10 Ways to Get Pinterest Followers Fast and Drive More Traffic to Your Site

alt="10 Ways to Get Pinterest Followers Fast and Drive More Traffic to Your Site" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0529-2-500x256_c.jpg" />

style="text-align: center;">class="border aligncenter" src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2012/0621-11.jpg" alt="Pinterest Homepage" width="750" />

As the popularity of visually based social networks grows, one question comes up again and again. “I know that these sites are really popular, but what’s the best way to engage and get a return on investment for my time?”

Every entrepreneur and marketer considering investing time in these sites, including the exponentially growing Pinterest, need to make sure that their content strategy is href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/socialmedia-marketing/10-essential-rules-for-effective-pinterest-marketing-in-2015/" target="_blank">optimized to get the best returns, which include high engagement on the platform itself as well as derivative benefits like website traffic and an SEO bump.

Here are ten strategies that will help you achieve these goals fast.

1. Connect your existing accounts and list Pinterest where appropriate

One of the biggest mistakes people new to Pinterest make is not connecting their Pinterest account with their other existing social media accounts.  If your Twitter, Facebook, and email contacts are on Pinterest, follow them.  There’s a high probability that they will follow you back.  Likewise, if you link your accounts together and your networks see when you pin new content via venues like Facebook, they are more likely to engage with you through follows, repins, and comments.

2. Add a Pinterest Button to your content

It’s standard practice now to have a variety of share buttons on key content you produce, from important pages on your site to every blog post you write.  Does your site feature a Pinterest button yet?  How about your blog posts? Make sure that your set of social share buttons includes a Pinterest button. Some of the most common share modules currently don’t. Then when you’re creating content, consider whether the presentation can be more visually friendly (can you include a high quality image?) to make it more likely to be pinned.

3. Participate (Pin) regularly

Many users find Pinterest to have a naturally high degree of engagement.  But one of the key factors is active use.  It’s important to be on the site, pinning regularly.  Every day, make an effort to pin between five and thirty pieces of content as you go about your content development, web browsing, etc.  The nature of Pinterest is such that you don’t need to sit down and have a Pinterest Power Session.  Use the integrated pin button in your browser to share interesting images, videos, and infographics on topics related to your boards as you go about your day.  Consistency is key.

4. Engage: Follow other pinners, repin, comment, like, etc.

Here’s where the social aspect comes in.  When you first start using Pinterest, it might not be completely obvious that there is a hierarchy of engagement for users on the site.  The highest acknowledgement is to follow another pinner – you will see and follow the full body of their work.  You can repin images that you like, like images that appeal to you, and leave a comment if they inspire you to do so.  Think about the kinds of engagement you’re hoping to get from Pinterest, and then dive in by leading the way by modeling that engagement yourself.

5. Put keywords in your board names and pin descriptions

On Pinterest, SEO is very important.

People use the search feature of Pinterest like a big search engine, and input keywords to identify content and other pinners with shared interests.

Let’s assume that you’re in the bridal business, and you maintain a variety of boards.  Perhaps one of your boards is comprised of images of bridal veils, a collection of over 100 items that you sell on your website.  If you named your board “Hip Bridal Veils for 2012” people can find it; if you called it “Halos for Brides” it’s going to be harder to identify.  If each of those one hundred images includes a description with things like the name and model info and specific details like lace veil, veil with pearls, Cathedral veil, etc, this will increase the chances that people interested in your content will find your materials.

6. Content Part I – How you choose your images

The first aspect of figuring out your content strategy for a site like Pinterest is figuring out what aspect of your business is most appropriate to convey through imagery.

In some instances, your business which might be product based, and so the choices are obvious.  If you sell fishing rods, your boards could feature everything from images of rods and lures to dream fishing destinations, cute gone fishing signs, and more.  If you sell a service, like for example you operate a yoga studio, you will need to be more creative.  You might feature athletes performing specific poses, you might feature quotes, or you might feature images that evoke feelings of relaxation, meditation, etc.  The key is to find the visual angle that works with your content.

7. Content Part II – Connect content choices to Pinterest community

class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-1534" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/info-1-750x708.jpg" alt="Pinterest Infographic" width="750" height="708" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/info-1-750x708.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/info-1-300x283.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/info-1.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

Estimates put the user base of Pinterest at anywhere between 70 and 97% female.

Home décor, bridal inspiration, DIY crafting, fashion, and inspirational quotes are among the content that dominate the site.

Once you’ve taken the first step of determining what aspect of your business or subject will most effectively present visually, you must also determine what will connect best with this audience.  Sometimes it will be items itself; other times it will be how you market them.  In the fishing example above, you might focus on destinations and call the board “Great fishing destinations and family getaways” or the board of rods might be “Best fishing rods for Father’s Day 2012.”

8. Consider clustering your boards via niche accounts

You can learn a lot about people and the diversity of their interests by looking at the boards they promote.  My own boards range from Alaska to the sport of rodeo to a collection of infographics explaining social media.  But what if you’re on Pinterest representing a business or trying to effectively market? If you market hair products to women but then also have boards that focus on guns and hunting, customers may be unwilling to engage because your message from a marketing perspective isn’t clear.  Consider clustering related boards and themes into accounts, and maintaining multiple accounts if your interests are diverse.  It can be a bit more work administratively, but it can be a smart strategy when you’re trying to reach very different customer bases.

9. Include your URL in your photo (strategically) and post photos from your site

When you pin a photo, where you pin that photo to will be referenced as the source.

Whenever possible, pin photos from your own website. Consider using subtle watermarks on photos for additional branding.  You can also list the URL in the description wherever appropriate.  This helps drive traffic to your site, creates links with SEO value, and also helps build recognition for your brand.

10. Invest in followers (selectively)

Just to address the loaded question – should you ever buy followers?  It depends on your goals.  But the bottom line is that bought followers are unlikely to be actual human beings that are interested in your content and willing to engage with your brand in real life.  I’d encourage you to focus on tactics 1 – 9, as they will yield faster and more valuable results in your Pinterest efforts.

How to Sell More by Promoting Less

alt="How to Sell More by Promoting Less" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/default-image-500x308_c.jpg" />

Running a business is challenging, especially if you feel uncomfortable with self-promotion. You need to complete sales in order for your business to survive, but the idea of going to yet another networking event leaves you feeling ill rather than invigorated. In-person events and other sales tactics are important, and it’s impossible to avoid them completely if you want your business to succeed.

