Top Lessons you Can Learn from Google’s New Hummingbird Algorithm Changes

alt="Top Lessons you Can Learn from Google’s New Hummingbird Algorithm Changes" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/hummingbird-500x338_c.jpg" />

If you blink these days, Google makes change in their algorithm that can impact your website.

They seem to like catchy little animal-based code names: Panda, Penguin and now Hummingbird.

In real life, a hummingbird might be a fast-moving, beautiful creature that likes to sip from nectar, but in the world of SEO, it can seem more like a pesky insect. Hummingbird is the largest algorithm update in three years, which by nature would make webite owners very nervous as many saw their search engine traffic tank after the rollout of Panda in early 2011. Gianluca Fiorelli expressed the feeling of SEOs everywhere in “Hummingbird Unleashed” on href="http://moz.com/blog/hummingbird-unleashed" target="_blank">The Moz Blog.

Sometimes I think that us SEOs could be wonderful characters for a Woody Allen movie: We are stressed, nervous, paranoid, we have a tendency for sudden changes of mood…okay, maybe I am exaggerating a little bit, but that’s how we tend to (over)react whenever Google announces something.

Relax, We’re Going to Show You the Benefits of Hummingbird

What the Heck Is Hummingbird?

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7153" alt="hummingbird" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/hummingbird1.jpg" width="750" height="422" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/hummingbird1.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/hummingbird1-300x168.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

Change is scary, especially when it can impact your website’s traffic and your livelihood. Although Google tends to be very secretive about the science behind their algorithm, there is a method to the madness and it’s fairly easy to figure out.

First, this latest update seems to focus on targeting searches that match the way humans think and interact.

The changes are meant to integrate with voice controls. During a presentation by the company discussing what Hummingbird can do, one executive pulled out a smart phone and through voice search asked for photos of the Eiffel Tower. Once the photos were found, she then asked via voice how tall the Eiffel Tower was and Google answered. This type of interactive information gathering is something that users are looking for and will help people who are truly interested in your niche topic find it easily.

Will It Impact Your Site?

WHSR does not recommend black hat SEO tactics. If your site uses black hat, then this update, along with others over the last few years, will likely impact you. However, if you’ve been following our suggestions for href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/how-to-write-great-content-per-week-consistently/">writing excellent content and basic, principled SEO tactics, then Hummingbird may help instead of hurt.

Avital Web writes in the href="http://www.sacbee.com/2013/10/25/5851612/google-hummingbird-update-affects.html" target="_blank">Sacramento Bee:

Properly indexed sites are unlikely to have noticed a big change with Hummingbird. Search engine optimization is still beneficial for site users who use consistently high-quality, original content.

Many SEO experts believe Hummingbird is going to turn out to be a positive change, unlike some of the previous algorithm updates, which hurt at first. Instead, those who focus on being an authority on their topic and building excellent content will likely thrive in the new environment.

Eric Enge wrote on href="http://www.copyblogger.com/google-hummingbird/" target="_blank">CopyBlogger:

We used to speak about content being king, and that in some sense is still true, but it is becoming more complex than that now. You now need to think about content that truly addresses specific wants and needs. Does your content communicate relevance to a specific want or need?

Changes to Keep in Mind Going Forward

What does this all mean for your website. Some things are likely to remain the same no matter what changes Google or any other search engine implements.

  • Write content that informs readers and covers topics not found elsewhere.
  • Provide well-written, top-notch material.
  • Interact on social media.
  • Keep a mailing list and keep in touch with site visitors.
  • Update content frequently.

What’s New

According to Robin Sharaya at href="http://googlegeniusonline.blogspot.com/2013/09/google-introduced-hummingbird-algorithm.html" target="_blank">Google Genius, Amit Singhal, Google Senior Vice-President, explained that with the new hummingbird algorithm in place:

Google search engine can make use of more complex search requests a better understanding of the concept of human language, rather than a few scattered words. Such an algorithm improvement is necessary because the data show that many users will enter in the search box to search the complete questions.

  • Make your site mobile friendly. It stands to reason with the new focus on tablets and smart phones that Google will change their algorithm to look at sites that are friendly to these mobile devices.
  • Think ahead about what additional information browsers might want on a topic. One of the biggest features of Hummingbird is the ability to ask for Google to “tell me more” about any given topic. If you write an article about landmark buildings in Chicago, you may want to expand that content into a particular architect, style of building or even topics like haunted locations or tours.
  • Make at least some of your content quickly skimmable.

