What’s New in WordPress 4.6

WordPress 4.6 was released just a few minutes ago. It is the second major release of the year 2016, and brings some exciting new improvements and fixes several bugs. In this article, we will show you what’s new in WordPress 4.6 and which features you should try after updating your websites.

What's new in WordPress 4.6 (Features and Screenshots)
4.6 is a major WordPress release, and unless you are on a managed WordPress hosting service, you will have to manually initiate the update.

Important: Don’t forget to create a complete WordPress backup before starting the update.

Native System Fonts in WordPress 4.6

WordPress started using Open Sans from Google Fonts project, as the default font so that the admin interface looks the same on different platforms and devices. However, this meant a tiny compromise on speed and relying on a third party project.

Since 4.6, WordPress will now use your native system font for the admin area. This will make WordPress load faster and feel like your native device and platform.

Here is a screenshot of admin area in Safari web browser on macOS using system font San Francisco.

Native system fonts in WordPress 4.6

This change only affects user interface elements inside WordPress admin area. It will not affect content areas like post editor which uses your theme’s editor stylesheet for fonts.

Shiny Updates for Plugins & Themes

Previously, when you installed a plugin or theme from WordPress.org, it showed you a progress screen. This added a page load and increased the time spent on installing plugins and themes.

WordPress 4.6 makes it faster to install and update your WordPress plugins and themes without leaving a page.

Themes will also be using these faster updates. This animation shows how the new theme update process looks like in WordPress 4.6.

Editor Enhancements in WordPress 4.6

Each new version of WordPress brings improvements and new features to the post editor. WordPress 4.6 introduces some cool new enhancements to the edit screen.

Highlighting Broken Links in Visual Editor

Sometimes users end up adding a broken link or improper URL in a post. If you publish the post, then that misspelled link goes live too.

Since 4.6, WordPress will now attempt to check for broken or poorly formatted links when you are using the Visual Editor. If a link is broken, then it will highlight the linked anchor text with red dots, showing the link URL in red.

Better Auto-Save and Recovery

WordPress 4.6 comes with a better disaster recovery mode for the auto-save feature in the post editor. Previously, when users disabled revisions, it affected restoring drafts from browser cache and autosave feature.

This issue is now fixed and users will be able to easily restore posts from browser backups and autosave.

A Better Looking Import Screen

WordPress makes it super easy to import content from Blogger, Tumblr, and several other platforms using the Importer plugins located at Tools » Import page.

WordPress 4.6 makes the import screen more readable and accessible.

It also uses shiny updates to install importer plugins in the background. This means no more popup to install importer plugin and no extra page load to show you the progress.

Localization and Translation Improvements

Translations from WordPress.org hosted community translations will now be given preference over the translations included with the plugin.

The jQuery UI date picker is now displayed with proper locale.

Declension of comment numbers, and months in different languages are now properly handled.

Under The Hood Improvements

WordPress 4.6 also brings lots of new improvements for developers. Here are some of those under the hood improvements.

Resource Hints

Resource hints is a new W3C specification, which allows browser to connect and prefetch resources to improve performance. (#34292)

Improved Meta Registration

WordPress 4.6 introduces register_meta() function for the registration of meta keys. It works like register_post_type() function and allows developers to use a standard way to work with metadata. (#35658)

Persistent Comment Cache

WordPress 4.6 allows comments to be cached as a persistent object type. This means comment cache is properly validated and updated when there are changes. (#37613)

WP_Post_Type Class

WordPress 4.6 introduces the new WP_Post_Type class. It changes $wp_post_types to an array of WP_Post_Type objects. This provides methods to handle post type supports, rewrite rules, meta boxes, hooks, and taxonomies. (#36217)

WP_Term_Query Class

The new WP_Term_Query class in WordPress 4.6 provides a better structure for generating term queries. (#35381)

What’s Coming in WordPress 4.6 (Features and Screenshots)

The beta version of WordPress 4.6 has been released. We followed the development closely and excited to report that the final version is expected to be released around August 16, 2016. In this article, we will highlight what’s coming in WordPress 4.6 with features and screenshots.