If you’re one of the many people who shudder a the thought of self-promotion, however, here are some tips to help you sell more while promoting less.

Use social media

class="border" src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2012/0514-5.jpg" />

Social media is a gift for introverts and people who might feel uncomfortable with self-promotion. While networking events are important, social media allows you to make connections with clients and collaborators from your computer. You have time to think when responding to messages, and can interact with others without having to push yourself too far outside your comfort zone.

In the screenshot above, we can see different businesses and professionals using Twitter for different purposes. href="http://www.fastcompany.com/" target="_blank"> Fast Company use the social media site to disseminate their articles, href="http://cathypresland.com/" target="_blank"> Cathy Presland is using it to encourage people to share her work, href="http://realbeautyis.com/" target="_blank"> Lori Fields is promoting other people’s Twitter accounts to encourage her followers to follow them too, and href="http://rachelwcole.com/" target="_blank"> Rachel W. Cole is using Twitter to spread word of her latest promotion.

Build key relationships

Whether you do it through social media, through networking events or through any other method, building key relationships with other people in your field or related fields can help reduce the amount of selling you have to do yourself. By making strategic contacts, you potentially create a network of people who will sell for you. When building contacts online, create a list of three or four people you want to get to know first. Start reading and commenting on their blog, support them online by sharing and re-tweeting their links, take their courses or buy their products, and, most importantly, contact them to introduce yourself. You don’t have to explicitly sell to these people, rather think of them as allies, who could prove useful in the future.

href="http://chrisguillebeau.com/" target="_blank"> Chris Guillebeau has over 74,000 followers. While he might share some of href="http://livepage.apple.com/" target="_blank"> Danielle LaPorte’s 29,000 followers, he is exposing Danielle’s work to more than twice as many people as she can currently access. By fostering a relationship with Chris, a key figure in a related professional field, Danielle has exposed her work to tens of thousands more people in a single tweet.

class="border" src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2012/0514-6.jpg" />

Identify your clients

Somewhere, there are a group of potential clients who want to buy from you – they just don’t realize it yet. Identifying your ideal client will help you tailor your promotional efforts to the people who are most likely to transition from readers or followers to buyers. If you can describe your ideal buyer, you’re more likely to produce content tailored for them, and therefore more likely to get sales. You might be able to convince people who don’t fit the description of your target client to purchase your product or service. This, however, will take more persuasion, and more persuasion means more marketing. Stick to the people who already want to buy from you, and keep your promotional efforts efficient and rewarding.

id="floatright">src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2012/0514-7.jpg" />

href="http://www.goddessguidebook.com/" target="_blank"> “Goddess” Leonie Dawson runs a popular women’s website and, with this product, tapped into an issue that affects many women. By creating a product that many of her readership already wanted, she immediately cut down the amount of hard selling she wold have to do to promote the product.

She further identified her ideal client for this particular product by identifying specific physical symptoms this client might have (anxiety, indigestion, etc.), plus goals and aspirations they would like to achieve in the future (shed extra weight).

Using this kind of copy, her target audience might read the section below, feel understood, see a solution to their problems, and already be halfway, if not committed, to buying.

Provide value

If the idea of writing a promotional email or blog post sends a shiver down your spine, try shifting the focus of the content. Prioritize helping your readers over selling to them, and create writing that offers value. Whether you’re answering common client questions or tackling a problem that affects your client base, creating content that provides value will engender your readers’ trust, making them more likely to make the step from reader to client in the future. If you don’t have a blog, or don’t feel comfortable writing, consider running an event. This could be a free webinar, a physical group meeting, or similar. If it’s informative to customers, you’ll have an opportunity to let them know about your latest product or service without having to sell.

class="border" src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2012/0514-8.jpg" />

href="http://www.lauraroeder.com/"> Laura Roeder is a social media expert, who charges for her services and courses, but frequently holds free webinars that provide helpful tips to listeners. These webinars serve a double purpose: they provide potential clients and customers with actionable tips that they can use to grow their business online, while giving her audience a taste of what it would be like to work with her in a professional capacity.

Let other people do the talking for you

Testimonials from previous clients are just as valuable as adverts and sales pages, if not more so. If you’re releasing a new product or service, provide a certain number of people with a free version in return for a testimonial. Testimonials can help show potential buyers that other people have had similar problems or issues, and that your product or service has helped. Potential buyers expect you to rave about your business, however if the praise comes from a third party, it adds more credibility to the product or service you’re selling.

Online marketing maven href="http://www.daniellelaporte.com/" target="_blank"> Danielle La Porte has a section on her website called “Rave Reviews”, which is dedicated to client testimonials. As well as including a list of 16 reviews from prominent online entrepreneurs, she has posted a separate list of reviews specifically about her new book. Not only does Danielle let the reviews do the selling for her, but she advertises her products and services down the right-hand side toolbar, so as readers scan the positive reviews, they also see her products beside them.

class="border" src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2012/0514-9.jpg" />

Another way to build your reputation is to offer customer service that exceeds expectations. Ask clients for feedback, send them offers, and stay in touch. When customers feel cared for, they’re far more likely to recommend your business to other people, and your word-of-mouth reputation is paramount.

Offer a good deal

id="floatright">src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2012/0514-10.jpg" />

When you present potential clients with a product or service that offers amazing value, the deal will do most of the selling for you. When buyers can see that something that offers unbelievable value, they’re already moving towards a sale. Good value isn’t about under-pricing items or services, it’s about offering a deal that is hard to refuse.

A key part of this deal that makes purchasing a product a no-brainer decision for consumers is security. Providing a money-back guarantee demonstrates that you have confidence in the quality of your product, and it decreases the amount of risk the client is undertaking. Even if you’re not a natural copywriter, presenting your goods in a way that removes as many objections on the part of the customer as possible will help raise your sales, no promotion involved.

When href="http://chrisguillebeau.com/" target="_blank"> Chris Guillebeau launched his book, ‘The 0 Startup’, his goal was to sell 10,000 copies in pre-sales alone. To do this, he incentivized people to buy more than one book at a time by offering bonus products as a reward. For a limited time, you could pre-order three books at once, and get a free online class; pre-order 10, and you would get two online classes, plus one of Chris’ existing products. Chris offered incentive packages for up to 1,000 books, and while his readers might not have bought three, 10, 50, or 100 books on their own, the additional goodies thrown in with the book packages made the extra investment worthwhile.

