How to Make Money as an Affiliate

alt="How to Make Money as an Affiliate" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/make-money-online-500x288_c.jpg" />

I am sure you have heard of the term “Affiliate Marketer” and have read about people online making hundreds, thousands or even millions of dollars online from affiliate marketing. In its simplest form, Affiliate marketing is a performance based business where companies pay people who promote their products. These people are known as affiliates.

Some of the things you have purchased on the internet came from a recommendation from a website you were visiting. The owner of that website would have made a commission due to your purchase. The more products that referred customers purchase, the more money an affiliate will make.

Most affiliate companies pay affiliates through Cost Per Action (CPA). This means the affiliate earns money whenever an action takes place. This usually takes the form of a sale (when someone buys something) or a lead (when someone signs up to something e.g. newsletter, free trial, registration etc.).

Many companies have their own in-house affiliate program. This is common amongst large internet companies such as Amazon and small companies who only sell one or two products. The other option for companies is to use an affiliate network such as title="Commission Junction" href="http://www.cj.com/">Commission Junction or title="LinkShare" href="http://www.linkshare.com/">LinkShare. These networks list thousands of offers and products for affiliates.

style="text-align: center;">class="aligncenter wp-image-1784 border" alt="Commission Junction" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/commission-junction.png" width="750" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/commission-junction.png 600w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/commission-junction-300x170.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" />

As an affiliate, there are many benefits to using an affiliate network. In-house affiliate programs and affiliate networks all have minimum payment thresholds. It is much easier to reach a payment threshold if you have hundreds or thousands of different products and services to promote. Frustratingly, many in-house affiliate programs have unrealistic payment thresholds. I have came across affiliate programs that pay for the sale of a product yet they do not pay affiliates until they reach 0 in sales. This means that any commissions you earn will be lost if you do not reach 0 in sales. Collectively this can be a problem as you could have a lot of money spread across dozens of in-house affiliate programs that will never pay you. This is less of a problem when you can promote lots of different products from one network.

Choosing which product to promote is very important. You may be tempted to promote products with the biggest commissions, however generous commissions mean nothing if you cannot convince anyone to actually buy the product. Affiliate networks help you with your decision by listing offers you can promote in table format. Common information is payout, Type (e.g. lead or sale), Earnings Per Click (EPC) and Conversion rate.

Earnings Per Click informs you how much you can expect to make per visitor you send to the offer. For example, an offer may have a payout of but an EPC of .50. The conversion rate lets you know what percentage of your traffic converts into a sale. You can work out the EPC if you know the conversion rate and vice versa. In this example, the offer with a payout of has a conversion rate of 3.75%.

How reliable the EPC and conversion rates that affiliate networks provide depends on how popular the offer is. The more people who are promoting the product or service, the more reliable the information is. You may be able to convert much higher than the average affiliate or you may struggle to get any sales. It all comes down to how targeted your traffic is. Take two different websites for example: A sports news website and a website that reviews sports equipment. The news website would be able to get a good conversion rate promoting any sports related product, however the review website would get a better conversion rate on a product such as a sports GPS watch. The reason is simple; people are on that website to buy something. They aren’t there just to read the latest sports news.

Bear this mind when you are choosing a product or service to promote. The more closely related an offer is to your audience, the more likely it is you will convert visitors into sales and leads.

Without further ado, let’s look at some of the most popular ways of making money through affiliate marketing :)

1. Reviews

Reviews are a great way of promoting offers. There is a wealth of information online for people who do not buy impulsively. I know because I am one of them. It normally takes minutes for me to decide whether to buy a WordPress plugin that could be used on one of my websites, however when it comes to buying something like a new laptop, television or phone, I am borderline obsessive. It is not uncommon for me to spend weeks researching a product to make sure I pick the right one.

I know many people are like me.

This is why a review is such a great way of promoting a product. People are looking for information about a product so if you can provide that to them, there is a high chance that they will click on your link to the product and buy the product. Reviews have been one of the most profitable way for me to make money online. On my last major blog income from reviews generated more than 75% of the website’s income, far more than what I was making from ad sales etc.