Online marketing expert href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/jaysondemers/2013/10/01/google-hummingbird-a-mobile-content-marketing-strategy-just-became-essential/" target="_blank">Jayson DeMers wrote in an article about Hummingbird on Forbes:

This means it’s even more crucial that your headlines pop, your content reads vertically, and maybe – breaking away for a second here from the common belief that longer is better – your blog posts are succinct, to-the-point, and light enough to read ‘on the go’.

With Morgan Stanley stating in their href="http://www.morganstanley.com/about/press/articles/4659e2f5-ea51-11de-aec2-33992aa82cc2.html" target="_blank">Mobile Internet Report that mobile device usage will overtake desktop usage in the next five years, coming up with a mobile content strategy is simply smart business anyway. Add to that the fact that the major search engine Google is making changes to meet this growing trend and ignoring making content mobile friendly simply isn’t advisable.

DeMers also makes a recommendation that websites should consider using bit-size teasers that can quickly be read via mobile-friendly e-mails but that lead into more in-depth pieces that users can peruse when they have more time or if they have additional questions about a topic. This method seems like it would work well with the new Hummingbird model of “give me quick info/now tell me more”.

Better Headlines, Grab Their Attention

In “href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/inbound-marketing/boost-conversion-rates/" target="_blank">20 Ways to boost Website Conversion Rates” by Jerry Low, it is recommended that you improve your headlines to get a higher conversion rate on your website. This concept can work with mobile devices as well. Those who use their smart phones to browse for information usually have a few minutes between meetings, time on a subway, a couple of minutes in a checkout line, etc. They are skimming headlines and searching for the one that grabs them. If you aren’t writing grab-worthy headlines, then read href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/featured-articles/how-to-write-a-killer-headline/" target="_blank">How to Write a Killer Headline and come up with ones that will get readers to click on your link.

 The Future of Hummingbird

As with all of Google’s rollouts of algorithm “animals”, Hummingbird is certain to evolve over time. Jon Henshaw, writer for href="http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/advisor/google-hummingbird-means-content-marketers-143119302.html" target="_blank">Yahoo! Small Business Advisor, made this prediction:

As searchers become more comfortable asking more complex questions – especially with a conversational tone – you’ll be able to capture highly targeted traffic by being micro-focused with the content you create.

Although your fundamental tactics of creating high-quality content in your niche won’t change, you will need to think a bit deeper about the topics you cover, add content to answer additional questions users might have (or risk them jumping to another site) and keep things mobile-device friendly.

How Google’s Algorithm Changes Impact Guest Blogging

alt="How Google’s Algorithm Changes Impact Guest Blogging" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/0611-4-500x375_c.jpg" />

class="alignright size-full wp-image-1462" alt="Google Google Google" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0525-4.jpg" width="280" height="152" />

Remember the good ole days? You could go to a friend and ask to write a guest post for his blog, he would write one for yours and you would benefit from one another’s traffic and the backlink? It was fairly cut and dried and seemed like an easy way to market your business and get content for your blog from others.

Today, Google has made so many algorithm changes in the last few years that most SEO experts feel as though their heads are spinning around at warp speed.  There are as many questions as there are new methods for getting a good search engine ranking from Google.

  • Should you let others guest blog on your site?
  • Should you guest blog on other sites?
  • Do backlinks make a difference anymore?
  • Should you not worry about all this nonsense and just focus on reaching new customers by getting your info out there?

We’ll answer these questions in this article and offer a few tips that will help you make a smart decision about guest blogging for your business.

To be sure, the experts all disagree on what the right approach is. Miguel Salcido, a search marketing agency expert for eight years, falls on the side of any exposure and backlink helps with white-hat marketing. In his article titled href="http://socialmediatoday.com/miguelsalcido/1272031/guest-blogging-vital-seo" target="_blank">Guest Blogging Vital to Any SEO Campaign, he says:

For any business that’s implementing a SEO strategy, guest blogging is one tactic that should not be lightly ignored.

However, href="http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-guest-bloggers-are-sleepwalking-their-way-into-penalties" target="_blank">James Finlayson, the SEO Manager at PureBlue, has a different take and says you should be very worried about your method in guest blogging. He suggests:

One person authoring the majority of your links looks like link building – because it is.

I’d like to suggest that the truth is right smack in the middle. Watching where you guest post and who posts on your page is vital, but guest posting is still a valid way to promote.

A Look at Changes in Google’s Algorithm

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1458" alt="Short-Term MozCast Data" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0525-2.jpg" width="600" height="328" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0525-2.jpg 600w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0525-2-300x164.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" />

During intensive studies of Google’s algorithm, which is forever changing these days, a few things have become clear to me as I try out things with my own websites, study advice from other experts and even have worked ranking pages for six months.

