Little Oak Hosting Review

alt="Little Oak Hosting Review" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/littleoak-500x310_c.jpg" />

Sometimes choosing the biggest company isn’t the best way to host your website. After all, who knows where that money goes when you send it to a big corporation? If you prefer doing business with small companies that are an integral part of a real community, then Little Oak may be the perfect fit for your website hosting needs.

* Note: We do not hold a Little Oak hosting account at time of review.

The “Little Oak” of Web Hosting

Founded in 2007 by a group of web developers and graphic designers, this company is a relative newcomer to the industry. Their main expertise is working with Macs, and they proudly claim to be the best choice for websites created on Mac computers. They have also formed a partnership with RapidWeaver, a web authoring program created specifically for Apple computer products. The company’s reputation is largely based on providing hosting specifically for customers prefer using RapidWeaver.

Little Oak is based in Torrance, California, a suburb of Los Angeles located along the West Coast, and that’s where all their employees work; they do not outsource any positions. Since opening the doors in 2007, the company is now hosting over 400,000 accounts.

Shared Cloud Hosting Accounts For Mac Users

style="text-align: center;">href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/go/littleoak">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5549" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/littleoak-hosting-plans.jpg" alt="littleoak hosting plans" width="750" height="290" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/littleoak-hosting-plans.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/littleoak-hosting-plans-300x116.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

Unlike most other website hosting companies, Little Oak offers shared hosting plans but prefers to call them “cloud hosting” (why not just call it what it is – shared hosting?). Customers have a choice of three cloud-based hosting plans. The packages are called Sapling (/year, .67/month), Habitat-Pro (0/year, .33/month) and Chestnut-Pro (0/yr, .67/month).

You can host unlimited websites with each plan but there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth and storage. For instance, the Sapling package allows for 5GB/month of disk space and 50GB bandwidth; Habitat includes 15GB disk storage and 500GB bandwidth; and Chestnut comes with 25GB/1T.

Other than these limits, Little Oak website hosting packages do include all the standard features you would expect:

  • Unlimited MySQL databases
  • Free site builder software
  • Unlimited domain aliases and subdomains
  • Unlimited POP3/IMAP4 email accounts
  • Statistics tracking
  • Google and Yahoo advertising credits

Little Oak web hosting also supports Quicktime, Real Networks, Macromedia Flash, Shockwave and Microsoft Silverlight files and gives customers access to DNS management. It also supports a lot of different programming languages, inclulding PHP 5.3, Perl 5, IonCube Loader, Javascript and Ajax. All the major blogging platforms (WordPress, Joomla, Drupal) are available as well.

The control panel for your account as referred to as the “Account Manager”. It’s not cPanel or vDeck so it may be proprietary software.

Another unique feature of Little Oak’s packages is that they don’t require customers to sign up for two years at a time to get the best deal. They only offer accounts for one year at a time. It is rather refreshing not to get the constant upsell to a longer contract period. However, they do not offer month-to-month hosting plans, either.

Although Little Oak’s website has links for dedicated hosting and Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting accounts using both Linux and Windows server operating systems, they were not live at the time of this writing. Looks like that, in the future, they will be offering these services, which is a great idea for those who want to upgrade their accounts.

Datacenter Security and Network Reliability

Although it’s a small company, Little Oak uses Tier-1 network providers located in One Wilshire Building, which is purported to be “the most connected building in the western United States” while their datacenter is located in Torrance, California, USA.

Their servers are Intel dual-core machines in a load balancing cluster using a network-attached storage array for file uploads. They run CentOS 6 and Apache 2.2+, pretty standard in the industry.

Software is updated and patched regularly and backed up nightly to help prevent service interruptions. The network hardware is monitored 24/7 by senior administrators.

All that security helps them uphold a 100 percent uptime guarantee. If your site goes down for 10 minutes or more in any month, you get a credit for 10 percent of that month’s hosting fee. Of course, the guarantee doesn’t apply to scheduled downtime, emergency maintenance or anything you might do that affects your site’s performance; again, pretty standard stuff – but this is the first company I’ve found to guarantee 100 percent uptime.

I found a recent statistic online showing 99.98 percent uptime for Little Oak websites. It has been monitored since October 2010. That’s considered excellent, but not out of the ordinary.

Live Customer Support Provided by Little Oak’s California Team

If support from native-English speaking representatives is important to you, Little Oak provides it via phone, live chat or email. They also have a video catalog and an online Knowledgebase to find answers to frequent questions – but it doesn’t seem to be populated with much information. I tried doing a few simple searches such as “migrate account”, “media upload” and even “WordPress” which yielded no results.

So how is their customer service? It’s hard to say. I did find one very dissatisfied customer online who complained of a Googlebot error message due to Little Oak administrators temporarily blocking search engine bots because they claimed it was causing too much activity, which put a strain on their servers. Other than that, I couldn’t find a good sampling of real customers who have reviewed Little Oak’s support services as of yet.

Little Oak does have a social media presence to post alerts and updates – but the accounts are used quite infrequently. Not only that, I really had to dig to find them; there are no links from their website to their Facebook or Twitter pages. Why wouldn’t you want your customers and others to easily find you on social media sites?