The owner of this site, Jerry Low, also has a lot of experience in this field. On his hosting comparison website Web Hosting Secret Revealed he href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-reviews/">reviews hosting companies in great detail. This goes a long way in convincing people to visit a site and your review may be the one that convinces that person to click BUY.

style="text-align: center;">class=" wp-image-6018 aligncenter border" alt="webhostingsecretrevealed" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/webhostingsecretrevealed.jpg" width="750" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/webhostingsecretrevealed.jpg 600w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/webhostingsecretrevealed-300x154.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" />

2. Banners

Most websites sell their banner space though it can sometimes be more profitable to promote an offer in its place. With a past website I struggled to sell one particular banner area for more than 0 per month but I later found one particular offer that made me twice as much.

style="text-align: center;">class="aligncenter wp-image-1791 border" alt="Banner Ads" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/banner-ads.png" width="750" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/banner-ads.png 600w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/banner-ads-300x86.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" />

I have found some reviews I have written have got a lot of traffic despite the website it was written on not being that popular. This is mainly due to the article ranking high for relevant keywords in search engines. Banners are different as they are generally shown throughout your website. Unless your website is focused on one specific topic, you will probably see a poorer conversion rate from banner ads than you will for reviews. Plus you also need to take title="Ad Blindness" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banner_blindness">ad blindness into account.

It is not fair to compare reviews to banners as they are completely different things. Reviews take time to write whilst it only takes a minute to copy the code for a banner and paste it on your website. The more targeted traffic your website has, the more your banner will be displayed. Therefore, all things considered equal, you should see a rise in banner revenue as your website traffic increases.

3. Promoting Offers Directly

The vast majority of affiliate marketers who are making hundreds of thousands of dollars per month are doing so by promoting offers directly. They do this by purchasing traffic and then sending people directly to the offer or to a landing page that promotes the offer (note: many offers do not permit direct linking to the offer page, therefore you need to send visitors to a landing page). Once they find an offer that is profitable, they try and scale it upwards. For example, they might invest - a day promoting an offer to see if it is profitable. If they are able to turn a profit, they will start increasing their advertising expenditure in order to increase their profit.

Affiliate marketers are known to spend thousands of dollars before finding their first profitable campaign. Even once they have gained experience in making money through this method, they will still see a lot of ups and downs. The difference between a profitable campaign and one that costs them money is very small. That is why affiliate marketers spend so much time analysing data.

style="text-align: center;">class="aligncenter wp-image-1793 border" alt="Affiliate Marketing" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/affiliate-marketing.png" width="750" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/affiliate-marketing.png 600w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/affiliate-marketing-300x243.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" />

If you are new to working online and do not have a large budget, promoting offers directly in this manner is not advised. This is something title="Tyler Cruz" href="http://www.tylercruz.com/">Tyler Cruz spoke about recently. He stressed that you title="How To Get Started in Affiliate Marketing With No Money" href="http://www.tylercruz.com/how-to-get-started-in-affiliate-marketing-with-no-money/">shouldn’t get into this type of affiliate marketing unless you have a lot of money you can afford to lose.

If you have some money to spare and want to try out affiliate marketing, I recommend signing up to a reliable network such as title="MarketLeverage" href="http://www.marketleverage.com/">MarketLeverage or title="PeerFly" href="http://peerfly.com">PeerFly and then finding an offer that is converting well. Then try and push traffic to the offer using a PPC service such as title="Google Adwords" href="http://adwords.google.com">Google Adwords or title="7Search" href="http://www.7search.com">7Search. Start off with long tail keywords that will not cost you much money. Hopefully you will start to see some conversions after a few days and you can then start tweaking things, changing the keywords you are targeting, the website you are buying traffic from etc.

The best way to learn how to make money in this manner is by doing it yourself. It really is a case of trial and error when it comes to making a campaign profitable.

4. Email Marketing

Top bloggers and marketers continue to tell others that “The money is in the list”.

They are 100% correct. A targeted email list with loyal subscribers is a one way ticket to making money consistently. There are email marketers who have hundreds of thousands of subscribers and can make thousands of dollars from one mailing simply by recommending a product.