5 Ways to Get More Retweets

alt="5 Ways to Get More Retweets" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/twitter-stats-500x352_c.jpg" />

The World Wide Web is all atwitter over “tweeting”, and your business can gain free exposure by getting in on the action. You’ve probably heard Twitter referenced over and over in magazines, on television shows and online. Celebrities often gain attention for inappropriate or controversial tweets. While it wouldn’t be a good idea for your business to become too controversial, as you’ll alienate some of your clientele, you can use Twitter in a way that will drive customers to your site and cause others to retweet your posts on their own Twitter feeds.

In title="Science Of Retweet" href="http://danzarrella.com/the-science-of-retweets-report.html" target="_blank">The Science of Retweets by Dan Zarrella, he took a random sample of tweets and tracked them to figure out why people retweet. He got some interesting results.

I found that in a random sample of normal (non-ReTweet) Tweets, 18.96% contained a link, whereas 3 times that many ReTweets (56.69%) included a link.

This means that not only are ReTweets an accepted way to spread off-Twitter content, the presence of a link may increase a Tweet’s chances of being shared.

Twitter Statistics

style="text-align: center;">href="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/twitter-stats.jpg">class=" wp-image-1022 aligncenter" alt="Twitter Statistics" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/twitter-stats.jpg" width="750" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/twitter-stats.jpg 975w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/twitter-stats-300x211.jpg 300w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/twitter-stats-750x529.jpg 750w" sizes="(max-width: 975px) 100vw, 975px" />

According to title="Twitter Stats" href="http://www.statisticbrain.com/twitter-statistics" target="_blank">Statistic Brain, there are 554,750,000 active registered users on Twitter as of April 19, 2013. This means that your potential reach is in the 100s of millions. Of course, not all of those people will retweet your post, but if you craft it the right way, you are certain to get at least a few retweets. Other statistics listed by Statistic Brain include:

  • 135,000 new users sign up each day
  • 58 million new tweets per day
  • 9,100 tweets per second (on average)

In addition to these statistics, get in on a hot topic, like the election campaign, awards ceremonies or other big event and the number of overall tweets (and thus retweets) rises drastically. For example, href="http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/25/tech/social-media/oscar-tweets-2013" target="_blank">CNN Tech indicated that during the 2013 Oscars, there were 6.8 million tweets that went out. During the big moment when the Best Picture (Argo) was announced, as many as 85,300 tweets per minute were being shared. During the 2013 Super Bowl, a href="http://bigstory.ap.org/article/live-action-twitter-grabs-super-bowl-spotlight" target="_blank">record number of tweets was recorded with a total of 24.1 million during the game.

This information is good to have, because if you can work a tweet into a big event that also helps promote your business via a link, then you have the opportunity for retweets. Let’s start by looking at what others have already successfully created that has been retweeted. Some of the most popular retweets of the last three years were:

  • Rihanna tweeted that Justin Bieber flashed his abs at her and it was retweeted over and over by teen fans everywhere. Take note if you have a product or service targeted at the younger crowd. Boy singers are hot, including One Direction, and if you have a valid tweet you can get retweets.
  • Someone with the username “al-Qaida” posted that they weren’t about to share their location and weren’t going to fall for that trick. Because it was funny, the post was retweeted multiple times and went viral. If you can approach your tweet with some tongue-in-cheek humor that is also timely, you will likely get retweets.
  • Anything from the hottest celebrities of the day. Justin Bieber often takes over the top 10 most retweeted posts, but other celebrities get their share of the attention, too.
  • The highest grossing retweet of 2012 was posts about the results of the election and an announcement from Barack Obama that stated simply “four more years”. As a business, you probably shouldn’t take political sides, but you can certainly figure out a way to get in on the most popular topics and get a possible retweet.

Twitter does offer one tool that may help you out as you figure out what is currently trending on Twitter. They now list the top tweeted hashtags on their home page. So, if you see that #springcleaning is trending, then you could create a post related to spring cleaning products at your store and how to use them.

Creating a Tweet

Sure, anyone with a Twitter account can type out a few words and post them up on Twitter, but not all tweets are created equal. As you put together your first tweet with the intent of going viral with twitters, you’ll need to know a few specifics about Twitter posting when you want that post to go at least a little bit viral.

Keep It Short

Twitter’s dynamic is different than Facebook or Pinterest. Tweeters are looking for quick, fast reads. According to a href="https://blog.twitter.com/2010/evolving-ecosystem" target="_blank">Twitter blog post in 2010, about 62% of Twitter users at that time were accessing the site via mobile devices. That number is likely to rise and more and more people acquire smart phones and tablet devices. These people are looking for a fast read, so keep it short and to the point. Twitter limits tweets to 140 characters per tweet anyway, but within those characters, you’ll also want to add a request to retweet.

Ask for the Retweet

One of the easiest ways to get people to retweet your post is simply to ask your followers to retweet. You can do this in shorthand, so you don’t use up all your characters asking for the retweet. At the end of your tweet, simply type something like “please rt”.

Make It Interesting

The tweets that get retweeted are either profound, funny or interesting. Take the time to brainstorm what you want to tweet. Run the idea past some of your employees or other managers. Refine it, perfect it, and then put it out there and see what happens. Remember that every interesting tweet doesn’t get retweeted, but you’ll have a better chance of it being retweeted if it is unique.

Get More Retweets

1. Automate Things

If you make regular tweets, then the chances of gaining followers and them retweeting rises sequentially. Luckily, you can automate this process and schedule tweets through href="http://hootsuite.com/features/social-networks" target="_blank">HootSuite.

2. Measure Your Success

Measuring retweets, or at least the success of a tweet in gaining retweets, can help you repeat successful posts that go viral. There are a couple of ways you can track tweets and how many times they are retweeted.

First, go to your home timeline. From here, you can see under the tweet how many of your followers have retweeted the post. You can also view retweets from “Connect” in the top navigation bar. Then, click on “Interactions”. This will show you what interactions you’ve had with other Twitter users, including retweets.

