Using SlideShare to Reach New Customers

alt="Using SlideShare to Reach New Customers" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/0509-1-500x398_c.jpg" />

If you haven’t heard of SlideShare yet, you will soon. The href="//contentmarketinginstitute.com/education/books/the-marketers-guide-to-slideshare/”">Content Marketing Institute, states that SlideShare gets about 120 million views per month. Social networking seems to be all anyone is talking about. From people tweeting while they watch big ticket events like the Super Bowl, to Facebook posts about the election, the culture today is most definitely engaged online and businesses are looking for ways to get in on the trend.

href="//www.slideshare.net/" target="_blank">SlideShare is a bit different than other social media platforms and is a bit less interactive than something like Twitter. The site is Web 2.0 based, and you can upload in Keynote, PDF, OpenOffice or PDF format. The company was bought by LinkedIn, another social media site, and claims about 60 million visitors per month.

An article on the href="//contentmarketinginstitute.com/education/books/the-marketers-guide-to-slideshare/”" target="_blank">Content Marketing Institute’s website titled “The Marketer’s Guide to SlideShare” states:

If you’ve been struggling with how to talk business on Facebook, SlideShare might sound too good to be true. But this is a social platform where business sits at the center of visitors’ intentions—not just as a gimmick to get people to “like” it.

How to Use SlideShare to Reach New Customers

Show What’s Great About Your Product

Create a slideshow that shows off the best features of your product. You can do this through photographs and bullet points that list out the pros of the product as well as the purposes for your product or service and how that can solve the potential customer’s problem.

Up Your Visibility in Search Engines

Google’s new algorithms seem to love info that is easily digestible but of value. SlideShare is a built-in platform for this because it is an informative presentation or slideshow. Keep the info short and to the point and your slideshow will rank even better.

Clear up Any Questions

One reason people hesitate to buy a new product or service or switch to a new company is because they are unsure whether it will be beneficial to them to do so. Think of the questions a customer might have and then write a slide that answers those questions before the customer has a chance to think them. For example, you could create a slide titled “Why should I switch to a new Internet service provider?” Within that slideshow, you would then answer that question for the customer.

Choosing Your SlideShare Content

Since you’ll be using the slideshow as a marketing tool for your business, you’ll want to keep the pages within the presentation fairly short and to the point. Visitors to SlideShare are as busy as anyone else and may only have a few minutes to flip through your presentation and glean some interesting facts. You want to accomplish two things: get your brand in the customer’s mind and answer the customer’s question.

Try to keep the length of your text to a sentence or two per page. Bullet points are best because they are quick and easy to digest.

class=" wp-image-1166 alignright border" alt="iStock Photo Website" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/0509-1.jpg" width="360" height="287" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/0509-1.jpg 600w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/0509-1-300x239.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px" />

Choose images that are not going to distract the reader from the text but that add value. For example, if you own a winery and want to encourage customers to purchase wine to serve with dessert, you might create a slideshow on “How to Choose a Dessert Wine”. You would then add an image of a bottle of dessert wine in the lower right corner and a white background where the text will live.

Try to stay away from anything busy, too bright or distracting. You can either take the photos or purchase them from a stock photo site like href="http://www.istockphoto.com/" target="_blank">iStockPhoto.com.

Choose a font that is easy to read. Have you ever tried to read something in a fancy script font and wondered what the person was thinking that created that document? Keep the font simple and large enough for anyone to read.

However, keep in mind that many people view items through mobile devices these days, so don’t make the font so large that it won’t fit into a smaller screen. A good rule of thumb is 14 or 16 points in common fonts like Calibri, Courier, Arial or Times New Roman.

The size limit for a slideshow on SlideShare is 100 mb, so double check that your file is not larger than that. Once you’ve created your presentation, upload it to your account and view it to make sure everything works correctly and appears the way you’d like.

Additional Tips to Get the Most Exposure from Your Slideshow

You now have a visual presentation that will hopefully answer some big (or maybe little) questions and lead customers toward your business as a potential solution. Now that your slide is uploaded and working, it’s time to work it into your marketing plan. There are several ways you can utilize SlideShare to href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/grow-a-blog-community/">grow your business.