There are different ways to make money from email marketing. The main ways to profit from a mailing are:

  • Sending an email which recommends a product or service – You will then be paid an affiliate commission when one of your subscribers but the offer.
  • Using the list to promote your own products – Some marketers have made millions by doing this. Even a simple eBook that is 100 pages long can made tens of thousands of dollars within a few days if the marketer has a big enough list.
  • Selling ads – Many email marketers send out mailings on behalf of others for a fee. The more subscribers they have, the higher their fees are for an ad placement.

The frequency of mailings is something that many people disagree on. There are marketers who are sending emails to subscribers with offers every day. Constantly sending offers to readers generally sees unsubscribe rates shoot through the roof so marketers are constantly trying to replace the subscribers that have left. This constant churning of subscribers means that part of their income has to be reinvested in getting new subscribers or the list will die.

class="alignright size-full wp-image-1796 border" alt="Web Revenue Subscription Form" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/subscribe-web-revenue.png" width="300" height="136" />Long term, it is more profitable to build up a good relationship with subscribers. When subscribers know you and trust you, they are more likely to purchase your products and products you recommend. Some marketers have such a loyal following that they email every day and do not see large unsubscribe rates.

I believe that emailing subscribers at least once a week is best. If you email less frequently, say once a month, subscribers may be less responsive. It is quite common for people to subscribe to a website for updates and then make a complaint when an email is sent to them because they forget they ever signed up. This is one of the downsides to emailing infrequently.

It is cheaper to build up an email list if you have an existing website. If you do not, you will have to build your list up by buying ads on other people’s newsletters. Blogging can be timeconsuming so if you would rather built up your list through advertising, I recommend starting off with a service such as title="Safe Swaps" href="http://www.safe-swaps.com">Safe Swaps for some targeted ad buys and ad swaps.

Tips: An email marketing tool can make or break your email marketing campaign. Jerry uses GetResponse to build and manage his email list – check out his href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/web-tools/my-quick-review-on-getresponse/">GetResponse review here.

5. All of the Above

The process of promoting offers directly is what many people think of when they hear the term “Affiliate Marketing”, however it refers to any method of promoting an offer in return for a commission. There are some people who only do direct offer promotion or email marketing, though in my experience most affiliate marketers use all of the above methods.

Blogs are the prime example of this. Most blogs are monetized using reviews, banner ads, email marketing and embedded affiliate links within content.

style="text-align: center;">class="aligncenter wp-image-1798 border" alt="All of the Above" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/all-of-the-above.png" width="750" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/all-of-the-above.png 600w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/all-of-the-above-300x211.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" />

I hope you have enjoyed this overview of affiliate marketing and it has given you some ideas on how you can make money on the internet.

Good luck,
Kevin

How to Make Money Blogging: Becoming a Product Reviewer

alt="How to Make Money Blogging: Becoming a Product Reviewer" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/review-book-500x520_c.jpg" />

One of the greatest pleasures of being a blogger is writing product reviews. The excitement of getting packages in the mail, the thrill of finding a new product that helps my family and the joy of sharing it with my audience has led to my career in professional blogging. So how can you get started? This primer will show you how to get started as a product reviewer.

You Are an Influencer

id="attachment_9730" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption alignright">href="http://mom-blog.com/2013/11/special-needs-special-diets-holiday-gift-guide-wish-list/" target="_blank">class="wp-image-9730 size-full" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/review-giftguide.jpg" alt="holiday gift guide" width="300" height="394" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/review-giftguide.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/review-giftguide-228x300.jpg 228w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />class="wp-caption-text">Holiday gift guide with reviews & affiliate links

Start thinking of yourself as an influencer: you can influence your audience’s behaviors and buying habits. As your readers grow to trust you, you will naturally want to recommend things that are useful to them. If there are products, services or even destinations that you’ve already enjoyed that fit with your blog’s focus, go ahead and write a piece about them. Once you do that, you are an influencer – it’s as simple as that.