Is Little Oak Hosting Worth Checking Out?

Let’s take a minute to recap what we’ve learned about Little Oak. Here are the advantages of their hosting packages:

  • Specifically tailored to Mac users
  • RapidWeaver partner
  • Reliable hosting with 100% uptime guarantee
  • American-based support
  • Future availability of dedicated and VPS hosting

Now, here are what I see as the disadvantages of Little Oak hosting:

  • Price isn’t great
  • No monthly payment plans
  • No track record in regard to customer service and technical support

Unless you are a Mac user who loves RapidWeaver, it would be difficult to recommend this web hosting company.

There are plenty of competitors who offer heftier packages with unlimited space and bandwidth at cheaper prices. Instead, I urge you to check out my review on title="A2 Hosting Review" href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-review/a2-hosting/">A2 Hosting, href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-review/webhostinghub/">WebHostingHub, or href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-review/ipage/">iPage, a couple of better-rated and more economical choices for personal and small business websites.

Little Oak Hosting: Updates & User Review

alt="Little Oak Hosting: Updates & User Review" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/littleoak-hosting-500x274_c.jpg" />

Some time ago I took a closer look on California-based hosting company, Little Oak, and title="Little Oak Hosting Review" href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-review/little-oak/">wrote a review based on my online research. From my perception the web host seems like a good one – there were quite some trustable positive reviews, Realmac recommended the host, and the hosting service is backed by 100% uptime SLA. My opinion, however, shouldn’t be fully trusted. Afterall, I was never a Little Oak customer and I am not familiar with web development in Mac environment.

Little Oak Hosting Went Down – March 11/12th

About two days ago href="https://twitter.com/littleoaknet/status/443475282293301248">Little Oak network crashed and their users were left in the dark for few hours. WHSR visitor, Chay Spelman, buzzed me about the incident; and after exchanging a few emails, we decided to do an online interview about his experience at Little Oak.

Little Oak User Review

Here goes our Q&A session.

How long you have been with Little Oak (LO)?

Have been with LO for just over a year. They were recommended as a perfect hosting company for Rapidweaver sites by Realmac Software.

Can you tell us the URL of your site hosted at Little Oak?

Our site URL is href="http://www.theminiworld.com" target="_blank">www.theminiworld.com. We specialise in restorations and parts for Classic Minis.

So in overall how was your experience at Little Oak? What’s the best thing you like about the hosting company? And, what’s the worst that you dislike?

In general they were better than the last hosting company I used (Web Intellects). I put up with them for nearly 10 years! I expected a breath of fresh air but it was much of the same.

The cute design of their website installs confidence and the fact that they are approved by Realmac software was the main appeal.

From the start there were problems. They needed nearly a week to confirm my Paypal payment for some unknown reason. Then they were slow in transferring my domains. Also my e-mails are down at least once a month.

LO have a Facebook page which had no news or notifications posted regarding their latest outage. Not a professional way to treat clients whose livelihoods depend on their sites and emails to be functioning 24/7.

Chay thanks a lot for sharing this with us.

I hope this helps others out there who don’t need the grief and hassle of dealing with yet another hosting nightmare.

Better Disaster Recovery Plan, Perhaps?

I did a little digging and read quite a number of user feedbacks on Little Oak before writing this post. To be fair, I think Little Oak is not that bad. Things go wrong all the time – even site as big as href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/01/24/gmail-goes-down-across-the-world/" target="_blank">Google goes down sometimes, it’s insane to expect absolute perfect performance from a small web host like Little Oak, yeah?

What bothers me, however,  is how the company dealt with this unexpected server/network outage. Users were left in the dark for hours and the folks at Little Oak certainly should do better than this.

@L.0. Jeremy: I think you are sadly misinformed. I’m assuming your Twitter account is littleoak.net (at any rate that’s the account a lot of folks tweeted to). On that account Little Oak posted about the outage about 3-5 hours after the outage began: not exactly “timely”. So, yes, you posted, but you also posted way way late. – href="http://forums.realmacsoftware.com/profile/342/mitchellm">mitchellm

Read thishref="http://forums.realmacsoftware.com/discussion/66625/is-little-oak-completely-down-3-10-14" target="_blank"> thread on Realmac for more details (caution: angry users rant ahead) as well as the timestamp of Little Oak’s tweets below – It seems to me that the company only tweeted about the outage after the issue has been fixed.

Top 5 Little Known Social Media Sites You May Have Overlooked

alt="Top 5 Little Known Social Media Sites You May Have Overlooked" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/social-media-sites-500x272_c.jpg" />

Think back to five or six years ago. Who were the networking giants online? People hadn’t heard of Instagram (growing in popularity with young people today) and many didn’t know how to tweet. Now, “hashtag” is a part of people’s everyday vocabulary.