What's coming in WordPress 4.6

Note: You can try out the beta version on your computer or on a staging environment by using the WordPress Beta Tester plugin.

This is the beta release, which means no more new features will be added until the final release of WordPress 4.6. However, some of the features in beta may not make it into the final release.

Shiny Updates in WordPress 4.6

When users installed a new plugin or theme, or updated one, they usually saw a progress screen. This progress screen added one more page load and was a bit distracting.

WordPress 4.6 will introduce shiny updates. Users will now be able to update and install plugins and themes without being redirected to the progress screen.

Shiny updates in WordPress 4.6

Native System Fonts in WordPress Admin Area

WordPress started using Open Sans font in WordPress admin area to offer a consistent look across different devices and platforms. However, this meant that WordPress to rely on an external third party source. This also increased page load times of admin area, and affected speed.

With WordPress 4.6, the admin area will revert back to using the system fonts. This means that your WordPress admin area may look slightly different on different platforms.

Here is a screenshot of admin area in Safari web browser on macOS using system font San Francisco.

Native System Fonts

These are the system fonts that will be used in WordPress admin area on different platforms and environments.

  • apple-system for Safari and Firefox on macOS and iOS

  • Helvetica Neue on macOS prior to 10.11

  • BlinkMacSystemFont for Google Chrome on macOS

  • Segoe UI for Windows

  • Roboto for Android and Chrome OS

  • Oxygen-Sans for KDE

  • Ubuntu for Ubuntu

  • Cantarell for GNOME

  • sans-serif, the standard fallback

Note: This change only affects the UI elements of WordPress admin area. It will not content areas like post editor which uses your theme’s editor stylesheet for fonts.

Editor Improvements in 4.6

Most WordPress users spend more time on post editor than any other admin screen on their site. Improving post editing experience always takes priority in new WordPress releases.

Improved Auto Save Feature

WordPress 4.6 brings improvements to autosave feature in WordPress. Previously, when users disabled revisions, it also affected restoring posts from autosave feature.

WordPress 4.6 will fix this issue and users can restore WordPress posts from browser backups and autosave even when they have revisions disabled.

Highlighting Broken Links

If you are using the visual editor to write posts, then adding a broken URL will be highlighted.

As soon as you add a link, WordPress will check if the link is valid. If you take the cursor to the linked text, then you will see the link in red color instead of the usual blue.

Broken links will be highlighted in WordPress 4.6

Under The Hood Improvements

These updates improve significant parts of WordPress core but are mainly intended for developers.

Standardized Metadata Registration

WordPress 4.6 brings register_meta() function for the registration of meta keys. This function works like register_post_type() function. It allows plugins and theme developers to use a standardized way to work with meta data stored with posts, users, comment, or terms object types. (#35658)

New WP_Post_Type Class

WordPress 4.6 will introduce the new WP_Post_Type class. It changes $wp_post_types to an array of WP_Post_Type objects. This provides methods to handle post type supports, rewrite rules, meta boxes, hooks, and taxonomies. (#36217)

New WP_Term_Query Class

Similar to WP_Query, WP_User_Query, and WP_Comment_Query classes, WP_Term_Query in WordPress 4.6 will provide a better structure for generating term queries. (#35381)

WP_Site_Query and WP_Network_Query Classes

For WordPress multisite networks, the new WP_Site_Query and WP_Network_Query classes allow querying sites and networks with lazy loading. (#35791, #32504)

What’s Coming in WordPress 4.7 (Features and Screenshots)

The beta version of WordPress 4.7 arrived last week. We have been following the development closely, and we are excited to report that final version is expected to be released around December 6th, 2016. In this article, we will highlight what’s coming in WordPress 4.7 with features and screenshots.

What's coming in WordPress 4.7

Note: You can try out the beta version on your computer or on a staging environment by using the WordPress Beta Tester plugin.

This is the beta release, which means no more new features will be added until the final release of WordPress 4.7. However, some of the features in beta may not make it into the final release.

New Default Theme – Twenty Seventeen

Twenty Seventeen

WordPress 4.7 will be the last major release of 2016. As is the tradition, it will come with a new default theme for the next year.