At first, you won’t get paid or get free products, but you can monetize your reviews easily. Create a blog post that recommends products and put in your affiliate links from programs like href="https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/" target="_blank">Amazon’s Affiliate Program, href="http://www.cj.com/" target="_blank">Commission Junction or href="http://www.shareasale.com/" target="_blank">Share a Sale. Ideas include holiday gift guides, recipes with affiliate link ingredients or “Must Have” posts featuring things like top technology, seasonal fashions or back to school items. (Here are href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/how-do-i-get-started-making-money-as-a-new-blogger/" target="_blank">additional ideas on how to monetize your blog.)

href="http://mom-blog.com/2013/11/special-needs-special-diets-holiday-gift-guide-wish-list/" target="_blank">An example is this gift guide I created for my readers last Christmas. Gift guides are great because when you grow, you can charge companies to participate in your guide.

Selecting Items to Review

The first thing you need to consider is your audience. Is this something that only benefits you, or would you naturally recommend this product to a friend who matches your target audience? You can certainly review every product that comes your way, but make sure your products pass all three of these points:

  • They are something you want and can use;
  • Are of interest/use to your readers or desired audience; and
  • Fit the theme of your blog.

If not, your review seem too self-serving. For example, a blog on general parenting is going to have a wide selection of products to choose from. However, a blog about “green living with kids” will have a smaller selection of relevant products and services – only eco-friendly children’s items. A post on the latest tech gadget there won’t fly with that audience.

The Components of a Great Review

There are several parts to writing a review that is both engaging for your audience and beneficial to prospective clients who come your way.

1. An Eye Catching Photo

Brands LOVE IT when you make their product look good, so take plenty of photos and do everything you can to make the image look good. If it’s a cooking product, show the product and the resulting dish you created. If you cannot take a good photo, ask for an image from the client – better to have something that looks good than nothing at all but href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/graphics-is-not-my-thing-part-1-take-better-photos/" target="_blank">you must learn to take reasonably good photos.. Travel reviews lend themselves to great photos, but you may need to get creative for a service. For example, if you were reviewing a cleaning service, you can shoot the logo on the truck, the team and their equipment, and before/after photos of the areas they clean.

href="http://mom-blog.com/2014/04/frozen-apps-books-dolls-delight-child/" target="_blank">Here is a review for books from “Frozen.” Notice that I have multiple pinnable images, so I can repin from time to time, and change the pin board and topic each time I do.

id="attachment_9727" style="width: 704px" class="wp-caption aligncenter">href="http://mom-blog.com/2014/04/frozen-apps-books-dolls-delight-child/" target="_blank">class="wp-image-9727 size-full" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/review-frozen.jpg" alt="Product review - childrens books" width="694" height="922" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/review-frozen.jpg 694w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/review-frozen-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 694px) 100vw, 694px" />class="wp-caption-text">Make pinnable images

id="attachment_9728" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption alignright">href="http://mom-blog.com/2014/04/zarbees-natural-seasonal-relief/" target="_blank">class="wp-image-9728 size-full" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/zarbees-300x300.jpg" alt="zarbee's image" width="300" height="300" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/zarbees-300x300.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/zarbees-300x300-150x150.jpg 150w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/zarbees-300x300-130x130.jpg 130w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />class="wp-caption-text">Image supplied by client (Zarbee)

2. The Benefits of This Item or Service

Write everything you love about this product, but pay attention to what the brand is promoting currently as well.

For example, if it’s an allergy product and it’s springtime, you can position the content on how challenging this time of year is for you and other allergy sufferers. A word of caution: be honest! Don’t make stuff up; highlight the positives you enjoyed that fit the brand’s campaign if and when possible or else just stick to the facts. Line up as many positives as you can and emphasize anything you loved about it.

href="http://mom-blog.com/2014/04/zarbees-natural-seasonal-relief/" target="_blank">Here is my seasonal ad campaign from Zarbee’s. I used their photo since I had not received the product yet.

3. The Flaws

id="attachment_9726" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption alignright">href="http://mom-blog.com/2013/11/social-media-engagement-for-dummies/" target="_blank">class="wp-image-9726 size-full" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/review-book.jpg" alt="review - social media for dummies" width="300" height="312" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/review-book.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/review-book-288x300.jpg 288w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />class="wp-caption-text">How to write a negative without ruining the review

At a conference one year, I attended a Q&A with a panel of brands. The critical take away I learned from a brand representative was that nothing is perfect. If you write a 100% positive review, no one will believe you and you’ll lose credibility.

