resonates with readers who share it. It’s almost like hitting the lottery when your blog post goes viral.

While still staying within your niche, be willing to try different things. Interview experts, add videos, write memes and share them, talk about topics no one else is talking about. You never know what it going to take off and make your site famous or at least bring in a little extra traffic.

Top 10 Most Visited Websites and How You Can Benefit from Them

alt="Top 10 Most Visited Websites and How You Can Benefit from Them" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/go-gulf-infographic-500x466_c.gif" />

If you could utilize the ten websites with the most traffic on the Internet, how would that benefit your business? In a report compiled by href="http://www.go-gulf.com/blog/online-time/" target="_blank">Go Gulf Web Technologies from sources such as Nielson, Pew Internet and ComScoreDataMine.com, the most visited web properties were identified. According to info contained in the report:

“US Internet user on average spends 32 hours on internet per month. This is double than the time spent by Global Internet user i.e. 16 hours per month.”

If you could harness just a little bit of that time and filter those people to your website, what kind of impact would it have on your business?

Promotional Benefits of Social Media

id="attachment_8529" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption aligncenter">class="size-full wp-image-8529" alt="top 10 web properties" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/top-10-web-properties.jpg" width="750" height="898" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/top-10-web-properties.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/top-10-web-properties-250x300.jpg 250w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />class="wp-caption-text">Full infographic href="http://www.go-gulf.com/blog/online-time/">here.

Kelly Swee takes a look at social media sites in her article on Forbes titled href="http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/top-social-media-sites-how-you-can-benefit-from-them/" target="_blank">Top Social Media Sites & How You Can Benefit from Them. Swee says, “People are interdependent and vital networking with others is definitely an asset.”

Building an online following for your business blog will create two important elements that can help your bottom line.

  1. Staying in touch with current customers and getting a feel for what they want and need from your business.
  2. Posting exciting snippets and content that your current customers will share with potential new customers.

Making sure you have a social media presence does double duty to help you maintain current customers with up-to-date service while also helping you reach new customers and grow your business. The key, however, is knowing which websites to become involved in and where spend your precious resources and time.

Using the Top 10 for Promotion

Google

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8530" alt="google plus" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/google-plus1.jpg" width="750" height="345" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/google-plus1.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/google-plus1-300x138.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

Google+, like most things google, is quickly taking over some of the social media traffic on the Internet. It really shouldn’t be a surprise that Plus pulls in the most traffic of any of the other sites in this list.

How Your Business Can Benefit

Think of Google+ like a more interactive, better organized Twitter.

  • Post quick updates to your Google+ profile about articles posted on your blog.
  • Let those in your + circle know when your business wins an award or to recognize one of your employees.
  • Post about contests on your + profile page.

Facebook

style="text-align: center;">class="aligncenter wp-image-4740" alt="Facebook Timeline Tools" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/2.jpg" width="750" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/2.jpg 700w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/2-300x134.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" />

It’s little surprise that Facebook makes this list. According to href="http://blog.kissmetrics.com/facebook-statistics/" target="_blank">KissMetrics, Facebook is still the largest ad most active social media network (although Twitter is quickly catching up). They log about 500 million active users on a daily basis.

How Your Business Can Benefit

  • Create a free page for your business to get your presence on Facebook.
  • Post memes or tips and encourage followers to share your posts. This can bring in valuable traffic to your business page.
  • Use Facebook’s paid advertising to target specific groups. Remember to use a specific landing page to help track the effectiveness of the ad and href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/inbound-marketing/boost-conversion-rates/" target="_blank">conversion rates.
  • Host a contest or provide a coupon on Facebook.

Yahoo!

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8531" alt="YAhoo" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/yahoo1.jpg" width="750" height="300" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/yahoo1.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/yahoo1-300x120.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

When you think of Yahoo!, you may first think about e-mail accounts or their search engine. However, there are several ways you can utilize this high traffic site to try to get some mileage for your business.

How Your Business Can Benefit

  • href="http://www.allwebpromotion.com/yahoo-store-benefits.html" target="_blank">All Web Promotion offers some thoughts on using a Yahoo! Storefront for your online presence. The carts is easy, installed for you and gives you the benefit of getting listed on Yahoo! quickly.
  • Connect with some of the writers of the Yahoo! articles you see posted on their various channels. If an article ties into your business expertise, drop the author a note. Let him or her know you enjoyed the piece and that if they need an expert to interview for a future article that you are available.
  • Get involved on href="http://answers.yahoo.com/" target="_blank">Yahoo! Answers. This is a site where people post questions on just about any topic you can imagine and users answer those questions. Be sincere and not self-promoting in your answers and you may gain a few new customers from the experience. At a minimum, you’ll see what people are talking about in your area of expertise and know how to better serve them through your products or services.

MSN/Bing

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8532" alt="bing" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/bing.jpg" width="750" height="422" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/bing.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/bing-300x168.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

MSN was once a very popular site that fell out of favor, but seems to be making a resurgence now that Bing is in charge. You’ve probably seen the Bing ads on TV and even tried the browser. So have millions of other people and you can take advantage of this fact.