3. Shorten URLs

If you include a URL in your tweet, be sure to shorten that URL. There are several popular services that are effective at shortening URLs, including:

  • Bit.ly
  • T.co
  • TinyURL

4. Use Popular Words

In addition to studying why people retweet, Dan Zarella took a look at some of the most popular words in the most retweeted posts. He found that some of the more popular words included short words and phrases, such as:

  • Please retweet
  • Blog
  • Free
  • Help
  • 10

There were also some words that he found were extremely unpopular, such as:

  • Game
  • LOL
  • Bed
  • Bored
  • Work

5. Get Engaged in the Twitter Community

Whether you spend time engaging on your own or you hire a social media manager to do so for you, get involved in “discussions” about topics that might draw people in the field you are in. If you are a web designer, then you might get involved in a chat about the possibility of the government taxing Internet sales. Use the hashtag others are using. For example, they might use #internet tax.

The final tip that Zarrella offers that can help your posts get retweeted is that Friday is a high volume day on Twitter. This is the day that overall the most posts and retweets occur. If you only have time to post once a week, make sure it is on Friday. Keep your posts interesting, offer unique content, ask for retweets, use popular words and trending topics and get involved. If you do these things, your posts will be retweeted and you’ll reach new followers you otherwise wouldn’t have.

Look out, Twitter! Pinterest is right behind you and gaining quickly. According to href="http://pewinternet.org/Commentary/2012/March/Pew-Internet-Social-Networking-full-detail.aspx" target="_blank">Pew Research’s December 2012 survey, Pinterest had reached 15% of all adult Internet users and Twitter was sitting at 16%. These two social media sites are neck in neck, so to really put your business on the map, you should promote on both Twitter and Pinterest.

Gregory Ferenstien wrote on Tech Crunch about the importance of this social media marketing platform:

Its focus on striking visuals and imagery makes it the perfect platform for retailers and lifestyle brands that want to share their most eye-catching content with an engaged and active community.

A Few Facts about Pinterest

style="text-align: center;">href="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/info-1.jpg">class="aligncenter wp-image-1533" title="Pinteresting Numbers: User Demographic and Quick Facts" alt="Pinteresting Numbers: User Demographic and Quick Facts" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/0529-4.jpg" width="600" height="567" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/0529-4.jpg 600w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/0529-4-300x283.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" />

You may not have heard of Pinterest, or maybe you thought it was just for moms wanting to “pin” crafts and recipes. Here are a few facts that you might find surprising gleaned from Pew Research reports:

  • Pinterest has over 12 million users and growing.
  • More than 28% of those users have a household income over 0K.
  • It is the third most popular social networking site in the United States.
  • href="http://bizrateinsights.com/blog/2012/10/15/online-consumer-pulse-pinterest-vs-facebook-which-social-sharing-site-wins-at-shopping-engagement/" target="_blank">Bizrate reported that 69% of the people who visit Pinterest find something to purchase. This is higher even than Facebook’s stats, which sit at 40%.

What the Heck is a “Pin”?

The basics of using Pinterest are pretty simple. You’ll likely want a personal account to pin items you personally want to read later and a business account to put your best foot forward to your customers.

  1. Sign up for an account at href="http://pinterest.com/">Pinterest.com.
  2. Login to your account and then hover over your username in the upper right corner. Click on “Your Boards”. This is where you can organize your boards, make them public or private, etc. Think of the boards in terms of categories. For example, if you run a web design business, you might create “boards” called: “Contests”, “New Services”, “Tips for Small Businesses”. You can add and delete boards at any time, so keep it simple at first.
  3. Now, go to the search box in the upper left corner of the screen and type any topic, such as “Food” to find articles that you can pin to your page if you desire. Pin things on your wall from others that relate to your business but do not compete as people will find their way to your wall through various “pins”.
  4. To upload a pin you’ve created to promote your business (more on this in a minute), hover over your username in the upper right corner and click on “Your Pins”. Near the top of your pins, you will see a gray box with a plus sign that says “Add a Pin”. Click on this and upload the item you wish to make available for pins and navigate to it on your computer or website.

Creating a “Pinable” Post

Just putting your business on Pinterest and making items available isn’t nearly enough. You need to create a post that readers will want to use, refer to later, pin to their wall and share with others. There is a certain pin-etiquette that pinners use and understanding that can help you create a good marketing post for this site.

  • Do not blatantly self-promote. Posting a logo of your business is not something that will inspire others to repin.
  • Offer something of value. For example, write a unique article that teaches, offers a craft related to your business or some other unique perspective. It is fine to include a reference and link at the bottom of this article, but do not overdo it. One mention is plenty.
  • Go against standard marketing letters. Today’s consumer is savvy. She recognizes a sales letter that is trying to get her buy a product. She won’t bother to repin this and will move on. Old-fashioned marketing tactics will not work. Instead, think of how you can offer value to your readers.

Examples of Good Pinnable Posts

Quotes and More Quotes

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1527" alt="Pinterest Board On Quotes" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0529-1.jpg" width="600" height="289" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0529-1.jpg 600w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0529-1-300x144.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" />

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1528" alt="AARP Pinterest Board On Quotes" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0529-3.jpg" width="600" height="247" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0529-3.jpg 600w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0529-3-300x123.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" />

Even the AARP has a board on Pinterest. They offer life quotes, which people can share on Facebook and other social media sites. At the bottom of each image with the quote on it, there is a small blurb about AARP. The blurb does not overpower the image and quote and is more of a credit to the creator of the meme.

If you plan to follow the AARP’s lead, either create fresh quotes of your own or use quotes from famous people. Always credit a quote to the original source. Same thing with the images. You don’t want to violate copyright laws. Use sources like iStockPhoto, Dreamstime or your own original images for the background of your meme.

Do It Yourself Projects

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1529" alt="DIY project on Pinterest " src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0529-2.jpg" width="600" height="308" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0529-2.jpg 600w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0529-2-300x154.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" />

You can offer pins of DIY projects without losing your customer base. Let’s say you own a small organic grocery delivery service. Offer pins about how to prepare a food that is on special in your stores that week, recipes and info on the health benefits of that food. No matter what kind of industry your business falls under, there is some DIY theme you can promote without selling your own services and products short.

Take it to Contest

In an article on Mashable writer Lauren Indvik points out that a contest that Land’s End held called “Pin It to Win It”. Lands’ End asked their customers to pin six different items to their boards. At the end of the contest, one of those items would be chosen and those who pinned it would be entered into a contest drawing to win that item. This is the perfect promotion for a business that offers products and can get the buzz going as the feeds of those customers comes up on other people’s home pages on Pinterest. Now that is viral marketing!

Gain a Following

The final step in making effective use of this site to drum up more interest has to do with gaining followers.

