alt="Top 10 Resources Every Blogger Needs" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/4-e1372566132805-500x253_c.jpg" />

Like any worthwhile endeavor, bloggers need to continually educate themselves to stay up-to-date at their craft. You need to have reliable resources in your blogger’s toolkit that you can turn to for advice, tips and tutorials. The following books and web sites can keep you at the top of your game building a successful blog and may even lead towards a fulfilling and profitable business along with it.

Books Every Blogger Should Read

Here are the top 5 books every blogger should own.

Book #1. “Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income” by Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett

class="alignright size-full wp-image-7280" alt="ProBlogger" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/ProBlogger.jpg" width="106" height="160" />
This book by Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett is what I call the encyclopedia of blogging.

It contains everything you need to know, from blog set up basics, to building a “sticky” community of loyal followers, to going beyond your blog and building a business or career from it.  Examples from Rowse and Garrett’s real life blogs and websites are peppered throughout, so you are getting hands-on, practical lessons. There’s even a section on flipping your blog, so this book is a keeper that you will refer to again and again.

Book #2. “Content Rules” by Ann Handley and C.C. Chapman

class="alignright size-full wp-image-7281" alt="Content Rules" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/ContentRules.jpg" width="107" height="160" />
Ann Handley and C.C. Chapman have created the complete guide to content for businesses. Why should you use it? Even if your blog doesn’t become your business or bootstrap your career, this book can teach you a great deal about creating content that appeals, goes viral, and sells. The book is separated into 3 parts: why content rules, how to make yours rule and successful case studies. “Content Rules” starts by helping you get grounded in why you need compelling content, continues by showing you how yours can stand out from the crowd and ends with a checklist covering all the material in the book.

Book #3. “Online Reputation Management for Dummies” by Lori Randall Stradman

class="alignright size-full wp-image-7282" alt="Online Reputation Management" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/OnlineRepMgmt.jpg" width="129" height="160" />
Don’t let the title put you off – as a Dummies book ambassador, I can tell you that these guides are well-written and take you from start to finish in everything you need to know. This Dummies title covers social media in depth. Why am I recommending this particular book by Lori Randall Stradman, rather than one with social media in the title? Because this one addresses your entire online presence, including protecting your reputation and how to fix things if you get into trouble – for example, you are smeared by some of your followers. Real world examples from big business failures guide you in fixing your blog-sized problems competently and professionally. In addition, Stradman gives you soup to nuts information on everything you need to know about using social media and building an online presence, including tips and tools to make it flow smoothly.

Book #4. “Digging into WordPress” by Chris Coyier & Jeff Star

If you are using a self-hosted blog with WordPress, this book is the ultimate guide. (If you’re not self-hosted, href="//localhost/blog/web-hosting-guides/the-dangers-of-free-web-hosting">here’s why free web hosting is not the best option.) This book is designed to take a blogger who has never even heard of WordPress from beginner to expert. Yes, you will learn techy things in this book but all of it is in service to running a better, more user-friendly blog – such as working with your RSS feeds, optimizing how your comments are set up, search engine optimization and managing plugins – just to name a few chapters. Plus it’s all written in clear, easy language and has a supporting website as well.

The paper version is pricy, but at , the PDF is far more useful – you’re going to be online when you go through the steps in this book anyway.

It’s an easy, clear read with lots of examples. It guides you through all the functions on your digital or DSLR camera, and walks you through the basics and more advanced configurations of lighting, framing, color correction and more. If you have launched or are looking to launch a website, then odds are that you know you will need hosting. Think of it like a house – the website itself is the house’s structure, but you need a place to put it; hosting is like the lot.

As you begin shopping for Web hosting, you will find hundreds of companies, each with their own promises, guarantees, and options. It’s a web that can quickly become confusing – even to someone who has previously secured hosting for a website. A hosting scenario in which you lease an entire server, rather than sharing the space with other organizations

12. Dedicated IP address

In general, most organizations are fine with a standard IP address, however, if your site deals with particularly sensitive / secure information – or if you have a need to access files and your site via FTP, you may need a dedicated IP address.

13. DNS

Domain name system – translates Internet domain names and host names to IP addresses

14. Domain name

The domain name is how people will find your site – it’s the URL. Make your domain name simple and intuitive – for example, if your business is “Bob’s Pets,” your best domain name would be style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: medium;">www.bobspets.com. Don’t deviate from your business name whenever possible – doing so will only hurt your chances of securing business.