Write about the flaws, but be gentle. Remember, you’re trying to drive people to purchase this product. However, if the product is a dud or the flaws are too large to actually recommend it and you received the product for pay, immediately contact the vendor and ask them what to do. They may want you to stop working on the review, they may repair the flaw or they may not know about the problem and ask you to delay the post. Talking to them is always the answer and it gives them a positive perspective on you.

href="http://mom-blog.com/2013/11/social-media-engagement-for-dummies/" target="_blank">Here is an example of how I covered the flaws in this book, but redeemed it with what good the book had to offer.

4. Your Overall Opinion and Product Info

Once you’ve listed the positives and the flaws, you can give your general opinion – be as creative as you like. Make a rating system, gives a thumb’s up, show a smiling child – whatever works best for you. Finally, give the details on the product, especially a link where to get it.

5. A Compelling Story to Wrap Them All In

Today, storytelling is the best way to write good copy. This is another thing brands LOVE. If it’s good enough, they may even share your review with their audience – and that’s great exposure for your blog. If you start with a compelling personal story and how the product contributed to your life, you’ll also get better reader response. If it’s good enough, they may even share your review with their audience – and that’s great exposure for your blog.

href="http://mom-blog.com/2014/04/one-banana-two-banana-overripe-fruit/" target="_blank">Here is a paid review campaign I did for Silk inspired by my frustration of what to do with too many bananas in my house!

id="attachment_9725" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption aligncenter">href="http://mom-blog.com/2014/04/one-banana-two-banana-overripe-fruit/" target="_blank">class="wp-image-9725 size-full" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/reivew-silk.jpg" alt="Silk Milk review" width="300" height="420" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/reivew-silk.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/reivew-silk-214x300.jpg 214w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />class="wp-caption-text">How to tell a compelling story

6. Full Disclosure and Proper Linking

FTC regulations require you to disclose when you are blogging with any kind of reimbursement, including cash, free or discounted products, coupons, gift certificates, conference/event admission or any kind of payment. Do this at the top of your post or before any links. If you did not get the product for free but are using your own affiliate links, you MUST disclose as well!

Use proper hashtags to disclose on social media. I use “#ad” for posts and social media as it’s short and easy to plug into any outlet. You can put on your post, “I received this product for a review, but all opinions are my own,” for products you’ve gotten without payment. Remember to disclose if you received free product, EVEN if you are just raving about them another time. It’s confusing, but the best advice I’ve ever heard is, “When in doubt, disclose.”

Finally, always choose “no follow” for your links, affiliate or otherwise. If the brand refuses to accept that guideline, walk away. This are just part of the list of what you need to do to href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/sponsored-posts-and-product-reviews-what-you-need-to-know-to-your-blog-legal/" target="_blank">prevent your blog from getting sued. For products you already own and received no compensation for, you can skip this – unless you’d like to disclose that you’ve received nothing in exchange for the post.

id="attachment_1217" style="width: 710px" class="wp-caption aligncenter">class="border wp-image-1217 size-full" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/sponsorshipverbiage-e1401298306975.jpg" alt="Sponsored post verbiage for top of post" width="700" height="279" />class="wp-caption-text">Example of sponsorship mentioned before and near product link. Where to Get Products You Like

1. Pitching Brands

It’s perfectly acceptable to pitch brands to review products you like. The smaller the business, the more likely you will score some review products. You may be offered coupons rather than the product to start. Position your pitch with why your audience is a good fit for them, how they will respond to the product and what you will do for them. Pretend you are writing a cover let for a job application!

Remember to include your stats and media kit.

2. Product Review Sites

For newbies, I recommend href="https://www.tomoson.com/">Tomoson, which has lots of campaigns for bloggers with small audiences. Personally, I started out with href="http://blogprwire.com/">BlogPRWire and href="http://www.shespeaks.com/">SheSpeaks. Another great service is href="http://www.sverve.com/">Sverve. You can also try href="http://momselect.com/">MomSelect, href="http://momitforward.com/blogger-network">MomItForward and href="http://www.bloggymoms.com/">Bloggy Moms. One of my early favorite blogger groups is href="http://www.doubledutydivas.com/join-us/" target="_blank">Double Duty Divas, who also run href="http://www.iretreatconference.com/" target="_blank">iRetreat, an annual conference on teaching essentials for influencers.