Follow Others

Your first course of action after you sign up on Pinterest should be to follow the boards of some of your family, friends and best customers. Remember that your best customers aren’t necessarily your biggest accounts, but those customers who often refer new customers to you and sing your praises. Following other people also can give you ideas of which pins are most popular and may spark an idea for your own promotions. Take the time to engage your customers. Pinterest is one of the quickest ways to show them you care by repinning something from one of them. It only takes seconds of your time.

Link to Other Social Media

You’re a busy business owner. Save time and never forget to cross-promote by  linking Twitter and Facebook into your Pinterest feed. Doing so is simple. Login to Pinterest. Hover over your username and choose “Settings”. Scroll down to the “Social Networks” category. You can set it to automatically post your activity to Facebook and Twitter, but you will have to link up those accounts first. Do this by simply turning on that ability to login with Facebook and Twitter and then choosing yes to post to timeline and Twitter feed.

Post Often

Even the most loyal followers will grow bored if you don’t post fresh content often. While you may have a limited amount of time, a good rule of thumb is at least once a week at first. Some companies post daily content. Remember that it doesn’t have to be a massive amount of information or a full article every time. Share a cute picture, a quick tip, a meme or an article written by a favored customer.

Promote on Your Website

Add a link to your website that has your Pinterest page, so your visitors can see what is going on over there and follow you if they are a Pinterest user. If you create posts for Facebook or Twitter, you may want to mention from time to time that you are also on Pinterest and just put up a new meme or article, so check it out.

Offer Customers an Incentive

Want to get the buzz going quickly? Offer your current customers an incentive if they share a post. For example, you could offer a 20% off coupon on the next order to any customer who repins your pin. Customers are usually happy to repin for you anyway and this gives them a nice thank you for their efforts. You may also want to offer new customers a similar deal once they order from you or sign up for your newsletter.

Pin Crazy

These basics will get you started with Pinterest and give you the potential to reach thousands upon thousands of new customers. Once you are comfortable with the basics, branch out and promote on sites like href="http://pinfaves.com" target="_blank">PinFaves.com, which is a voting platform for the best pins out there. This can gain you additional exposure and help you reach an audience you might not otherwise be able to reach.

Getting retweets is a combination of science and art. With millions of users competing for attention every minute; you need more than just work hard, you need to work smart.

To go viral in the Twitter universe, you need a sound tactic.

Actionable Advices, Tools, & Resources

class="alignright wp-image-1018" style="border: 0px;" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0501-1.jpg" alt="Twitter Followings" width="348" height="233" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0501-1.jpg 580w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/0501-1-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 348px) 100vw, 348px" />

The following list covers some of the most important elements in my Twitter success. If more retweets is all you want, I am sure you’ll find it valuable.

  1. Ask for it. Have your family members, friends, and acquaintances to start the ball rolling.
  2. Use call for action in your tweets. Phrases like ‘Please retweet’, ‘RT’ and ‘pls RT’ are proven words that get you more retweets.
  3. Tweet more on facts and meaningful quotes, people bite on those stuffs.
  4. Tweet less on idle talks, gossips, and small chats. Don’t just ROFL and Wassup me, say something useful.
  5. Tweet links. 52% of the retweet samples contain at least one link according to href="http://www.danah.org/papers/TweetTweetRetweet.pdf" target="_blank">Microsoft Research. People get on Twitter to get updates or to learn something, so feed them that.
  6. Tweet trending topics. Use Twitter Search and Twitter Trending features to discover hot topics to talk about.
  7. Tweet breaking news (okay, this is a nobrainer).
  8. Tweet about Twitter (yes, that gets more retweets href="http://danzarrella.com/infographic-5-scientifically-proven-ways-to-get-more-retweets.html" target="_blank">statistically).
  9. Tweet lists. Tip: tweet my 49 tips on how to get more retweets.
  10. Tweet WTF topic (yes, curiosity sells).
  11. Tweet the right labels. Use Google Trends to check if you are using the right terms in your tweets – href="http://www.google.com/trends/explore?q=cookie+law%2C+privacy+law#q=cookie%20law%2C%20privacy%20law&cmpt=q" target="_blank">cookie law is not the same as privacy law – use the right term if you wish to resonate well with your followers. href="http://www.google.com/trends/explore?q=cookie+law%2C+privacy+law#q=cookie%20law%2C%20privacy%20law&cmpt=q">
  12. Get as many relevant followers as possible. The more followers you have, the more likely your tweets are going to be retweeted.
  13. Interact with your followers and build trust. A simple auto-generated thank you note is fine, sending out personal message manually is better.
  14. State your retweet/follow back policy clearly on your profile to encourage interaction. See how Ted Coine does it href="https://twitter.com/tedcoine" target="_blank">here.
  15. Create a memorable title (href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/inbound-marketing/headlines-writing-guides/" target="_blank">good headline writing skill helps).
  16. Repeat your best tweets shamelessly – use tool like href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/go/tweetoldpost" target="_blank">Tweet Old Post.
  17. Send out new tweets repeatedly to your followers.
  18. Better still, schedule and send out the same tweets in various time in a day or week. For href="http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2010/08/30/popular-retweets/" target="_blank">example, Tim Ferris posts the same tweet 12 hours after the first in order to reach followers from different time zone.
  19. On timing, 2pm to 6 pm EST is the best time to ask for a retweet.
  20. But not all Twitter users live in the same time zone. Tweriod helps track your followers and customize the best timing to send out tweets, make use of the tool. http://www.tweriod.com/
  21. The best days of the week for retweets are Thursday and Friday.
  22. Show that there’s a real human behind the monitor, put up your personal photo on your personal Twitter account.
  23. Send out retweets more often than you ask for it. Chris Borgan follow a 15:1 ratio where he will promote others’ tweets fifteen times for every self-promotional tweets.
  24. Don’t just tweet the title of an article, add value to your tweets with your personal comment or summary of the subject.
  25. In the same time, leave room for retweets. Your tweet length shouldn’t exceed 120 characters.
  26. href="http://danzarrella.com/the-most-retweetable-words-finder-tool.html" target="_blank">Find the top 20 most retweeted words in your industry, use them more frequently in your tweets.
  27. Avoid common use words for conversation like ‘LOL’, ‘hey’, and ‘gonna’.
  28. Talk less about mundane activities. We are not your mom, no one is interested on what you are having for lunch.
  29. On tools, use href="http://tweepi.com/" target="_blank">Tweepi to manage your followers.
  30. Use href="http://tweetdeck.com/" target="_blank">TweetDeck to manage your Twitter interactions and streams.
  31. Use href="https://hootsuite.com/" target="_blank">HootSuite in case TweetDeck is not your cup of tea.
  32. Use href="http://twitpic.com/" target="_blank">TwitPic. Most people are visual-oriented hence pictures tend to get more attention from the crowd.
  33. Use href="http://mentionmapp.com/" target="_blank">MentionMap to explore and learn more bout your Twitter network.
  34. Use href="http://www.twitonomy.com/" target="_blank">Twitonomy to understand your followers better.
  35. Use href="http://twitterfeed.com/" target="_blank">Twitterfeed to speed up your routine tweet operations (so you have more time to interact with your followers instead).
  36. Get more exposures, add yourself at href="http://www.twellow.com/" target="_blank">Twellow.
  37. Track your tweets and outgoing links with href="http://bit.ly" target="_blank">bit.ly or href="http://su.pr" target="_blank">su.pr. A/B test to get the best performing tweets.
  38. If you tweet more often on mobile, try out TweetCaster. It is the next (or, already?) big thing in Twitter.
  39. Use #hashtags more often.
  40. Promote others by using  @mention. I do shout out for my followers regularly, something like “Please follow @userA @userB @userC etc” and it always bring back more follows and retweets. People normally tend to reciprocate others’ goodwill, as the old saying give and you shall receive.
  41. Befriend with the connectors in your industry.
  42. Run a Twitter contest and ask the contestants to retweet your stuffs (WebRevenue.co might be interested to be one of your sponsors, let’s talk).
  43. Use href="http://www.paywithatweet.com/" target="_blank">Pay With A Tweet.  Sell information products for the price of a tweet or ask for a donation in form of tweets and retweets.
  44. Don’t focus on selling. Take Twitter as a stepping stone in sales, direct your followers/prospects to your landing pages.
  45. Show numbers as numerals, “45” is better than “forty-five”. Data based on href="http://www.nngroup.com/articles/web-writing-show-numbers-as-numerals/" target="_blank">eye tracking studies indicates that numbers are better than word.
  46. Stop talking about yourself. There are only 1% of the retweets contain self-reference according to studies.
  47. Tweets clearly, write simple and direct words. Avoid being misleading or over-promise.
  48. Learn from someone who has done it, model his/her method. Tip: read Gina’s href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/socialmedia-marketing/5-easy-steps-to-get-10000-followers/" target="_blank">5 Easy Steps To Get 10,000 Followers.
  49. Last but not least, read Dan Zarrella’s href="http://danzarrella.com/the-science-of-retweets-report.html" target="_blank">Science of Retweets. It’s an old piece but there’s gold in it – many of my advice here are based on Dan’s statistics.