This service is provided by numerous domain name registrars. As the site owner, you would purchase privacy from the domain registrar who in turn would replace your info in the WHOIS with information for a forwarding service to main your privacy and anonymity.

16. Domain registrar

This refers to the entity registering your domain. When you register your domain, you will go through the process of registering your domain name / URL to associate it with your IP address. Doing so ensures that you own your site and are the only one able to access your domain. The actual domain registrar is an entity that has the access and accreditation to register domain names, including the extension, such as .com, .net, .us, etc.

17. Drupal

18. Ecommerce cart

This refers to the amount of time that a server has been up and running. Most often, this number is given in percentage form (ie; 98% uptime). This number is a good point of reference when shopping for Web hosting, as it lets you know the likelihood of your site and information being consistently live. For example, if a potential provider has 82% uptime, you may want to look elsewhere as their servers have significant downtime – and if the servers are down, so is your site

26. ICANN

ICANN stands for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. This organization coordinates the unique identifiers assigned to each computer across the globe so that each can communicate with the others; this coordination enables the internet to function. It also administers the allocation of Internet naming resources and certain responsibilities related to DNS management.

27. IP address

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7491" alt="ip address" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/ip-address.jpg" width="750" height="300" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/ip-address.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/ip-address-300x120.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

A customer service feature that allows you to reach company customer service over the Internet on-demand. Most frequently, this service is via typed chat

30. Malware

Harmful software that aims to damage or disable your computer, website, or network

31. Money back guarantee

A guarantee from the hosting company that if you are not satisfied with their service, they will return your funds (and stop service)

32. Mysql

style="text-align: center;">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7494 border" alt="mySQL" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/mysql.jpg" width="750" height="486" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/mysql.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/mysql-300x194.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

34. One click installation

Often times, software and hosting services require complex installation and set-up processes. One click installation means that installation should be easy and can be done by the user with the click of a button

35. Overselling

Selling more of a good or service than the organization can actually deliver. In Web hosting, this often means selling hosted space to more customers than the provider could actually host if each customer were to use all of their allocated space. For example, if a hosting company sells to 12 customers assuming that they will only use 80 percent of their space and bandwidth – even though it could not deliver if those same 12 customers used 100 percent, that provider would be overselling. In truth, the likelihood of all customers using all available or purchased assets is very slim, so Web hosting overselling typically has very few repercussions

36. osCommerce

An e-commerce and store management software program that can be installed on any Web server that runs MySQL or PHP. This software is available for free under the GNU General Public License

37. Reseller hosting

A type of hosting in which another organization (the reseller) purchases hosting services in bulk, then resells them in smaller pieces to organizations in need of hosting. The reseller makes a profit for providing the service, but at times, customers can secure better pricing than they could if they were to purchase hosting individually

38. Shared hosting

class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-4848" alt="What Is Shared Hosting?" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/shared-hosting-750x324.jpg" width="750" height="324" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/shared-hosting-750x324.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/shared-hosting-300x129.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/shared-hosting.jpg 762w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

Ideal for smaller companies or startups that need hosting, but do not have the funds or need to host a high amount of data. In this hosting scenario, the organization leases server space from a server which it shares with other organizations. This can work out, but may come with bad hosting neighbours (see reference in list)

39. Simplescripts

An add-on service that complements blog sites, such as WordPress. The service provides one click installations and upgrades for blog sites, forums, photo galleries, and more to make installation and data transfer – not to mention website management – easy and convenient

40. Service level agreement (SLA)

A written agreement with a hosting provider or other organization that establishes the terms of the agreement, such as length of service, delivery schedule, specific scope, etc.

41. Site backup

The process of backing up your site to ensure that your data is safe and maintained in case of system failure or cyber attack. Some, but not all, hosting companies include back-up services as part of their hosting provisions

42. SSL certificate

Protects your website against malware, hackers, and cybertheft. SSL certificates are a good idea for any website, but particularly critical for ecommerce sites and any site that requires visitors to enter personal information

43. Top level domain (tld)

The Internet has a hierarchal domain name system which places some domains at a higher priority than others. There are several types of TLDs

44. Trial period

Some hosting companies provide a free trial which does allow you to better understand their services. However, hosting typically requires set-up and configuration, so moving your site if you choose not to stick with the service following the trial may cause site downtime or other growing pains

45. Unlimited hosting

A term that is intended to imply that the hosting fees cover unlimited data, disk usage, etc. However, this term is a misnomer as there are always limits to hosting; if there weren’t, hosting companies would lose money, not to mention run out of space

46. VPS hosting

class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-4847" alt="What Is VPS Hosting" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/vps-hosting-750x324.jpg" width="750" height="324" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/vps-hosting-750x324.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/vps-hosting-300x129.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/vps-hosting.jpg 762w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

A form of hosting that provides the purchasing organization with a virtual private server (VPS). The VPS runs its own operating system which grants the customer superuser-level access so they can install the software of their choice, provided it runs on the matching OS

47. Web hosting

There are numerous hosting organizations out there – they essentially house your site, bringing it live to the Web and providing security and data storage services

48. Web server

This typically refers to hardware that helps to deliver content to the Web. Servers host information about websites, games, data, and more.