  • Google is paying attention to the quality of websites backlinking to you.
  • Google cares whether the content you write is something you can be proud of. Are you sharing it with others? Posting on your social network sites? Are others sharing your work as well?
  • Google cares about who you link to from your site and the quality of that website’s content.

How do these points translate into the decisions you make about guest blogging?

Blogging for Other Sites

Let’s say you decide that you do want to write a few high quality guest posts and offer each one to a website that doesn’t compete with your own business, but complements you. How can you be sure that the link back to your own site is one that will improve your rank with Google, or at least not hurt it?

  • Choose a site that does not link to spammy sites, have a ton of ads or link to low value sites. Yes, even the other links at this site are very important.
  • Read through the content on the site. Is it of value? Would you stay around and read it?
  • What is the site’s rank on Google? Stay away from a low-ranking site as it could pull your own ranking down.
  • Ask the site owner to only link back to your site where it makes sense and not to overdo it. At times, it is okay to simply refer to your site and not link at all as Google Penguin 2.0 is thought to either be able to now or in the near future tell how many times a site is referred to even if there is not a link. Google is looking for buzz about your product.

Allowing Others to Blog on Your Site

Who you link to from your site is just as important as who is linking to you. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Don’t limit yourself to a single guest blogger and only have links going out to one other site.
  • Check the quality of the site you will backlink to. Is it spammy? Is the content good?
  • Only accept articles that are on topic for your site and well written. Putting lackluster content on your site can harm you and won’t help the guest blogger much either.
  • Don’t require a link back to your site, but encourage the guest blogger to talk up his post on social media and in discussion groups.
  • Don’t announce that it is a guest post. Google is pretty smart. Don’t you think they’ll probably look for the words “guest post”, “guest blogger” or even just “guest”?
  • Don’t allow guest bloggers to put links into their own articles or bios. In fact, don’t promise a link in exchange for publishing their article. You may not want to link to their site, but feel the value is of worth. You can mention their site without linking to it, which is still of value, because if the article is great (and if it isn’t, it shouldn’t be on your site), then that person’s author rank will rise with Google. Google addresses this issue in their own href="http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66356" target="_blank">link schemes information. They point blank tell you what not to do, so pay attention!

Some Additional Things Google May Implement Soon

Based on Internet chatter and things Google itself has said, I expect that there will be some changes coming down the pipe. If you can get out in front of these changes, you have the potential to increase your site ranking once Penguin updates again. While some of these are guesses, they are educated guesses.

More Penalties for Irrelevant Content

Google has started to look closely at content in the last few years. Is it relevant? Is it well-written? Is it unique to your site? Does it offer information you can’t find anywhere else? It stands to reason that Google will also look closely at blog posts, even those created by guests. If it does not relate to your site’s overall theme, expect your site to be devalued by Google.

Keyword Rich Text Links Are a Think of the Past

Many SEO experts still put that keyword in the first paragraph of an article, link it out and use it X number of times in the article. This doesn’t work well anymore and soon may not work at all. Google is aware of these “tricks”, probably more so than the typical SEO “expert”, and changes the algorithm consistently in the favor of the web browsing reader and against those playing games.

Author Rank Gains Importance

Google already looks at author rank. This looks at how often a person publishes. How many places on the web. What the content is (quality or not?). As you gain in experience and reach, your Google rank will grow. Finding guest bloggers with a prominent author rank is beneficial to your site.

Social Media Cheats Get Busted

Google is well aware that you can now pay a service and get 100 Twitters about your site or post. I won’t name that site, because it is best you don’t use it. You can be sure that Google will be implementing changes to ensure those who cheat the system and try to make their sites look more popular than they actually are on social media will suffer in either the most recent (May 22, 2013) title="Penguin Updates Roundups and Studies" href="http://www.webrevenue.co/search-engine-optimization/penguin-2-0-roundups-studies-and-losers-analysis/">Penguin update or upcoming ones.

Keep it All in Perspective

Matt Cutt’s, head of Google’s Webspam team, said in a recent video that Google’s goal is not to shut down solid, whitehat SEO tactics, title="Search Engine Land on Matt Cutts Video" href="http://searchengineland.com/googles-matt-cutts-black-hat-link-spammers-less-likely-to-show-up-in-search-results-after-summer-159185" target="_blank">but blackhat tactics that aim to shortcut the system by taking the easy way around rather than providing quality for web browsers. Pretty simple.