Once you start to build an audience, you can sign up for places that require higher level page views, like MomCentral, Clever Girls or Social Fabric.

3. Event Invitations

This is where blogger relationships and support groups are going to come in handy.

This spring I attended href="http://ttpm.com/" target="_blank">Time to Play Magazine’s blogger toy event in New York City, where companies present new toy releases and demos while collecting business cards from bloggers. These types of events are typically invitation only, which is why it pays to sign up with a local blogger group, similar to your niche. Two groups I belong to include Philly Social Media Moms and Green Sisterhood. We share events, promotion, opportunities, professional advice and promote each other’s sites.

Underpromise, Overdeliver and Safeguard Yourself

Once a brand has engaged you, follow the guidelines of the review request to the lette. If they request something unethical, turn it down before you start. Reputable, blogger-savvy brands will send you links to their site rather than spammy text links. Promise the basics – for example, 500 word post, sharing on Facebook & Twitter – and then deliver extras, like additional sharing or pinning. Always tag the brand when you are promoting your reviews. Finally, keep track of the dollar value of all products and reimbursement you receive. You will need to report that as income on your taxes.

What Next?

Now, it’s time for you to jump in and get started. Practice on your favorite items and href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/socialmedia-marketing/simple-steps-to-get-ahead-of-your-competition-using-social-media-marketing/">use social media to promote your posts, tagging the brand you’re raving about. Don’t forget to use SEO and tag friends, family and people you’re connected too that you think will be interested in the review as well.

Is There Really Money to be Earned from Blogging?

alt="Is There Really Money to be Earned from Blogging?" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/how-much-money-bloggers-make-500x638_t.jpg" />

When blogging first emerged on the scene, it was purely a means of personal expression. It allowed individuals to publish their personal thoughts, opinions, ideas about a particular topic and share them with readers, if they wanted to. Nobody even remotely thought of making money from blogging.

But things changed.

Today, blogging is a far cry from what it was earlier. The reason why most people blog isn’t to get their thoughts out into the world. Of course, they say this is the reason why they blog, but the real motive lies elsewhere. Blogging is primarily being used as means of earning money. The first thing every new blogger looks for are the various ways they can href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/how-do-i-get-started-making-money-as-a-new-blogger/">earn money from their blog.

Blogging has become an industry. New blogs are being created href="http://news.cnet.com/2100-1025_3-6102935.html">every second (not a typo) and their owners want to make money from them. Now this got me thinking. There must be plenty of people out there who had high hopes from their blogging efforts only to realize that these efforts weren’t paying the returns they hoped for. They must be wondering whether all those “experts” who said you can earn money from blogging were lying through their teeth.

The question they must be asking themselves is “Can you actually make money from blogging?”

The answer is yes and a no. No, that’s not as complicated as it sounds!

Let’s try and understand this answer better.

Answer this question first – Are you really serious about blogging?

Every Tom, Dick and Harry seems to be blogging these days; many people see this activity as a way of earning money quickly, without a lot of effort.

These people are dead wrong.

Blogging involves doing the hard yards. It requires the highest levels of commitment from you that sees you publishing new content on your blog regularly. This isn’t easy. It takes time and lot of hard work.  You really need to be serious about blogging to earn money from it. It’s like a full time job. Are you prepared to do it? Don’t think of it as an easy way of earning money; because if you do, say goodbye to any chance of monetizing your blog.

It Requires a Rare Degree of Patience

The people who usually do not earn money from their blogs are the ones who expect returns in quick time and because this doesn’t happen, they quit. The most successful bloggers consistently produce fresh content and have been doing so for a very long period of time even when they weren’t getting any returns out of it.

But they still kept at it, built their readership and slowly their blog started delivering returns.

When you meet successful bloggers who seemingly are raking it in, what you might fail to see is how they patiently built their blogs and waited for the returns to follow.

Cutting through the Clutter

Your blog will only earn money if it is saying something that other blogs in the niche aren’t. Your content needs to stand out from the crowd and your style must be your own. If you do not present any new ideas on your blog in a way that is markedly different from your competition, why would people come to your blog? Take for e.g. the content marketing niche; it’s packed to the brim with blogs claiming to offer the most worthwhile information on content marketing and its various aspects. If your blog belongs to this niche, it needs to survive against some stiff competition. It can only do so, if it offers information that others aren’t.