49. WordPress

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7487" alt="wordpress" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/wordpress.jpg" width="750" height="348" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/wordpress.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/wordpress-300x139.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

A free blogging and website building tool that uses a content management system (CMS) and is based on PHP and MySQL. There are countless plug-ins available so that users can customize their sites and run various add-on programs and utilities

50. Zen cart

A PHP-based online store management system that uses a MySQL database and HTML components. Previously united with OSCommerce, Zen Cart split in 2003 and is, like OSCommerce, available for free under the GNU General Public License

It is a myth that you must post on your blog every day for it to be successful. Sites like href="http://zenhabits.net" target="_blank">Zen Habits and href="http://www.easygreenmom.com/" target="_blank">Easy Green Mom post an average of twice a week, yet have a strong following of readers. According to href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Zen-Habits/112127185466170" target="_blank">Zen Habits’ Facebook page, the blog has 240,000 subscribers. They have over 24,000 likes on Facebook. Easy Green Mom has over 8,000 likes on their href="https://www.facebook.com/easygreenmom" target="_blank">Facebook page.

On the other hand, href="http://weblogs.about.com/od/startingablog/qt/BlogPostingFreq.htm" target="_blank">About Guide Susan Gunelius, CEO of a marketing communications company, believes that posting frequently is key to keeping your readers. She uses the example of a newspaper and how people won’t read it or subscribe if the articles don’t change frequently. The truth is like most things, and probably somewhere in the middle between driving yourself insane trying to keep up with frequent posts and not updating your site often enough to keep readers interested.

However, while it might not be necessary to post every day to find success on your blog, there are many reasons why you might want to post every day. Perhaps you are taking part in the href="http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/" target="_blank">A to Z Blog Challenge and need to come up with 26 fabulous ideas for the month. Maybe you have set a personal goal to provide your readers with one post every day this month. Maybe you are planning a href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/free-advertising-through-online-blog-tours/" target="_blank">guest blogging tour that lasts 30 days and you need to come up with 30 different blog posts. Whatever the reason, there are some things you can do that will help you come up with fresh ideas regularly.

Writing prompts give you a simple idea that you can build on and grow into a unique post for your site. You will find ideas for daily writing prompts at:

  • href="https://dailypost.wordpress.com/category/daily-prompts/" target="_blank">Daily Post – For example, one of the prompts was about your favorite way to spend a Saturday night. Does that spark any ideas for you?
  • href="http://www.no2pen.com/blog/2012/12/bright-blog-post-ideas-for-every-day-of-the-year/" target="_blank">No 2 Pen – This blog offers 365 days worth of writing ideas. The posts are broken down by month and include diamonds like looking at the weather in your area and around the world and how that is impacting your business industry.
  • href="http://www.daily-writing-prompt.com/" target="_blank">Daily Writing Prompt – This site is devoted completely to offering different types of writing prompts. You’ll find prompts for journaling, fiction, holidays, by calendar month and so much more.

Join a Blogging Event

I mentioned the A to Z Blogging Challenge above. There are many such blogging events that you can join, which can help you stay focused and even give you ideas on things to write about. For example, if you are on the letter A, you might choose to write about “A-List Clients and How to Keep Them”. Even a small tool like a letter of the alphabet can jog your thought processes and help you come up with a fresh idea. Here are some other events for bloggers.

  • href="http://ultimateblogchallenge.com/" target="_blank">Ultimate Blog Challenge – This event is held once each quarter and encourages participants to blog for 30 days during a single month that quarter. Join in January, April, July and October.
  • href="http://www.conversiondiary.com/2014/02/7-posts-7-days.html" target="_blank">7 Posts in 7 Days – Join other bloggers in this challenge that runs seven days at a time. Bloggers can follow each others new posts.
  • href="http://suitcaseentrepreneur.com/blogchallenge/blog-challenge-day1/" target="_blank">Suitcase Entrepreneur 30-Day Blog Challenge – This challenge encourages you to write specific things for 30 days, but more importantly it has your explore things like why you started your blog, who you want to reach with your words and to look at long-term goals.

