How to Choose The Best Premium WordPress Theme for Your Site

When you are starting a blog, choosing the right theme is crucial for your success. During the process, you will likely have to decide between free WordPress themes vs premium WordPress themes. Often users ask us which one is better and what’s our selection process when choosing a premium WordPress theme. In this article, we will cover how to choose the best premium WordPress theme for your site. By the end, you will know exactly what to look for and what you absolutely need to AVOID!

Choosing the best premium WordPress theme

Free WordPress Theme vs Premium WordPress Theme

One of the main reason why a lot of users choose a premium WordPress theme over a free one is because you get guaranteed support.

Free WordPress themes are often built as a passion project, so you are not guaranteed to get support or updates.

On the other hand, when you pay for a premium WordPress theme, you get good documentation, access to support, and regular updates.

Some theme shops even go beyond and offer video tutorials, demo content, and even a free blog setup service.

Aside from that, premium themes are make your website more unique because free themes are being used by everyone.

Having said that, here’s what you need to look for when selecting a premium WordPress theme.

1. Aesthetically Pleasing Modern Design

Modern web design

You will probably be using this theme on your website for quite sometime. You users will become accustomed to it. That’s why you need to choose a theme which is aesthetically pleasing and can be used for a long time without requiring any major changes.

There are certain elements of design that are used by all good designers to create beautiful websites.

  • Good Color Combination

  • Awesome Typography

  • Clean Layout

  • Beautiful Images

Together these elements create a beautiful harmony and consistency that appeals to your users. It not only looks great, but it also helps you achieve your business goals.

Most premium themes come with unlimited color choices and built-in tools to select fonts. You need to make sure that your premium WordPress theme uses better typography out of the box.

Don’t just look at the homepage. Go deeper in the theme demo and explore other sections. For example, if you are building a portfolio site then check theme’s demo for portfolio. If you will be adding testimonials, then checkout how testimonials look in the theme demo.

Make sure that there are plenty of page templates and layouts to use. Examine homepage, single pages, posts, and blog sections to make sure that they all maintain the same design consistency and appeal.

2. Features vs Presentation

Features vs presentation

The main difference between WordPress themes and plugins is that themes handle the presentation part of your website and plugins handle the functionality.

However, the premium WordPress theme market is highly competitive and sometimes theme developers cannot resist the temptation to add more plugin-like functionality into their themes.

Why is this considered bad practice?

When a WordPress theme crosses over into the plugin territory, it becomes difficult to switch themes. For example if a WordPress theme is using a custom post type, then switching to another theme would make those custom post types disappear from the admin menu.

Shortcodes defined by theme would also stop functioning which also makes switching a difficult and time consuming process.

On the other hand, there are WordPress themes which behave exactly like a plugin. Offering functionality needed to create very specific niche websites. For example real estate themes or hotel themes. Some of these themes are really useful, but if you are going to use those themes, then you need to understand that it will be difficult to switch themes later because other themes may not have the similar functionality.

3. Security and Performance

Theme performance

Many WordPress beginners don’t pay much attention to speed and good coding practices when choosing a premium theme.

In the race to win new customers, theme developers can integrate unsafe and quick solutions that can compromise your site’s security. The insane amount of features can cost you speed and performance issues.

Now the problem is that most beginner level users do not have the skills to study code. So how do you know that the code behind a premium theme is of good quality?

First, you need to buy your premium themes from trusted and well reputed WordPress theme shops. Some of the theme shops that we trust and recommend are:

Secondly, look around for reviews and customer testimonials. See who else is using themes developed by that particular theme shop or developer. Are there any big websites or blogs using their themes? Checkout the testimonials page on the theme shop or search for their reviews on Google.

4. Compatibility Check

Before you start browsing for a premium theme, take a few moments to write down all the features you are looking for. For example:

  • Do you need eCommerce support?

  • Translation readiness for non-English websites

  • BuddyPress or bbPress support

  • Any other plugins that you might be using

Many premium themes come with built-in templates and support for popular eCommerce platforms like WooCommerce and Easy Digital Downloads.