Twenty Seventeen is slightly different than previous default themes. Its main focus is on business websites rather than blogs, and it even comes with starter content to help new users setup their WordPress websites. Currently the starter content feature is available for new sites only, but by the time the theme is released, it is expected to be available for sites with existing content as well.

It can also be used as a blog theme. Twenty Seventeen has large featured images, crisp typography, and a mobile-first approach to design.

Video Headers Support

Video header support

Many premium WordPress themes are already allowing users to add video headers. Twenty Seventeen will be the first default theme to come with video header support.

You can upload and use your own videos in mp4 format, or you can also use YouTube and Vimeo videos by simply entering the video URL.

If your theme doesn’t support video headers, here is how you can easily add YouTube video as fullscreen background in WordPress without any coding.

Theme Setup Flow

New theme and site setup flow in Customizer

WordPress 4.7 will bring an improved theme and site setup flow. In the customizer, you will now see a more polished view of your installed themes, better theme search, and improved setup directly from theme customizer.

Custom CSS in Live Preview

Custom CSS in WordPress 4.7

Want to add custom CSS to your theme? Now you can do that directly from the theme customizer. However, your custom CSS will be specific to the theme you are previewing.

If you often change themes or don’t want your custom CSS limited to a theme, then you can see our guide on how to easily add custom CSS in WordPress.

Admin Language Control for Users

Admin language control for users

Currently when you install WordPress in other languages, all users see the admin interface in the same language.

WordPress 4.7 will allow users to switch the admin language from their user profile, so each user can choose the language they prefer. You will still need to install the languages before users can switch them.

Thumbnail Previews for PDF Files

PDF Thumbnails in Media modal

Currently, if you upload a PDF file, then WordPress only shows the file icon. You can add previews using PDF plugins for WordPress.

WordPress 4.7, will show thumbnail preview of the first page in your PDF document when you upload it to the media library. WordPress will also display thumbnail previews on a PDF file’s attachment page.

Editor Enhancements

Editor changed in WordPress 4.7

The post editor is where most site owners spend most of their time creating content. Each WordPress version brings enhancements and features to the post editor.

WordPress 4.7 will make some subtle but important changes to the editor. The paragraph and heading selector menu will now appear in the top bar. The underline button has been removed, and the strikethrough and horizontal line buttons are moved to the kitchen sink bar.

Users will also be able to see keyboard shortcuts in tooltips and drop down menus.

Under The Hood Improvements

These updates improve significant parts of the WordPress core but are mainly intended for developers.

Custom Bulk Actions

Custom bulk actions

Developers will now be able to add their own custom bulk actions to list tables on different admin screens like posts, comments, users, etc. (#16031)

Post Type Templates

Similar to custom page templates, Post Type Templates will allow theme developers to add the ability to choose templates for different post types. (#18375)

Rest API Content Endpoints

Rest API Endpoints will make their way into WordPress 4.7. (#38373)

Locale Switching

If the content of your website is displayed in a different locale than the one set in admin area, then WordPress will show the toolbar in the language of the content page. (#26511)

We hope this article helped you learn what’s coming in WordPress 4.7. Let us know which features you find exciting and what you would like to see in future releases of WordPress in the comments below.

What’s New on WHSR: Marching into Spring

alt="What’s New on WHSR: Marching into Spring" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/calendar-500x413_c.jpg" />

The weather is beginning to warm up around much of the world. Birds return to areas they fled over the winter and flowers begin to bloom. At WHSR, traffic has taken and uptick with more and more people recognizing Jerry Low and the site’s writers as a voice of authority in all things web hosting. March is a month of new beginnings and WHSR has a lot of new material for you to look at, learn from and with which to improve your own websites.

New Web Host Review & User Feedbacks

One thing that was the same in March was that WHSR took a look at web hosting companies, the pros and cons and offered some valuable details to help you decide if these companies are right for you. One hosting company we looked at was AltusHost. Our href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-review/altushost-review/">AltusHost Review takes an in-depth look at this Netherlands based hosting company, including their growth patterns over the last six years. The review is further broken down into the different types of hosting plans the company offers (Shared, VPS, Dedicated). AltusHost is an interesting company because of some of the cutting edge server technology they are using, which is detailed in this piece.

style="text-align: center;">class="size-full wp-image-8900 aligncenter" alt="altushost" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/altushost.jpg" width="750" height="380" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/altushost.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/altushost-300x152.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

As always, we share honest, non-biased information in our reviews, so we also share the cons of AltusHost that you need to be aware of to make an informed decision.