None of these quite what you’re looking for? You can also href="https://dailypost.wordpress.com/submit-blogging-event/" target="_blank">create your own blogging event and invite other bloggers to join you.

Poll Your Readers

Your readers come to your blog because you offer a niche topic they are interested in. Find out what you haven’t covered that they want to know more about by creating a poll and having site visitors answer that. If you want more in-depth information, you could do a survey instead.

  • href="https://www.surveymonkey.com/mp/online-polls/" target="_blank">Survey Monkey – Create simple polls or complex surveys and invite your readers to take part. Survey Monkey offers both free and paid options, depending upon how specific you need your poll to be.
  • href="https://www.easypolls.net/" target="_blank">Easy Polls – Create a simple questionnaire, get an embed code and place it where you want on your website.
  • href="http://polldaddy.com" target="_blank">Poll Daddy – This site offers three different packages, including a free basic package to get you started. You can ask 19 different types of questions, from multiple choice to fill in the blank to gain the specific feedback you need.
  • href="http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-polls/" target="_blank">WP Polls – If you run a WordPress blog on your own website, you can install WP Polls and conduct simple polls from your own blog.

Pay Attention to Comments

Do you allow comments on your site? If so, then pay attention to what readers are discussing. Often, you can come up with a topic based on questions the readers have or information they’ve added to an article.

Another advantage of creating a post based on a comment left on your site is that you can quote from that comment and credit the poster with the quote. Quotes can highlight information and offer readers a break from reading unbroken lines of text.

Don’t overlook your site visitors. Many have a lot of useful information to offer or intelligent questions that can spur ideas for new posts.

Jerry Low, WHSR’s founder and web guru, recommends href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/how-to-write-great-content-per-week-consistently/" target="_blank">keeping a good reference list of blogs that are related to your industry. He also recommends following Google+ profiles of experts in your area. He also recommends that when you come across an interesting title, save it, even if you don’t have time to read it right then. Occasionally, a title itself will spark an idea for you. If you use Evernote, then href="http://evernote.com/webclipper/" target="_blank">Evernote Web Clipper is a good tool to use for clipping articles and saving them for future reference. If you read print magazines, you can pull out pages and put them in a folder to sift through when you need an idea or two.

Keep a Journal

Many writers swear by Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, myself included. This book teaches creatives how to refill the creative well so that ideas will flow more easily. While there are dozens of ideas in the book that could be discussed, there simply isn’t room to talk about them all in this article. However, the one thing from Cameron’s book that I’ve found most useful over the years for avoiding writer’s block is to keep a journal.

Cameron’s method is simple. Journal three pages every day, handwritten, no more and no less. Do not stop and fix grammar or worry about what to write. Let the words flow until you have written three pages. In fact, if you get blocked and don’t know what to write, then simply write “I don’t know what to write” over and over until the three pages are filled or an idea comes to you.

This type of free writing, Cameron claims, helps to rid your mind of stress and distractions and free it to come up with ideas instead. Try it. I have found it really works, but you do have to be consistent and write the pages every day.

Refill Your Creative Well

Speaking of Cameron, she and many other experts on writer’s block, insist that when you are blocked and can’t come up with ideas or perhaps with words to write, that you are empty. In “href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/10-ways-to-overcome-writers-block-when-blogging/" target="_blank">10 Ways to Overcome Writer’s Block When Blogging“, I talk about some specific things you can do that will put info and art into your empty well and help you come up with some fresh ideas. Here are a few additional ideas:

  • Go to the park and swing on the swings like when you were a kid.
  • Go to the coffee shop and sip on your favorite brew while watching those around you and observing your surroundings.
  • Visit an art museum and take the time to really study the paintings.
  • Do an art you don’t normally do, such as finger painting or throwing clay.
  • Attend a class on something you’ve never tried before, like pottery, cooking or anything else that is creative.

Trending Topics

Follow trending topics on Google or Twitter. These can sometimes spark an idea. For example, let’s say your blog is about pet rocks. You pull up trending topics and see that one topic that is trending is “life expectancy in pets”. Perfect. You now have an idea to write a blog post about how pet rocks are superior to dogs and cats because pet rocks don’t die and break your heart.