10 Killer Strategies to Win more Traffic for Your Blog

alt="10 Killer Strategies to Win more Traffic for Your Blog" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/drive-traffic-500x332_c.jpg" />

Do you feel like getting more traffic to your blog is a never-ending battle? Have you tried everything you can think of and your traffic is still flat? Here are ten killer strategies that will help you win the numbers game and get more visitors to your site. You may have heard of some of these tips and tricks, but we’ll look at them in a fresh way. Others will be new ideas you’ve likely not thought of before.

style="line-height: 1.5em;">Here go our 10 tips on how to drive more traffics to your blogs.

# 1: Network with Other Bloggers, even the Smaller Ones

href="http://www.blog-growth.com/101-experts-share-their-tips-for-online-success/" target="_blank">Blog Growth interviewed a number of blog gurus about how they drive traffic to their own blogs. Dino Dogan, owner of title="Triberr" href="http://triberr.com/" target="_blank">Triberr and a blogger, shared:

“Many young bloggers take the obvious route of focusing on big blogs and big names. That’s a waste of time. I would definitely focus more on my peers, rather than gurus, big names, and experts. This means I would read blogs by my peers. Share their stuff. Comment on their posts. Link to them, etc.”

Visit the blogs of others in your niche area. If you write about recipes, visit other recipe blogs and add your thoughts on that blog. Be respectful, though. The quickest way to get your virtual hand slapped is to spam a blog with something like:

Woohoo. Good blog, but mine is good too. Visit me at XYZRecipes.com

This is considered rude by other bloggers and readers. Instead, add an insightful comments such as:

Adding a dash of cilantro to this dish really kicks up the flavor to a new level.

The majority of blogs offer the ability to place a link to your website either turning your name into a hyperlink or creating a separate link just under your name. Use that feature, if it’s available, but do not self-promote relentlessly.

Other ways to network with other bloggers:

  • Use social media to share other bloggers’ content. They will likely return the favor.
  • Develop a relationship via e-mail or private chat rooms. As always use common sense and caution when talking to people you don’t know in person.
  • Start a networking group of local bloggers and meet up at a coffee shop once a month to share tips.
  • Attend a conference or retreat with other bloggers such as the href="http://beechretreat.com/about/" target="_blank">Beech Retreat.

# 2: Get Social

According to href="http://socialmediatoday.com/node/1656466">Social Media Today, Facebook now has close to a billion active users. That may be why 70% of B2C companies have gained at least one customer from Facebook. Here are some additional social media sites where you should consider having a presence for your company by posting, offering coupons or creating interesting memes:

  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn
  • YouTube
  • Google+
  • Instagram
  • Pinterest

These are hot commodities right now, but stay up on the trends so you can take advantage of up and coming social media that is popular. For example, if you’re selling books, you’ll also want a presence on sites like href="http://www.goodreads.com/">Good Reads and href="http://www.shelfari.com/" target="_blank">Shelfari.

# 3: Guest Blog

Think href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/write-for-us/" target="_blank">guest blogging is a dying art? Think again.

Remember those other blog owners you’ve spent time building a relationship with? Ask them if they’d like to post a guest article on your site and offer to return the favor. You’ll reach new readers, who just may visit your site.

Although there are no hard and fast statistics on guest blogging, it stands to reason that sites that welcome guest bloggers are updated frequently with fresh content. The search engines will crawl and index this content, which will drive visitors to your article.

Here are some things to keep in mind to get the most out of a guest blogging experience:

  • Seek out blogs that are about topics your target customers are interested in. If you sell golf tees, then you want to blog on a site about golfing tips and not on a hair care site.
  • Ask the blog owner if you can include a bio with a link to your website at the bottom of the article and at least one text link within your article.
  • Avoid sites with questionable content or anything that might offend your customers.