Because we try to keep you with up-to-date, reliable information about the different web hosts out there, we also recently published an href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/hosting-updates-news/little-oak-hosting-user-review/">update on Little Oaks Hosting. Previously, Jerry Low’s research showed that this was a reliable option in hosting. However, during the second week of March, the company experienced some serious issues that impacted customers. Jerry updates everyone on what happened and how to view Little Oaks going forward. If this is a host you are currently with or are considering switching to, it would be wise to go ahead and read this hard-hitting piece.

Winter is still hanging on and much of our readership has felt the cold temperatures. The polar vortex has caused record lows across much of the United States map and some areas have seen record snowfall. Still, even with the extreme weather, February has been a productive month around WHSR. Jerry Low, WHSR’s founder, started the month with a Chinese New Year Celebration while I spent a long weekend in Nashville, Tennessee celebrating my 24th wedding anniversary with my husband and some close friends. Amidst all the celebrating, WHSR published some truly helpful guides for our readers.

Modern SEO Strategies: What I’ve Learned and What’s Changed

alt="Modern SEO Strategies: What I’ve Learned and What’s Changed" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/bigstock-Web-Seo-Chart-On-Blackboard-28208462-500x375_c.jpg" />

Two years ago, I spoke at a conference to talk about search engine optimization techniques and strategies. I had been blogging for 10 years, and was a web designer for even longer, so I knew something about how to get a great position in the search engines.

That workshop had been valuable from as far back as early 2000 until recently, but the influx of social media, hashtags, influencers and Google changes have made some of those early tips null and void. Some are just as important though.

Here’s what I’ve learned about how to approach SEO in 2014.

Change #1: Don’t Miss Using Google’s Keyword Tool

class="alignright size-full wp-image-10788" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/google-keyword-tool.jpg" alt="google keyword tool" width="300" height="239" />

The Google AdWords Keyword Tool has been gone for about a year now (replaced with the new href="https://adwords.google.com/KeywordPlanner" target="_blank">Google Keyword Planner).

Many bloggers, myself included, relied heavily on this tool; however, I think our reliance was misguided. The keyword tool only measured what people were willing to pay for and was really created for products. It was specifically created to work with AdWords and while the hack that most of us used it for was fine, its data was probably not as relevant as we believed – at least, for those of us more interested in organic search results who didn’t use AdWords. In retrospect, I now feel freed from hours of pouring over results that may or may not have had a beneficial return on the time I invested. There are better ways to find out optimal keywords than these keyword tools.

Modern SEO Strategy #1: Go To The Source for Answers

You should be using href="http://www.google.com/analytics/" target="_blank">Google Analytics and href="https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home?hl=en" target="_blank">Webmaster Tools, and going to the source for SEO information. Instead of wondering what’s new, good or outdated, simply start following and watching href="http://www.seoinhouse.com/matt-cutts-videos/" target="_blank">Matt Cut’s Google Videos, which are organized by topic at SEO In House, to answer your questions.

If you installed Analytics a while ago, make sure you are href="https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/upgrade/guide" target="_blank">upgraded to Universal Analytics and have the new code pasted into your site. Really dig in and examine your analytics. Click your blog under “Webmaster Tools,” go to Search Traffic, select Search Queries and download the table. I advise importing it into Excel, so you can sort it. It will give you the real story of how people are getting to your site.

Change #2: Google is Smarter than You Think

class="alignright wp-image-10727 size-full" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/090414WebmasterTools.jpg" alt="webmaster tools" width="300" height="437" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/090414WebmasterTools.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/090414WebmasterTools-205x300.jpg 205w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />

Some years back, I had a small business client who spent a ton of money engaging an SEO firm. They researched a 3-word phrase and then created a page where they repeated that phrase in a document – ad nauseam. No human would read that page. At the time, that kind of SEO was technically acceptable. Personally, bending and shaping words to match the exact 3-5 word phrase I believed people to be searching for has always been a painful exercise for this wordsmith.