Title Prompts

href="http://www.business2community.com/communications/writing-headlines-sell-actionable-tips-headline-samples-0742822" target="_blank">Writing Headlines that Sell is an article that offers some specific title ideas that can help you drive traffic to your site, capture reader interest and pull better SEO results. For example, here are some starts for titles that can help spur an idea:

  • How-to __________
  • Get the Latest Version of _________
  • Get Rid of ___________
  • Top 10 Ways to _________
  • Review of ________
  • What ________ Experts Say About ________
  • Beginner’s Guide to _________

Keep an Idea File

Most writers have more ideas than they’ll ever be able to use. It’s a funny thing about ideas, though, that if you don’t use them they disappear never to be regained. Don’t let those good ideas slip away from you. Get in the habit of immediately jotting down any ideas that come your way. Here are some different ways you can get those ideas down, some more creative than others.

  • Call your voice mail and leave yourself a message
  • Keep a small notebook and pen in your purse or pocket
  • Send an email to yourself with the idea
  • Have an Excel file with your ideas
  • Carry index cards around with you, jot ideas on them, and keep the cards in a recipe box (this one is my favorite)
  • Write the idea on your hand and transfer it when you get home
  • Send yourself a text message (be careful not to accidentally delete)
  • If you have iPhone 4s or later, tell Siri to “take dictation”. She will open up a new note and you can speak into your phone and she will type it out for you. This is great for those times when you are driving and can’t write an actual note.

It doesn’t matter what method you use. What matters is that you write those ideas down. If you get in the habit of this, it’s very unlikely that you’ll ever find yourself at a loss about what to write.

Write in Bulk

If you find yourself struggling to come up with daily posts because of the time factor more than finding enough ideas, keep in mind that you can spend a weekend day or one day a week and write six solid posts for the next week. The beauty of blogging platforms like WordPress is that you can schedule posts ahead.

This method doesn’t work for everyone. Some find that writing six posts in a single day is too draining. You can also break it down and write three posts on Monday and three more on Wednesday.

Set a Personal Goal and You’ll Achieve It

Writing a post every day can be challenging even for the most prolific of writers. However, if you set a goal to write a post a day, you’re much more likely to come up with the ideas you need. It might seem like a daunting task at first. It also seems that everyone has a solution for coming up with ideas. However, the truth is that different things work for different writers. While visiting an art museum might spur my creativity, going for a job might spur yours. Get to know yourself as a writer and what works to spark the best ideas and you’ll never be lacking in a good topic for your blog again.

Wouldn’t life be simple if all one had to do was write up a quick post and schedule it to go live? Ask any blogger you know and he or she will tell you that blogging is about so much more than just the writing part of the job.

Instead, you have to juggle a lot of different plates at once to truly build a noteworthy blog that readers will want to return to time and again.

It’s important to write the best content possible, href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/blogging-tips/how-to-magnetize-your-blog-and-build-your-readership/" target="_blank">magnetize your blog to draw readers to it, promote your blog and keep them coming back for more.

Somewhere between all that, you have to make sure you’re href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/web-copy-writing/keep-your-readers-interested-with-hooks-and-hangers/" target="_blank">keeping readers engaged while reading your work and plug in a few Call to Action phrases.

If you’re exhausted just thinking about it all, this simple road map will guide you through the steps you need to take to have a successful blog. The starting point is the first thing you write. The finish line is marketing and community engagement.

Writing Your Blog

You might think it is obvious that the first step to a success blog is to write that blog. However, there are some very specific things you’ll want to keep in mind as you work up posts for your niche topic.

  • Write an engaging headline that will grab readers. This is the first thing your reader sees, so it is vital that it grabs her and makes her want to read your work. Our very own Jerry Low wrote an article titled href="http://www.business2community.com/communications/writing-headlines-sell-actionable-tips-headline-samples-0742822" target="_blank">Writing Headlines that Sell: Actionable Tips and Headline Samples, where he says, “Believe it or not, an effective headline can make or break an entire piece.”
  • Write a skimmable article. Readers want something they can digest quickly. href="http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?doid=1835449.1835513" target="_blank">Microsoft Research estimates that website visitors make a snap decision in the first 10 seconds of visiting about whether they want to stay or leave. Use headings, subheadings and bullet points to keep your text readable.
  • Keep it short and sweet. People are busy. The average person works, has a family, spends time with friends and has other hobbies and interests. They need information that can be read in a matter of minutes.

Edits

Ahh, the dreaded “E” word. Edits are not fun for anyway and if you aren’t a professional writer by trade, you may worry that you’ll be able to make a difference in your written word. However, edits are important if you want to put out a professional looking blog.