How Your Business Can Benefit

  • href="http://www.bing.com/toolbox/submit-site-url" target="_blank">Submit your website to the Bing search engine.
  • Make sure Bing’s web crawler can find all the important pages on your site by submitting a site map. Fortunately, Bing offers specific instructions for the best way to href="http://www.bing.com/webmaster/help/how-to-submit-sitemaps-82a15bd4" target="_blank">submit your site map to them.
  • Use some of your advertising budget to place href="http://advertise.bingads.microsoft.com/en-us/home" target="_blank">targeted ads that will reach your specific demographic.
  • Check out MSN’s blogs. Comment and share your thoughts. Remember not to be spammy with your comments. No one appreciates that and it is considered rude in cyberspace.

YouTube

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8533" alt="YouTube" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/youtube.jpg" width="750" height="516" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/youtube.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/youtube-300x206.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

I previously sang the praises of href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/socialmedia-marketing/how-to-use-youtube-as-a-free-marketing-tool-for-your-website/" target="_blank">YouTube as a free marketing tool for your website and still believe this is a great place to let your creativity shine and help people discover your business. Tech writer href="http://www.fastcompany.com/3007301/most-innovative-companies-2013/one-billion-people-use-youtube-every-month-says-youtube" target="_blank">Addy Dugdale points out:

“One in every two people on the Internet visits YouTube, and every single firm in Ad Age‘s Top 100 Brands uses the site for its advertising campaigns.”

How Your Business Can Benefit

  • Make how-to videos that will be helpful to your customers. For example, some hairdressers have posted videos on how to do specific hairstyles at home, how to make your own hair mask and so on. What can you offer viewers that is valuable but will still make them want to come in and try your product or service?
  • If you aren’t good with a camera or don’t have time, then take out advertising on YouTube and tag it onto someone else’s popular video for a small fee.
  • You can also plug YouTube videos into your blog and write a short commentary to draw reader interest or for a quick post.

Microsoft

According to href="http://mashable.com/2012/07/03/mac-vs-pc-sales/" target="_blank">Mashable, as of 2012, Windows-based computers took up about 78% of the market share. With those kind of numbers, it is little surprise that Microsoft makes the top 10 list. At first glance, you may feel unsure how your business could utilize this site and brand to promote your own product. After all, you can’t really advertise or have a presence on Microsoft. Still it is important to look at this popular site and consider a couple of things.

How Your Business Can Benefit

  • Create free software that can be used by Windows users (not a bad idea to make it available to Apple users as well, though). For example, if you own a golf equipment shop, then create software that allows the user to track and improve his swing.
  • Get involved in the href="http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us" target="_blank">Microsoft community discussions.

AOL

When you think about the Internet, you may think about AOL and the words “you’ve got mail”. Anyone who has been online for more than 10 years, has likely heard that deep, computerized greeting at some point. However, did you know that you can still utilize AOL to promote your business? Even with so many other Internet properties booting AOL out of its once top spot, it is still a popular commodity. You will need an AOL account to utilize these methods.

How Your Business Can Benefit

  • Post in relevant AOL groups. For example, if you’re selling diet products, post in a dieting forum. Again, remember not to just spam the list with something like “buy my great diet product” but to add free information that is helpful without expecting anyone to buy your product. Some may very well become future customers, but your goal is simply to have an online presence at this point.
  • href="http://www.davidandersonwealth.com/traffic/how-to-snag-the-attention-of-aol-customers/" target="_blank">David Anderson suggests: “Another clever way to promote your business is by uploading free articles to the appropriate groups. Write articles that contain information specific to the interests of your target market and include a simple, low-key link to your Web site at the end.” This sounds like a smart tactic for getting your knowledge out there and a little free promotion at the same time.
  • Advertise on href="http://advertising.aol.com/" target="_blank">AOL’s City Guide to reach local customers.

Wikipedia

In a previous article, I discussed how you can href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/using-wikipedia-to-increase-brand-recognition-and-legitimize-your-business/" target="_blank">use Wikipedia to increase brand awareness. However, this is a tricky thing, because if you try to self-promote on Wikipedia, you will more than likely get banned. You really have to go around the back door, get involved in the community, add valuable content and wait for someone else to toot your horn for you. Because it is difficult to utilize Wikipedia effectively for outright promotion, I suggest working on this site only when you have extra time or if you have an employee who can devote some time to the process.

How Your Business Can Benefit

  • Getting listed on Wikipedia means you have a potential reach of href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Statistics">116,835,000 visitors. Wow! Of coruse, not all of those millions will visit the page you might be listed on, but some will. It also can help your site ranking.
  • Research blog articles completely. If you can establish yourself as an authority, you are much more likely to be linked to from Wikipedia. I actually have not yet started to work on getting listed on this site and was surprised to find one of my articles linked there. It was due to some specific knowledge I had and nothing I did. So, dig deep and share the things you know that no one else does. Share your unique perspective.
  • Gain a presence on Wikipedia’s sister sites, such as Wikinews and Wikibooks.
  • Spend a little time in the Wikipedia community area and get to know others. If someone knows you have specific knowledge, they are more likely to reference your work.