You can be sure that there will be new social media sites launched this year and that some of the older players may fall out of a favor (think MySpace) and newer players will take over in popularity.

id="attachment_11396" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption alignright">href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/socialmedia-marketing/top-5-little-known-social-media-sites-you-may-have-overlooked/attachment/social-media-history/" rel="attachment wp-att-11396">class="size-full wp-image-11396" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/social-media-history.jpg" alt="social media history" width="300" height="300" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/social-media-history.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/social-media-history-150x150.jpg 150w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/social-media-history-130x130.jpg 130w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />class="wp-caption-text">Photo Credit: href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/47681660@N06/12199321103/">Cendrine Marrouat

Lesser Known Social Media Sites to Add to Your Marketing

If you’re href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/socialmedia-marketing/why-people-hate-social-media-promotions-and-how-you-can-promote-successfully/" target="_blank">doing any social media marketing (SMM), you are probably already promoting your business on sites like:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google+
  • LinkedIn
  • Pinterest

There are the current most popular sites for networking online. A smart self-promoter will start with these big five. In fact, if you only have enough time to promote on these, stick with the current big players.

However, as you have more time for promotions or more helpers for social media marketing, there are a few additional sites you’ll want to add to the list.

Tagged

href="http://www.alexa.com/topsites/category/Computers/Internet/On_the_Web/Online_Communities/Social_Networking" target="_blank">Alexa ranks Tagged.com as number fifteen out of the social media networks available and describes it as one of the top social networking sites in the world.

It has a global rank of 550 and a bounce rate of only 10.3 percent. The average visitor spends an average of 20:48 minutes on the site. This is impressive, since most visitors bounce from a site in less than a minute.

Tagged was founded in 2004. Some of the features will be readily recognizable and are similar to sites like Facebook. You can browse profiles of other users, share “tags” and play games. Tagged can be linked to your Facebook or Google+ accounts.

To start using Tagged, sign up for a free account. Once you sign up for the account and log in, you can create a custom profile page. Post a biography, share your interests, upload photos and post updates for those you are linked up to.

Quantcast estimates that Tagged has about 18.6 million members globally, so the potential to reach a wide new audience is there.

class="meteor-icon" style="font-size:130% !important;">
class="icon-file-text-alt" style="color:inherit !important;">
URL: href="http://www.tagged.com/" target="_blank">www.tagged.com

Ask.fm

This site offers a unique approach to interacting socially with others and could be an excellent opportunity to share your expertise on a topic with others. The platform is quite simply a profile and an invitation for others to ask you questions, which you then answer.

When someone asks a pertinent question, you can quickly establish yourself as an expert with well thought out answers. Just be aware that there are a high number of young people on the site and some may choose to hound you a bit. Be prepared to ignore their nasty comments.

The site was founded in Latvia in 2010, so this is a fairly new site. It was formed to compete with Formspring. The site has had some hiccups as young people used it to anonymously cyber bully and this is through to have resulted in suicides by several young people.

However, it is a site that has taken over Formspring as far as traffic. The potential is there to reach a new audience in a way that other business owners may not be doing. Is your competition on Ask.fm? There are about 60 million users worldwide on the site, so it could be worth your time to test it out and see if you get any traffic from there.

Yelp

Do you have a presence on Yelp? Yelp is a review site. People go online and review products and services they’ve had a chance to try out.

The site gets about 139 million unique visitors each month. The company was founded in 2004.

So, if the site is one where others go on there and review your business, how can you use the networking aspect to promote your own website?

There are several things you can do that will help you have a more professional presence on Yelp. First, set up your business profile by going to biz.yelp.com.

Fill in your profile completely with as many details as possible. Add photos of your business and a complete description. If there is already a profile for your business on Yelp, you can “claim” it.

Yelp allows business owners to respond to reviews. This is a goldmine for you to connect with those who have come to your business and to handle any issues that have occurred.

Did you get a negative review? Respond with concern and respect. Not only will you have the opportunity to win that customer back and give you another chance, other potential customers will see how you handled a difficult situation and may be willing to give you a try.

Hi5

One of the advantages to using Hi5 is that you’ll reach users from more than 200 different countries.

The site is not as popular as a social networking medium in the United States, but there are plenty of other social networking sites already meeting that need in the US.

If you want to reach potential site visitors from other countries, Hi5 is worth a look. It was founded in 2003. The site has more than 80 million registered users.

Hi5 is similar to other social networking sites as far as the ability to post updates, connect with others and network. However, there is a big focus on entertainment on Hi5. You’ll find a wide variety of games.

Once you’ve established a presence on Hi5, you may want to consider offering a game that relates to your website to draw even more attention, since that is a popular way to spend time on this social media site.

Buzznet is a bit different than some of the other social media networks out there, but is well suited to promoting a website.

The focus on this platform is sharing ideas, events and interests. What an opportunity to get the word out about what you do by sharing news stories and events you come across. Much of the focus is on celebrities and events surrounding them, so if you can tie your topic into celebrities in some way, you can really reach some people on this site.

The site was started in 2005. There are about 10 million registered users on the site.

Wrapping Up

There are dozens of additions social media sites you could choose from. These are five to get you started.

Remember to use landing pages to help test the effectiveness of any promotions you do, learn each of the social media sites before promoting on there and always href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/7-quick-ways-to-promote-yourself-and-your-blog/" target="_blank">add value over blatant self-promotional posts to avoid sounding spammy.