Since Google now ranks on the quality of content, you do want to present your best work possible. Either edit the articles yourself or hire a professional editor to polish them up for you.

  • Let the article sit for at least a day or two. You’ll be able to go back and read it with fresh eyes and catch errors you might not have seen before.
  • Read out loud. Reading your written word out loud will help you hear any awkward phrasing and to find missing words or repeated words.
  • Do a spell check. It sounds simple and basic, but this is a step that many writers forget but one that can polish your work up quickly and help you find typos.

Promotion

One of the most important parts of blogging is marketing. If you only write posts for your blog but never get the word out that the posts are available, then you likely won’t have many site visitors.

Social Media Marketing

Social Media Marketing (SMM) is one of the least expensive ways to get the word out about your blog and what you have to offer. If you aren’t already active on sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ and Twitter, then you should set up pages for your business and start talking to others.

  • Add family and friends to your friends lists. The best way to get word of mouth going is through those you already know. Ask family and friends to like/join your new page and share it with others.
  • style="text-align: left;">Promote your site on the best days and times. You can learn which days are best to promote by reading our article titled href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/socialmedia-marketing/a-survey-of-smm-and-what-days-are-good-days-to-market/" target="_blank">A Survey of SMM and What Days Are Good Days to Market.
  • Don’t spam your readers. No one wants a constant barrage of sales pitches. Offer useful tips, share funny quotes, post a picture of an event.
  • Utilize HootSuite to schedule posts ahead. If Tuesday is the best day to promote, you may wonder how you’ll ever find time in the middle of the week to do social media marketing. There is no need to worry. You can use HootSuite and schedule your promotional posts ahead of time.

Email Marketing

One of the most powerful tools you can develop as a blogger is your personal mailing list. When a visitor comes to your site, you should have a Call to Action that encourages him to sign up for your newsletter or emails.

  • Send out a regular newsletter or email. A few times a week is a good goal, but at least once or twice a month.
  • Make it easy for users to sign up. Use MailChimp or Constant Contact. Both offer a two-step verification process to make sure anyone who subscribes really wants to be on your list.
  • Offer value to your readers. You have to make your visitors want to subscribe to your news. Offer a free ebook download for signing up. Send coupons only subscribers have access to. Provide articles that are exclusive to your newsletter.

Sweepstakes and Events Marketing

Offering contests and fun online events can help draw traffic to your site. Keep these details in mind:

  • Be careful of href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/socialmedia-marketing/7-surefire-ways-to-have-a-successful-social-media-sweepstakes-campaign/" target="_blank">laws regarding lotteries. There are several elements that make a contest a lottery. You’ll want to be sure to have a requirement to enter, such as having entrants answer a question correctly. You also can’t benefit monetarily. So, don’t trade an entry for a newsletter subscription for example.
  • Hold a webinar. You are an expert in your topic. Hold a webinar or teleseminar on a specific topic in your area of expertise and invite people to register. Collect their info when they register and invite them to sign up for your newsletter for updates on future events.
  • Poll your visitors to find out what they most want and need. Business owners have used polls for many years to figure out what their customers want and need. Poll your site visitors to find out what events they’d like to see on your blog.

Community Engagement

Your final step in the process is to engage your readers. There are several ways of keeping readers engaged and making them feel part of a wider community.

  • Turn on your comments. Some blog owners choose to turn off comments, because it is time consuming to moderate them. While this is not a bad idea, especially if you get a lot of spam comments, try to engage your readers in conversation on at least some of your posts. Ask for their thoughts and interact with them.
  • Set up a chat room. Is there a hot topic on your blog that everyone seems to be commenting on and sharing? Schedule and online chat and invite your readers to attend. Ask an expert to come speak on the topic (or do it yourself). Offer classes on a set day and time.
  • Get people talking on Facebook and Twitter. Utilize private events and hashtags to engage others.

Repeat, Repeat, Repeat

If you never write another blog post outside of the ones already on your site, you still need to repeat the steps after the writing portion of this road map, over and over and over.

Every three to six months, you should review posts on your site and figure out what needs edited, updated, removed, or replaces.

You’ll also want to continue to promote your articles. Go back to old articles and reference them here and there.

Engage others in discussion on these topics. Repeat what you’ve done in the past with both old and new posts.

I’m certainly not advocating never writing another post. You need fresh content on your site to keep people reading and visiting your blog.

However, the steps after writing are equally important and shouldn’t be ignored if you want to have a successful visitor base.