How could I put my name on something like that and still build my reputation as a writer? Turns out, you can’t.

Thankfully, Google can handle whatever you write. It’s smart enough that you can place the group of words in the same or near order and still get the juice for your keyword phrase without being redundant. You do have to be careful as your long tail grows, but my best advice is just to write the best you can. You will find that from time to time, you are writing articles with no other way to say a word. For example, I just completed a piece on grass fed vs. conventionally raised cattle. There’s no other way to say either of those terms accurately, so they were repeated throughout the article. Good for my SEO, but not necessary every time.

Modern SEO Strategy #2: Use Your Head When Writing

It’s time for all of us to go back to Journalism 101 and write or href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/web-business-ideas/content-curation-to-drive-traffic/" target="_blank">curate valuable content for our audience.

If you have a new blog, don’t write too much until you start to build readership and connect with the leaders in your niche. Headlines and descriptions should entice or scare people into clicking. Articles should give provide readers with something they need and engage them, even if there is a call to action in it that benefits you. Write from top down, with all the good information up front. After you’ve done all that, then you can go back and think about SEO.  Odds are, you will be right on target.

Change #3: Community and Uniqueness Are Important to Keyword Discovery

class="alignright wp-image-10726 size-full" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/090414-positioning.jpg" alt="Google results" width="300" height="550" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/090414-positioning.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/090414-positioning-163x300.jpg 163w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />

This has more to do with finding your accurate target rather than search engine placement, but it’s the smart way to narrow your competition. This is where sources outside of your blog come in to play, and one of the reasons why you need to be active in your niche or all the niches you cover.

Here’s an example. I write for a natural blog, Mamavation.com. One of the topics we covered this summer was how to do an armpit cleanse – that is, how to safely switch from commercial underarm deodorants to an organic brand or homemade. It turns out that no one had written much on this topic, which is a burning question in the organic community.

The article I wrote got noticed by someone at Mercola.com, a site heavily frequented by this community, and went viral. Today, my article is #1 at Google for the phrase “armpit cleanse,” my image comes up first under “Images,” and a pin for this article is result #5. They key was creating a solution to a common question in this niche and making it the keyword phrase, so that bigger names would find it, link it and share.

Modern SEO Strategy #3: Community is Key For Better SEO

Going viral will help your SEO strategy, and that means knowing your community, what they want and what they don’t know.

Listen to what this community is talking or debating about, see what’s new, find the controversies and always be on the lookout for unanswered questions. If you have a lifestyle blog that covers several topics, do this process for each section. This will help you know what keywords your target is searching.

Change #4: Discard URL Name, Duplicate Text, Page Rank and Other Outdated Tools

Once upon a time there was a list of things you could do to ensure your site positioned well in search results.

We all used to obsessively check page rank, carefully repost text, repeat keywords, over-examine our meta tags and labor over URL names. None of these techniques were inherently bad but they made for poor writing and inappropriate priorities.

For example, URL name is not as important to Google as it once was thanks to link farms and other abusers. Title tags are great for separation and logically placing a keyword, but don’t necessarily carry extra weight anymore. Repeating words all over your blog is not the healthiest way to get search engine traffic either. However, it is important to write meta descriptions and page names that are memorable, concise and attractive, so that when your page comes up in search engines, people will want to click it and can remember the name.

Modern SEO Strategy #4: Think of SEO as a Whole

We all got off track when we starting thinking of SEO as a list of tasks, when what we should have doing is organically growing our blogs to the right community, writing the best we can, and promoting our work for a larger percentage of our working time to key players. Research and credit your links, use bullets,href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/graphics-is-not-my-thing-part-2-editing/" target="_blank"> create pinnable images, tag others, be honest and use your voice. Combining all those things will not only spike your search engine engine placement, it will also build your brand, target your content and draw your audience from a variety of venues.

SEO Strategies that Last

This modern approach to SEO will hold up over time. It’s time we stopped thinking about SEO as a “to do” list and started thinking about it as an organic result of all our marketing efforts.