# 4: Gain a Radio Presence

style="text-align: center;">href="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/broadcasting-on-radio.jpg">class="size-full wp-image-6690 border aligncenter" alt="broadcasting on radio" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/broadcasting-on-radio.jpg" width="750" height="600" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/broadcasting-on-radio.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/broadcasting-on-radio-300x240.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

In a previous article, I covered how you can gain traffic by href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/web-business-ideas/how-internet-radio-can-increase-your-sites-traffic/">hosting an online radio show. About 42 million people regularly listen to Internet radio according to href="http://www.targetspot.com/research/">Target Spot and that number grows every year. Some things to keep in mind:

  • Start slow and create a separate landing page, which you give out over the air, so you can do A/B testing to see which ads are most effective with gaining new site visitors.
  • Stick to a topic related to your site. If you sell household products, offer cleaning tips. If you sell dog shampoo only, don’t talk about cat behavior. Just keep it simple.
  • Don’t like to talk? Get a friend or family member to do the show for you or trade with another blogger/radio host to get advertising spots on his show.

# 5: Give Dubbler a Try

style="text-align: center;">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6709 border" alt="Dubbler" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/dubbler.jpg" width="750" height="385" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/dubbler.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/dubbler-300x154.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

Dubbler (href="http://www.dubbler.com/">http://www.dubbler.com/) is an app that works with both IOS and Andriod phones. It allows you to record 30 to 60 second bites of audio. You can then upload what you’ve recorded to the Dubbler community and it is instantly available to other Dubbler users. In addition to a simple recording, you can add:

  • A cover image
  • Voice filters
  • A blog URL in your description field

This is something different that you likely haven’t tried yet and that will reach new site visitors who otherwise might not have traveled to your site.

# 6: Use SlideShare

style="text-align: center;">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6710 " alt="Slide Share" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/slide-share.jpg" width="750" height="381" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/slide-share.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/slide-share-300x152.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

SlideShare (href="http://slideshare.com/">http://slideshare.com/) gets about 60 million monthly visitors and 120 million monthly pageviews (surprise?), so the market for new site visitors is massive at this presentation sharing site. Not only will you have the opportunity to reach some of those visitors, but you can upload a presentation that explains some aspect of what you do. It is among the top 200 sites in the world.

According to their About page:

“SlideShare content spreads virally through blogs and social networks such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. Individuals & organizations upload documents to SlideShare to share ideas, conduct research, connect with others, and generate leads for their businesses.”

If you can create a PowerPoint presentation, you can easily create a SlideShare to share your knowledge with a link at the end back to your blog.

# 7: Optimize Your Headlines

Remember that a headline is the first thing that a site visitor sees when he lands on your page. It is also what draws the eye in a list of search engine results. You have an opportunity with your headline to grab that reader, hook him and make him want to read more. There are numerous things you can do to href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/inbound-marketing/headlines-writing-guides/">create an engaging headline, but some of the most successful blog headlines include:

Type of Headline: Call-to-Action

Sample: “Save 50% on Your Grocery Bill”

Type of Headline: Fear-Based

Sample: “Keep Your Pet from Disaster During an Emergency”

Type of Headline: Top Reasons

Sample: “Top 10 Reasons You Should Exfoliate Your Skin”

There are many other headline categories, but using the structure of headlines that have been successful for other bloggers can help more readers find your posts.

# 8: Become an Expert on Q&A Sites

Establish yourself as an expert in your field and people will search for your name in search engines and come to your site to learn more. One example of someone who has established themselves as an expert is the personal finance guru Dave Ramsey. Dave hosts a radio show and answers questions about how to get out of debt and make smart money choices. His blog offers additional advice on how to be financially smart. Dave also does seminars and offers a kit to groups to teach his principals.

You can recreate this effect online by becoming known on Q&A sites. Here are some tips to get the most from them:

  • Answer questions that are getting a lot of views or chatter.
  • Answer questions that no one else seems able to answer.
  • Go above and beyond what any other poster does and offer some inside knowledge and examples that cannot be readily found on the Internet.

Sites to try include:

  • href="http://wiki.answers.com/">Answers.com
  • href="http://formspring.com">Formspring
  • href="http://stackexchange.com">StackExchange
  • href="http://answers.yahoo.com">Yahoo! Answers
  • href="http://quora.com">Quora

# 9: Place Claim on Your Photos

Did you take a beautiful picture of a baby pink rose blooming in your garden? Open up your favorite photo editor or use an online service like LunaPic to add text to that photo.

In bold letters along the bottom type the name of your website and the URL address. People will take your photos. Sometimes they don’t understand copyright completely and think as long as they attribute the photo to you they can use it. Other times, they do understand and figure you’ll never notice. Whatever their reasoning, if they are going to grab your original photo, you might as well get in a little free advertising.

 # 10: Post Regularly and Keep It Short

Internet users are busy people. They don’t have time to spend an hour reading through a bulky blog post. You may think that the statistics on how often a sloth blinks his eyes are fascinating in a three-page long chart, but your reader just wants the simple fact that he blinks his eyes X number of times a second.

Keep your posts short and to the point and readers will come back for more. Speaking of that, when the reader comes back, you really need to have fresh content or you risk losing them. Not only will fresh content keep your current visitors coming back, but the search engines will crawl your site and index these new pages. Google algorithms now take into account how current content is, if the site is updated and many other factors. Don’t give Google a chance to give your site a demerit and lower ranking because you haven’t updated in months. Create a publishing schedule and stick to it, even if it means taking on guest blog posts to stick to the schedule.

Be Creative!

style="text-align: center;">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6679 border" alt="drive traffic to your site" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/drive-traffic.jpg" width="750" height="499" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/drive-traffic.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/drive-traffic-300x199.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

These 10 ideas will get you started on the path to driving more traffic to your blog, but the best way to attract new visitors is to try out different things.

Be creative.

If there is a local networking group, print up business cards with your blog address and pass them out to the other members. Say something cute like, “If you scratch my site, I’ll scratch yours.” Of course, you have to be able to gauge the attitude of the group you’re with. Some are very professional and wouldn’t think that was funny, so you’d need to word things a bit differently. Keep your eyes and ears on the latest trends in pop culture and the online world and you’ll discover many different places where you can get the word out about your blog posts.