If your blog isn’t earning money, take a very close look at it and check if it is saying the same thing that most other sites in your niche are saying. If it is, you’ve got a reason why your blog is not earning money.

Are You Doing Enough To Engage Readers

A blog becomes profitable on if it is able to attract a large amount of readers. That’s a given, but you also need to engage with them on a one-on-one basis to ensure they keep coming back to your site and interacting with its content.

Just having great content is not good enough.

What! Yes, it isn’t.

It’s important you engage with the readers as much as you can. If a reader has commented on our blog posts, answer back. The comment could be appreciation, criticism, doubt or a question. Every comment deserves an answer. Also make sure you share the links to your blog posts across all social networks (make sure you’ve a presence on all the big networks and keep building a list of friends and followers) and personally interact with your network. Forge a personal bond with your target readers. This is what will make them come to your blog again and again; this will help you earn the returns you are looking for.

Don’t Allow Money to Interfere with Content Experience

I am sure you’ve come across plenty of blogs where Ads stare at you from all corners of the page. There are different CTAs vying for your attention and content takes a back seat. Result – rather than going through the content, you decide to close the site.

What the site has lost is not just a reader who might have clicked on those Ads, but also a part of its reputation. The focus of all blogs and your blogging activity must be on content and nothing but content. The Ads and everything else is secondary. This is actually what will help you earn money from your blogging efforts.

When a visitor lands on your blog, it mustn’t scream “I want money from my blog” at them; what it needs to convey is “I want to offer you the best information possible”. This is what works.

The Wrap

To put it simply, you can only earn money from your blog, if you’ve the right attitude. If you’ve dreams of becoming a millionaire in double quick time with your blogging efforts, that’s not going to happen. Blogging is long term stuff. It requires dedication and long term commitment from your side. This is what successful bloggers do and this helps them earn solid revenue from blogging.

  • Do you want ads on your site?
  • What type of ads will you accept?
  • What type of ads will you ban from your site?
  • What percentage of ads versus content do you want?

Be careful, because if site visitors and the search engines see your site as spammy, you will take a ranking hit.

Once you’ve set some guidelines for the types and number of ads you’ll accept, there are many different ways you can start bringing in money as a new blogger.

Making Money from Your Blog

Sell Ads Directly

id="attachment_9457" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption alignright">class="size-medium wp-image-9457" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/banner-ad-300x225.jpg" alt="banner ad" width="300" height="225" />class="wp-caption-text">Photo Credit: href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/96250818@N02/8986187348/">mrcangrejero

Until your site is bringing in a good amount of traffic, advertisers likely won’t be interested in placing an ad on your site. Take the time in the beginning to build your following and you’ll have more success selling ads. Ads can go up on your site in a number of ways.

  • Banner ad
  • Text ad
  • Article as ad
  • Review

When placing an ad on your site is make sure you feel comfortable with the content of that ad or the product the person is selling. Remember that you have a responsibility to your readers to give them the best information possible and that includes only linking to products you would be willing to use yourself.

Also, be upfront that you are placing an ad. If it is in the form of an article or review, add a disclaimer that this is a paid ad. Your readers will appreciate your honestly.

Affiliate Sales

The beauty of affiliate sales is that you don’t even have to create a product to offer on your blog. You can simply sell other people’s products. However, if you offer low quality products or things that your readers will become dissatisfied with, you run the risk of losing those readers for ever and possibly damaging your reputation.

href="http://tom-crawford.com/4-steps-to-a-blockbuster-presell-page/" target="_blank">Tom Crawford, a long-time freelance blogger, has this to say about listing products on your site:

“Never promote a product unless you have personally used it and would be proud to have your name associated with it.”