Increase Search Engine Ranking: Make sure you optimize your slideshow for search engines by using tags and a full description that has strong keywords for your topic.

Use the Embed Feature: One of the biggest benefits to SlideShare is that you can embed your presentation right into your website or other social media platforms. You can even automate SlideShare so that when you upload a new presentation, it will notify your LinkedIn contacts.

Let People Download It: Want to gather information from your leads? Allow people to download your presentation if they share their contact info. This is a great way to encourage others to use your content in their meetings and speeches, which is just more free exposure for you. If you provide valuable information, people will share it with others.

Utilize the Social Sharing Options: In addition to LinkedIn, SlideShare also makes it easy to share your presentations on Twitter and Facebook. It only takes a second to do so and if some of those people pass on your slideshow, you’ll gain even more exposure.

How Well Is it Working? Analytics

As with any type of marketing, you’ll have the best success rate when you can track how well a specific campaign is working. The successful presentations are models and should be repeated with subsequent slideshows. In February of 2013, SlideShare introduced a new tracking tool called “Send Tracker”. This tool allows you to see at a glance who viewed your slideshow and how much time that person spent on each slide.

With this type of tracking, you will be able to see if a particular slide is turning customers off or if another slide seems to encourage them to read on.

In addition to using the Pro feature analytical tools available through SlideShare, any links you share within the presentation should go to specific landing pages on your website so you can track traffic from the presentation and see what your click-through rate translates to.

Since SlideShare is another high traffic site, this is one social media outlet that you’ll want to try as part of your overall online marketing plan.

How to Use the Rule of 7 To Gain New Customers

alt="How to Use the Rule of 7 To Gain New Customers" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/rule-of-7-500x166_c.jpg" />

If you’ve ever taken a marketing course or worked with a PR firm, you’ve likely heard about the “Rule of 7”. This is simply a rule of thumb that a consumer must see or hear about your product or service an average of 7 times before he or she will act on it and buy. Although there is currently some debate about whether 7 is still the magic number, especially in an online setting, the overall concept of reaching people through different mediums at different times is still valid and can help you gain new customers you otherwise might not have reached. These statistics are backed up by research. According to href="http://ro7.co/the-rule-of-7-is-an-old-marketing-adage-backed-up-by-research" target="_blank">Ro7.com:

80% of sales are made on the 5th – 12th contact

Why 7?

Executive consultant href="http://www.smartinsights.com/email-marketing/email-creative-and-copywriting/3-5-7-rule-for-email-marketing/" target="_blank">Dori Thompson talks about how many impressions of ads the average person sees in a day in our current, media-overload world. She throws out a number of 3,000.

This includes advertising from all mediums:

[one_half]

  • Television
  • Magazines
  • Radio
  • Online ads
  • Spam

[/one_half]

[one_half_last]

  • Mobile browsing
  • Billboards
  • Junk mail
  • Newspapers
  • E-mail

[/one_half_last]

It’s no wonder that small businesses have to work harder and hard to reach customers and gain a share of the market. Add to this ad overload the fact that most people have short attention spans and a hundred other things competing for that attention and you have to grab their attention, grab it fast and make an impression. You have to accomplish this in more than one way, multiple times and you must use a branding strategy that keeps the name of your company in their mind.

Love or hate them, K-mart’s new advertising campaign is a perfect example of how to make an impact, make it quick and reach new customers. Even though the ads aren’t readily available on television, they are so funny to many that they are reaching customers in multiple ways online.

Kmart’s Brilliance Times 7

Many of my friends actually hate Kmart’s latest ads and you may be one of those people, but let’s study them anyway as a case in point on how to achieve the rule of 7 in an entertaining way that reaches new customers.

Ship My Pants

This commercial was released online and quickly went viral. Although Kmart released it online in one location, the ad made people laugh because of the play on words and they began to post it on Facebook, tweet about it on Twitter, send it via e-mail and write about it in articles around the web. This meant that people were seeing the ad over and over, or were seeing mention of the ad over and over. It was also in trending topics on these sites because of its sudden popularity. It has over 18 million views on YouTube alone. That’s a pretty good reach for a 30-second commercial.