If a theme you are looking for is not available in your language, then ask the theme developer to see if a translation is in progress.

Some users may want to use very specific plugins to create niche websites like job boards, question answer websites, etc. Feel free to ask the theme developers if their theme would work with a specific plugin.

You need to make sure that you are investing your money in the right place.

After Selecting the Perfect Premium WordPress Theme

A good premium WordPress theme would help you easily build high quality websites. However, there are still many things you can do to improve your site.

We recommend taking a look at these 24 must have WordPress plugins for all websites.

If you want to further customize your website, then you should look at CSS Hero which makes it easy to customize websites (see our CSS Hero review).

We hope this guide helped you choose the best premium WordPress theme for your site. You may also want to see our comparison of the best WordPress contact form plugins.

More themes can be found in the top one and top two sites. Woo Themes made up for it by making a very nice offer. If you cannot choose one theme from their collections, you can have all the themes for only 5. That may not be practical for some— especially because not all the themes you will get are good— but others would surely dive in head first to make the deal.

4 Ways to Improve the Mobile Version of Your WordPress Theme

alt="4 Ways to Improve the Mobile Version of Your WordPress Theme" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0514-1-500x254_c.jpg" />

class="alignright size-full wp-image-932 border" alt="Mobile Version WordPress" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/0427-1.jpg" width="300" height="450" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/0427-1.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/0427-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />

Let’s face the truth, mobile devices are getting more and more popular. Desktop browsing is not growing anymore,  it’s decreasing actually, while mobile is growing fast with all those awesome smart phones and tables out there.

According to Net MarketShare, mobile devices represent 10% of the total web traffic. It’s a big figure, and it’s even bigger in some niches and countries. But the important thing here is the special attention that mobile devices require, because of the limited screen space and the fact that mobile connections are usually slower than desktop connection.

A lot of WordPress themes are responsive but you know, we’ll always have room for improvements. So here we’ll see 4 technologies and ways to use them in order to improve the mobile experience for your users.

#1 Ol’ Media Types

A few years back, when IE5.5 and IE6 were considered alive, mobile browsers were just starting to popping out (and Opera was by far the best one), and people started to realize that things were just breaking since phones back then just couldn’t process simple things like CSS (not to mention JS, flash and so on).

So, doing a completely separated mobile site was the only option when the media types came to save us. The idea was simple, you could tell the browser if the file that you are providing is “advanced” CSS rules (for desktops) or simple CSS rules (for handheld or print). The syntax is as simple as this:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="handheld.css" type="text/css" media="handheld" />

This can be a good option to create a completely different design for your mobile site. But you just shouldn’t use it.

Media types may sound good at first but a simple problem came with modern smart phones: the lack of browser support. Most major players out there were just ignoring this kind of functionality (like apple)
Then media queries come to save us.

#2 Media Queries and how to really improve mobile experience

This is by far the most popular way to create a mobile version of your site.

You can target certain points based on a rage of browser size, device screen size, pixel density (yeah, retina!), and even media types.

Here is a simple media query:

@media (max-width: 700px) {
body { background: red; }
}

This is pretty much the same as programming. IF “browser width is 700 or lower”, THEN “apply the following CSS code”.

Child Theme

Let’s create a new folder in your /themes and name it twentyMobile. I know, twenty twelve already uses media queries, but we’re here to learn, aren’t we?

So, create a style.css file and add this content:

/*
Theme Name: mobile theme
Template: twentytwelve
*/
@import url(“../twentytwelve/style.css”);

@media handheld, only screen and (max-width: 767px){
nav ul { display: none;}
nav select {display:block}
}

Above we created the child theme CSS and also we’ve added a rule that will target only mobile devices, that will hide the main menu and show a select. So if you have a menu in a select you could save a lot of space instead of displaying it as ul / li items

#3 Extreme makeover with jQuery Mobile

jQuery mobile is an awesome framework that uses jQuery functionality to improve mobile experience, with optimized widgets and UI elements.