This is excellent advice. Before you promote something, try it out. Make sure it is worth promoting. If you make this a rule before plugging a product, your readers will appreciate your integrity. You will also be able to offer an honest review that will encourage them to try that item.

href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/how-do-i-get-started-making-money-as-a-new-blogger/attachment/smashwords/" rel="attachment wp-att-9458">class="alignright size-full wp-image-9458" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/smashwords.png" alt="smashwords" width="300" height="144" />Sell Your Own Product

If you aren’t comfortable selling other people’s products, consider creating products of your own to offer. Whether it is a new software that helps business owners, a cooking utensil or a how-to guide, there are many different items you can create and offer on your website.

The most common items are ebooks and instructional videos. These items are based exclusively on your knowledge of your niche area. They go a bit deeper than short blog posts or offer very specialized information. It is easy to get ebooks out via platforms like Amazon Kindle Publishing and SmashWords.

Creating a Membership Based Area

Speaking of specialized information, some blog owners choose to create a separate, membership based area where the best articles or videos are places. Those who are members can access this information. You can entice people to sign up for membership by offering a short excerpt to entice the reader to subscribe.

There are a couple of keys that will help make your membership area more successful:

  • Keep membership fairly reasonable. Think /month instead of /day.
  • Offer quality articles, videos, guest speakers and other events to your members. No one wants to pay for a membership to something that is never updated.
  • Make payments recurring. Use PayPal or another recurring billing model so that membership payments and cancellations are automated. This is a huge time saver.

Coaching

Individualized coaching can add another source of revenue to your blog. Let’s say you are writing a small business blog. There are many people out there who want to start their own business. Offer coaching sessions that will get someone started on this process. Life coaches earn good money.

According to Forbes, about 20% of the 100,000 plus life coaches earn six figure incomes. Your blog can serve as a springboard to a successful coaching career. Coaching usually consists of a monthly package of 30 to 60 minute phone calls with about three or four calls each month. So, for four to eight hours of your time, you could earn around 0.00, depending upon the rate you plan to charge.

Google AdSense

Although you might think we already discussed ads above, AdSense deserves its own mention because so many blogs are paying the bills from AdSense revenue. There are a few things you’ll need to keep in mind with AdSense:

  • Google is strict about their AdSense policies. AdSense makes up about 1/3rd of Google’s revenue, so they aren’t going to put up with you breaking their rules. You will likely lose your AdSense account if you try.
  • No more than three ads per page. This is good for you anyway, because it will keep your site from being too ad heavy.
  • You will need a lot of quality content to draw readers.
  • You will need a lot of readers to make money and those readers will need to view and click on your ads.

Google keeps changing their algorithms and this can impact a site’s traffic and in turn the AdSense revenue. Back in 2012, Google had a huge algorithm rollout with Panda. Some sites that were making thousands a month suddenly saw an almost complete drop in AdSense based revenue. Writers lost their income, were laid off and many lives were impacted negatively by these changes.

Google’s goal was to stop rewarding content that was not quality. It could be argued that some site owners were caught in the crossfire who had quality sites, but once Google has spoke, that is that.

With this in mind, I wouldn’t feel right mentioning AdSense without warning you that income from this source can change drastically overnight. It is best to have several different sources of revenue, or streams of income. That way, if one disappears, you are still making money from your blog.

Product Reviews

class="aligncenter wp-image-9460 size-full" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/streams-of-income.jpg" alt="streams of income" width="750" height="175" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/streams-of-income.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/streams-of-income-300x70.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />
Another way you can make money is by taking on paid product reviews. With a paid review, the company sends you a product to try and sometimes pays you as well. You then give an honest review of the product and post it on your site. A few things you might want to keep in mind should you choose to accept product reviews:

  • Decide upfront if you’ll post negative reviews. How will you handle it if a company pays you to review their product and you hate it? Will you refund a portion of their money? Post a negative review? Have a policy in place ahead of time and it will be an easier decision to make.
  • Be upfront with your readers. Tell them you were paid either in product or product and cash to review the product. It isn’t fair to act like the item is something you went out and tried on your own if you are being paid to review it.
  • Be upfront with the advertiser. Let them know that you will list it as a paid review and what will happen if you don’t like their product.

Streams of Income

As mentioned above, developing multiple streams of income is one of the smartest things you can do as a blogger. If one type of revenue dries up, you’ll have other money trickling in. The ideas above will get you started, but be open to additional ways to make money. A blog can also serve as a platform to launch a speaking career or consultation business.