Although it is unclear at this point if the ads will help or hurt Kmart’s bottom line, as some people find the ads offensive, the ability to create a single ad that online users then promote for you cannot be ignored. I suspect they are seeing some success as they have recently released a new ad called “title="Big Gas Savings " href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1yir-p68xM" target="_blank">Big Gas Savings” with a similar play on words.

Can You Reach Them in 5? 3? Or, even 1?

class="alignright size-full wp-image-1754 border" alt="Internet Marketing Ads" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/0611-8.jpg" width="350" height="212" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/0611-8.jpg 350w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/0611-8-300x181.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px" />

Does it really take seven encounters with information about your product before the person will consider buying it? That’s debatable. Some people will see one banner ad, click on it and buy your product. It stands to reason that the higher the cost of the product, the more trust you’ll have to build with the buyer. If the customer has never heard of your company, she isn’t likely to buy a luxury yacht from you because she saw a banner ad on a website. On the other hand, if you offer a magazine that is under and she sees an ad, she may purchase it immediately.

Since what is considered a “high” price point can be different for each person, it is best to try to reach your customers in as many ways as possible. Here are some steps to help you figure out how to accomplish that. Most businesses cannot afford television or radio ads when first starting out, so we will focus on less expensive options.

Remember the Local Market

Even though your product may be a global product that is of interest to people form all over the world, don’t neglect your local marketing efforts. Approach local companies that might have a reason to utilize your product or service. Send a press release to your local newspaper and they may write a story about you (free advertising). Take out a billboard ad or post an ad in your local theater. Put flyers in your neighbors newspaper boxes. Give speeches to local organizations and join some networking groups. Get the word out about your business and what you have to offer.

Exchange Ads

Exchanging ads with business people who have complimentary but not competitive businesses to yours is a free and easy way to get your name in front of new customers for the first time. You may choose to exchange ads with those in your local networking group who have online newsletters, for example. Your best connections will likely come from online friends. Join groups, chat on boards, get to know people and see which newsletters fit your own business philosophy. When you have a list of three or four, approach those business owners and offer to exchange newsletter ads. Be careful here. Only approach a business you are comfortable promoting and recommending to your own customers.

Banner Ads

Paid banner ads are another way to get the word out about your product and get another impression in front of those customers. Seek out sites that cater to the type of customer you want to reach. If the site has a customer demographic of middle class women aged 18-24 and you want to reach 40-somethings, then that isn’t the best site for you to take a banner ad at. However, if you want to reach 22 year olds, then you’re in the right location. Remember that you want to make an impression at least 7 times on each customer. With this in mind, try to talk the website owners into giving you two months for the price of one or a discount if you take out a three-month banner ad. The site’s visitors should see your banner each time they visit.

Guest Blogging

Does that same site have a blog? Offer to title="Write Guest Post" href="http://www.webrevenue.co/write-for-us/" target="_blank">write a guest post. This will reach the consumer yet another time. So, she might read about you in the site’s newsletter (1 impression), see your banner ad three different times (3 more impressions) and then see your guest post (1 more impression). You are more than halfway there to selling your item and having her as a customer. Who knows, maybe she is more a Rule of 5 kind of girl and you’ve already won her as a lifelong customer.

Forums

Do the sites you are advertising on have forums or places to ad comments? Get involved. Be careful here, though. Spammy posts are really frowned upon. If you do not have something legitimate to add to the conversation, it is best to not comment. However, if you do have something intelligent to say, go ahead and post. Just don’t advertise your produce. It’s fine to sign it something like John Doe, CEO of Whatever Company. However, it is not okay to write something like this: “If you like my post, come check out my gizmo gadget at www.gizmogadget.com.” Anything along those lines is a big no-no when it comes to forum netiquette. People on the Internet are looking for informational value. If you remember that, you’ll be fine.

7 Is NOT a Magic Number

It may all sound really simple, but 7 is not a magic number.

You can reach a customer a million times and if you don’t have a solid marketing message, she will only get tired of seeing your company name. Before you ever try to reach a customer 7 times, you should have a solid plan in mind for a message you want to give to the consumer. Remember:

  • You want her to understand why she needs this product.
  • You want her to see that your product is better than any other out there.
  • You want to show why you offer value for her money.
  • You want to show what is unique about your company out of any competitors out there.