The HTML needed o make it work is quite simple, it just uses the HTML data attributes to and JS to detect and create UI widgets.

But in order to make the jQuery Mobile work properly in your WordPress blog you’ll need to call the jQuery mobile script first. Getting back to our child theme, duplicate main theme’s header.php file and add these lines in the head tag:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="http://code.jquery.com/mobile/1.3.1/jquery.mobile-1.3.1.min.css" />
<script src="http://code.jquery.com/mobile/1.3.1/jquery.mobile-1.3.1.min.js"></script>

I should mention that for commercial proposes you should use wp_enqueue _script, so you’ll avoid duplicating libraries in your site.
Now we can play around with pretty much any UI element you want. jQuery mobile has a lot of UI widgets that you can use in a theme, but let’s apply the page and collapsible panels.
This is the basic HTML syntax:

<div data-role=“page”>
<div data-role=“header”></div>
<div data-role=“content”></div>
<div data-role=“footer”></div>
</div>

With this code you’ll create a new “page” and the header, content and footer areas. The header and footer are fixed, and the content will change based on current page, so you can load multiple pages once and just hide them by assigning different IDs.
This is the basic HTML for collapsible panels:

<div data-role=“collapsible-set”>
<div data-role=“collapsible-set” data-collapsed=“true”>
<p>Collapsible area content</p>
</div>
</div>

It’s quite simple to implement a loop there, isn’t it? Well, your code will look like this:

<div data-role="collapsible-set">
<? while ( have_posts() ){
...
?>
<div data-role="collapsible" data-collapsed="true"></div>

<?
...
}
?>
</div>

The select menu revised

With the code we’ve seen above (in the media queries section) you could hide your usual menu and show a special select menu. jQuery allows you to add it without much PHP code (to be honest we won’t need PHP at all). Let’s create a new file and add this code there:

jQuery(function($){
    //when the DOM is ready
    $(document).ready(function(){
        // let’s create the select element
        $("<select />").appendTo("nav");
        //With the new option, go to…
            $("<option/>", {
                "value" : "",
                "text" : "Go to…"
            }).appendTo("nav select");
    });

    //Now we have the select created let’s populate it:
    $("nav .menu a").each(function(){
        // for each LINK you find in the menu
        var aux = $(this);
        $("<option />",
        {
            "value" : aux.attr("href"),
            "html" : aux.text();
        }).appendTo("nav select"); // append a new item to the select
    )};

    //then we set the dropdown functionality to redirect when we select a new item
    $("nav select").change(function(){
        window.location = $(this).find("option: selected").val();
    });

});

Doing this will create a new mobile menu, BUT the problem is, we’re loading jquery mobile even in the “normal” version of the site. That’s why we can use also a few plugins to help us improving our site.

#4 – Wrapping everything up with Mobile Detector

This awesome plugin creates a new functionality that allows us to conditionally load themes depending on user device. And it works with simple conditional rules, like this:

<?php
if(MobileDTS::is(‘android’)){
....
} elseif(MobileDTS::is(‘mobile’)){
....
} else {
}
?>

The MobileDTS method checks current device then returns a simple true / false. Then we can use a magic function called switch_theme( ) to set a new theme, and you can use plugin conditionals like MobileDTS::is_switcher_enabled() to create a link to a desktop version when using mobile, for instance.

Conclusion

So, have you ever used mobile plugins or functions in your WordPress theme? Which method do you prefer? Don’t be shy and share your thoughts!

Icon Set Details

This month we are featuring another 35 flat icons (sorry, I just can’t get enough of minimalist design!) on blog-related theme. Brands covered include Facebook, Android, RSS logo, Google+, Twitter, etc; items covered include modem, keyboard, lock, price tag, and bunch of other computer gadgets. Sized at 512x512px in .png and .ai (vector) format, these icons would be extremely handy for those who are working on blog theme or infographic design.

As usual, the icon set is totally free for both commercial and non-commercial use – provided that you credit WHSR as the original creator of the set and link back to this page (yes, you can nofollow the link as per Google’s rule).