Like it or not, for now, Google is the largest source of web traffic for most websites. It is important to be aware of changes and trends so that you can adjust your content accordingly. Spend some time cleaning up old guest posts on your site that might be link heavy or unrelated to current content.

In the end, it all boils down to creating great content that others will want to share. If you focus on that, much of the SEO issues will be automatically taken care of and your job as you go back and make sure you rank as high as possible will be much easier than if you try to play games and use tricks.

Web Hosting News Update: Google’s Quantum Computing, Hybrid Cloud Backup and Celebrity Photo Hacking

alt="Web Hosting News Update: Google’s Quantum Computing, Hybrid Cloud Backup and Celebrity Photo Hacking" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/quantum-500x337_c.jpg" />

Keeping up-to-date with the latest hosting industry news can help you have a website that covers any back-end needs as well as front-end preferences from your visitors. While we can’t cover all the news at one time here at WHSR, we will try to keep you up-to-date on the latest advances, security concerns and research.

Quantum Computing

Quantum computers gain their power from atoms to complete tasks.

If your thirst for more speed and more memory has not yet been quenched, then you’ll be happy to hear that Google has announced plans to build quantum information processors at its artificial intelligence lab. The project is called “href="https://plus.google.com/+QuantumAILab/posts/UcWGvc9Y6dU" target="_blank">Hardware Initiative”. The possibilities for this initiative are endless. Not only might we see faster computers that run a bit differently than today’s models in the near future, but the impact will eventually trickle down to Internet servers as faster, more powerful computers work from the back-end of web hosting companies.

Hybrid Cloud Backup

If your company uses a hybrid cloud, or you back up any of your data (website or otherwise) on a cloud-based system, then you’ll be interested to hear that iDrive, the online backup storage provider, recently released an upgrade that allows users to back up data not only off their local drives but also to href="http://myhostnews.com/2014/09/online-backup-provider-idrive-launches-hybrid-cloud-backup-functionality" target="_blank">backup data in the cloud. While your server may provide a restore option, it is always smart to have another backup available. Files can get corrupted and then you’ll be in serious trouble if you don’t have important data stored. The hybrid backup feature allows website owners to back up SQL, Exchange, Sharepoint and Oracle data.

Internet Slowdown Day

id="attachment_10792" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption alignright">class="size-full wp-image-10792" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/loading.jpg" alt="Image credit: Mathias Klang" width="300" height="169" />class="wp-caption-text">Image credit: href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/wrote/1405887615/in/photostream/">Mathias Klang

Have you heard of href="http://www.cnet.com/news/top-websites-join-internet-slowdown-day-in-symbolic-protest-of-fast-lanes/" target="_blank">Internet Slowdown Day?

I hadn’t heard of this either until it popped up in my news feed one day and I went to research it a bit more. Apparently, on September 10th, some net activities will join together to show people how slow the Internet might run if fast lanes are allowed under the new Net Neutrality rules that the FCC is considering implementing. The goal is to make Internet users aware of the potential change and why those for a free and fair Internet should protect Net Neutrality.

Some of the sites participating include:

  • Reddit
  • Vimeo
  • Foursquare
  • Boing Boing
  • WordPress

The issue with the new rules is that it would allow Internet service providers to offer premium services so that some users would have even faster access than others. This could be bad for other users. As a website owner, you should be concerned because it could impact the traffic your site receives or the speed at which some users are able to access your site and services.

 Celebrity Photo Hacking

If there is one thing that is certain in today’s tech-driven world, nothing is ever entirely safe from hackers. This was proven yet gain the recent celebrity hacking scandal, where hackers were able to gain access to the private photos celebrities had on the cloud. In response, Apple has announced that they are beefing up their iCloud security features and users will be notified of any changes, particularly password changes.

Apple CEO Tim Cook href="http://online.wsj.com/articles/tim-cook-says-apple-to-add-security-alerts-for-icloud-users-1409880977" target="_blank">said to the Wall Street Journal:

“When I step back from this terrible scenario that happened and say what more could we have done, I think about the awareness piece. I think we have a responsibility to ratchet that up. That’s not really an engineering thing.”

Website owners should take heed of the occurrence, however, and make sure that any cloud where they store important data has security in place and also updates that security regularly. Hackers may be a pain in the neck, but they are smart. They eventually will figure out a way around most security patches. The only way to continuously protect your website and your clients from an attack is to continuously add new and more advanced safeguards.

WHSR brings you the latest tech news so you can keep your site functioning at top capabilities.