Apple

As Luke Stangel put it in the href="http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news/2013/06/11/14-eye-popping-apple-statistics-from.html?page=all" target="_blank">Silicon Valley Business Journal:

“Apple tells its story in big numbers: Millions, billions and—in the case of one statistic—trillions.”

Think about the average waiting room or line you are standing in today. What are people doing? That’s right; they are on their iPhones, the kids are playing with the iPads, or they have their iPods out listening to them. Apple products have overtaken nearly every aspect of our lives. According to href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/10/28/apple-q4-2013-iphone-ipad-mac-sales/" target="_blank">Tech Crunch, in the fourth quarter of 2013 (a mere three months), Apple sold 33.8 million iPhones and 14.1 million iPads.

How Your Business Can Benefit

  • Create an iOS-based app easily through a service like href="http://ibuildapp.com/" target="_blank">iBuildApp.com. For example, you can push new coupons to your customers through an app.
  • Create a podcast teaching something related to your business and upload to iTunes. If you own a heating and cooling company, create a podcast that explains how to change your furnace filter, for example or talk about the importance of switching the furnace over to emergency mode in sub-zero weather.

Ask

Ask.com is another website where users can ask questions and seek answers. Although some of their traffic is from students trying to seek answers to tests and homework, there are also questions on just about any other topic you can imagine. Joining the site is free.

How Your Business Can Benefit

  • Answer questions people have and establish yourself as an expert on your topic.
  • See what questions people are asking and create a blog post to answer that question. When it comes up again, their search may just pull up your site.

Is Your Top 10 Different Than These?

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8534" alt="website choices" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/website-choices.jpg" width="750" height="300" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/website-choices.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/website-choices-300x120.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

In previous articles, I’ve talked about some social media specific sites and how you can utilize them to reach customers. In addition to the web properties above, you’ll want to consider having a presence on href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/socialmedia-marketing/how-to-use-twitter-for-small-business/" target="_blank">Twitter, href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/socialmedia-marketing/using-slideshare-to-reach-new-customers/" target="_blank">SlideShare and href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/socialmedia-marketing/get-on-pinterest-to-drum-up-more-interest/" target="_blank">Pinterest.

It is also a good idea to keep an eye on what your competition is up to. If your competitors have a presence on a specific social network or are doing heavy advertising on a website, then you should consider it as well.

Which web properties are the most visited changes almost as quickly as you can find an infographic with the information. While some almost always sit near the top of the list, it is wise to keep your finger on the pulse of the online world and try out new sites as they come and go. Keep your eyes open, be aware of trends and look at creative ways you can get involved as a business.

What I think about Elegant Themes

id="attachment_8584" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption aligncenter">class=" wp-image-8584 border" alt="A quick snapshot on Elegant Themes member's download area." src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/elegant-themes-download-area.jpg" width="750" height="327" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/elegant-themes-download-area.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/elegant-themes-download-area-300x130.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />class="wp-caption-text">A quick snapshot on Elegant Themes member’s download area.

The Good

  • Numerous Choices: The collection of themes is vast and varied. There truly are themes to suit every possible need, from blogs to business sites to ecommerce sites. You will most definitely be able to find something to suit both your needs and your tastes. And of course, the folks as Elegant Themes are always adding new themes so there are more options to choose from everyday.
  • Affordable: Prices are incredibly reasonable. With the per a month plan, you’re essentially paying per a theme.
  • Regular updates: Elegant Themes updates regularly and always provides technical support. It’s crucial to note that technical support is very, very important when it comes to dealing with Elegant Themes. Most people end up using pre-designed themes as the base of their design, altering the code along the way to tailor the design specifically to their needs. Therefore you need a development team constantly looking after theme development, as well as releasing updates whenever necessary. Furthermore, without a good, regular support you will inevitably waste a lot of time debugging and solving problems should something go wrong.
  • Ease of use: All in all, Elegant Themes is pretty easy to use, even if you’re a newbie; it doesn’t take too long to get the hang of things. Furthermore, Elegant Themes also works to ensure that themes are compatible with all major Internet browsers, including Firefox, Explorer, Safari, Chrome, etc. You can switch between browsers without having to worry.

The Not-So-Good

  • The Code:  There are some issues with the code in some of themes; unfortunately, Nick’s code isn’t flawless. This issue is especially problematic in relation to some of newer themes that haven’t been as extensively tested. If you are worried about coding issues it is probably better to stick with some of the older themes. Though they may not be as novel the company has had more time to fix bugs. Furthermore, the older themes have been fully tested, which also mitigates any kind of coding issues.

In regards to code, there are also some reports of loading speed problems with sites that use ET themes. I personally didn’t have any kind of issue so I can’t really attest to this.

  • ePanel: ePanel is the customization dashboard at the backend and to be honest, I personally hate how it works. There aren’t any real performance issues but I feel it could have been a lot more user friendly. All in all, I just feel it’s been poorly designed.

Theme Highlights

When it comes to picking favorites, it is hard to narrow things down to just one theme.