If you can do these things and reach the consumer multiple times, you’ll be reaching more new customers than you ever expected.

Web Hosting News Updates: Facebook’s New Safety Check Feature, Microsoft Azure to Combat Ebola, and Customers Demanding Refunds from AT&T for Cramming

alt="Web Hosting News Updates: Facebook’s New Safety Check Feature, Microsoft Azure to Combat Ebola, and Customers Demanding Refunds from AT&T for Cramming" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/safetycheckmobielcarousel-500x675_t.jpg" />

The last few weeks have been interesting as far as news cycles go. With the first US Ebola diagnosis, growing concerns over this disease have dominated news channels and websites everywhere. However, buried under the concerns that the disease might spread farther than ever before, have been a few noteworthy items that those active on the Internet should take note of.

href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/hosting-updates-news/web-hosting-news-updates-facebooks-new-safety-check-feature-microsoft-azure-to-combat-ebola-and-customers-demanding-refunds-from-att-for-cramming/attachment/safetycheckmobielcarousel/" rel="attachment wp-att-11283">class="alignright size-full wp-image-11283" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/safetycheckmobielcarousel.jpg" alt="safetycheckmobielcarousel" width="300" height="405" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/safetycheckmobielcarousel.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/safetycheckmobielcarousel-222x300.jpg 222w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />Facebook’s New Safety Check Feature

On March 12, 2014, an EF4 tornado devastated my small town in southern Indiana. As the vicious monster took out roofs, houses, trees and the local school, it also took down phone lines and all means of communication with the outside world.

Frantic relatives and friends were worried sick about us and it wasn’t until hours and hours later that we were able to get enough signal to get out a quick text or two and let a handful know we were okay.

Facebook has come up with a solution to this problem and it’s quite brilliant. It is called href="http://newsroom.fb.com/news/2014/10/introducing-safety-check/" target="_blank">Safety Check.

This app uses Facebook to both let family and friends know you are okay during times of crisis and for you to check on those you may be worried about.

In addition, if the app senses you are in an area affected by disaster, it will send you a reminder to check in and let your loved ones know you’re safe or not in the area impacted by the disaster. The app will then update your Facebook wall and your friends will see that you’re okay.

Brilliant. I wish this app had been around two years ago.

Microsoft Azure and Ebola Cures

You may have heard of Microsoft Azure for Research. Azure is a project that lets scientists use Microsoft’s cloud to upload experiments and work with other scientists in the field.

Microsoft announced on October 20th that access to Azure would be free to any qualified Ebola researcher.

By putting information on the cloud, researchers can more easily develop vaccines and treatments. It will also be used to distribute information on containing and treating the disease.

There is one rule of thumb, however. Those applying need to be not only qualified in the field of Ebola research but affiliated with an academic institution, such as an accredited university.

AT&T Plays with Fire and Pays

The FCC and the FTC joined together and fined AT&T 5 for mobile cramming. This simply means that they allowed mobile charges that were unauthorized by the user to be billed to consumers and then took a kickback of about 35%.

According to href="https://www.techdirt.com/blog/netneutrality/articles/20141019/18370828884/fcc-used-title-ii-to-fine-att-sms-cramming-world-didnt-end-why-would-it-broadband.shtml" target="_blank">Tech Dirt, this was also the largest fine ever given by the FCC.

AT&Ts decision to charge for premium services may have impacted you, especially if you used your mobile device to access the Internet.

As a business owner, being able to access your email, social media and check your websites without fear of incurring out of control charges is a vital part of doing business.

href="http://time.com/3511123/att-bogus-charges/" target="_blank">Time magazine estimates that about 350,000 customers have already asked for refunds. Do you feel you were charged for premium services, such as horoscopes or other tips that you did not actually subscribe to? If so, you have until May 1, 2015 to href="https://www.ftcsettlementatt.com/en/Claim" target="_blank">file a claim with the FTC.

Those are three of the important Internet news items in this cycle.