Why Author Rank Matters More After The Death Of Google Authorship

alt="Why Author Rank Matters More After The Death Of Google Authorship" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/1-500x490_c.jpg" />

class="alignright size-full wp-image-10951" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/1.jpg" alt="1" width="330" height="324" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/1.jpg 330w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/1-300x294.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px" />

What does an editorial by an established author have in common with all the other content pieces by all the other authors in your niche?

Too much… there are countless authors who are musing the same ideas as authoritative writers, and in similar ways.

But how should readers identify and choose content written by an authority over another writer’s work?

Google made it easy to identify the work of certain authors on the premise that ‘some people are smarter than others on certain topics’. It introduced the ‘Google Authorship’ program with the aim of giving authors who were better informed on their subject matter greater importance in search engines.

Google Authorship permitted authors to include structured data mark-ups in their website’s code which would display an author’s image with their name next to a content price so it is visible to readers who is behind the piece and make a decision according to the person’s work.

The U-turn by Google

After a multi-year experiment with Google Authorship, the search engine company has pulled the plug, and the feature is no longer available.

Google removed all author photos at the end of June 2014 from global search, and just left bylines at that time. John Mueller, Webmaster Trends Analyst, href="https://plus.google.com/+JohnMueller/posts/PDkPdPtjL6j" target="_blank">stated in a Google+ post the images were removed because Google was taking a more unified approach towards mobile and desktop search, and author images were not working well for the limited screen space on mobile.

Later, Google removed the Authorship information from search results altogether. href="https://plus.google.com/+JohnMueller/posts/HZf3KDP1Dm8" target="_blank">Muller said in a Google+ post that the reason behind ending the project was that the feature was not as valuable to readers as the company hoped and sometimes even posed a distraction.

class="wp-image-10952 size-full aligncenter" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/21.png" alt="2" width="521" height="129" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/21.png 521w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/21-300x74.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 521px) 100vw, 521px" />

Perhaps this was coming as neither readers nor authors every really took Authorship seriously enough. href="https://plus.google.com/+RayHiltz/posts/8DHh2a7ihsZ" target="_blank">Its adoption rate was low, and it was only working for authors who had set up a Google+ profile and markup in their site or the sites they contributed to (rel=author) linking to their Google+ profile. For something this technical there was only ever going to be a fairly limited adoption.

But whilst this experiment into giving authors added benefits based on the authority of their work may not have proved fruitful, you would not discount Google from abandoning the idea all together, especially when it provided a logical way of increasing the trustworthiness, relevancy and authority established authors provide to their users.
It appears Google still has a way of determining author value with ‘Author Rank’.

What is Author Rank?

Author Rank, independent from Google Authorship, is a search algorithm that will score authors based on factors such as the social sharing of their posts, quality of backlinks to their content, interactions with their content, PageRank and the authority of publishing sites.

Within search rankings, information tied to these factors would rank higher than content not having an association with such factors, which will result in established authors gaining a higher visibility in search engines.

Author Rank doesn’t require implementation of any new code on your website. Essentially, Google will be accessing a value of an author based on this rank, so a user who is well-informed, well-engaged, writes great content, and is recognized by a large community, will enjoy a higher author ranking.

href="https://twitter.com/mattcutts/statuses/443560265808756736" target="_blank">Matt Cutts tweeted Author Rank is not implemented on every single page, but ‘it does come into play in some ways. For example, in-depth articles use that data, I’m pretty sure.’

The reason Google Authorship came into existence in the first place was due to the difficulty in filtering out individual authors. So how does Google go about helping readers correctly identify which authors are which, and which are important, is what the topic of Author Rank will center around.

Author Rank after the death of Google Authorship

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-11087" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/author-rank.jpg" alt="author rank" width="750" height="254" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/author-rank.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/author-rank-300x101.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

Crucially, authors will be judged in more natural ways about how useful they are to search engine readers. Some ways in which Google is looking to do this has already started to appear.

In addition to the gradual move towards sematic search, Google is likely to utilize Author Rank factors to identify certain ‘entities’ that are separate from each other in an effort to filter authors akin to its Authorship program closure in a more natural way.

How can it be, when Google has completely ignored Authorship markup at the same time?

Google considers it a better approach to identify authoritative figures in search results based on the factors that make up Author Rank.

Google will likely give more consideration to bylines, which existed long before Google Authorship. So in case you’re an author who is concerned that more Author Rank use will likely be the future, start believing. This is going to be the chief technique signaling who is the most established author of a content piece.

What the pros are doing and suggesting

href="https://plus.google.com/+KevinDuncan" target="_blank">Kevin Duncan

We bloggers cannot control what Google does, but we can take the things which made Google Authorship so effective in search results, and apply them to our blogs.

Duncan advices authors to add the perception of authority to their sites/blogs. If there is social proof about your authority, use that to your advantage. For example, you can show the comments received on your blog by the comments counter stand out in your blog’s design, or flaunt the number of followers you have on social media, like Darren Rowse has done on ProBlogger: he has proudly displayed 300,000+ subscribers and 66,000+ Facebook fans in his blog’s sidebar. Likewise, Adam Connell has an image of his connections to KISSmetrics, HuffPost, and more in his sidebar.

href="https://plus.google.com/+PamAungst" target="_blank">Pam Aungst

It may not be called “Authorship” anymore, so sure – go ahead and call that *word* dead, but author influence is very much alive.

Aungst’s strategy is to continue making efforts to increase the Google+ presence of her company’s SEO clients. She reminds that search users will still see Google+ posts from pages and friends when they’re relevant to queries, so Authorship’s death doesn’t impact these social features. That means the more audience in your target market are connected to Google+, the more likely you are going to receive recognition as an author for the content posted on Google+.

href="https://plus.google.com/101669415833397825384" target="_blank">Sam DeBord

The end of Authorship might leave us thinking that the remnants of Authorship code strewn across the Web are just a reminder of Google’s fickle behavior, but there is some really important direction left in the overall trend of the project.

DeBord suggests it may be a good idea to follow the usual clichés: create quality content; promote it; connect and engage with the right people. And just make sure Google sees you making these efforts. You can’t generate a good Author Rank without generating good material, so start publishing quality pieces. If Google recognizes who you are, and you continue doing it right, you’ll be rewarded eventually.

So, given the propensity of Google to consider new elements when ranking authors, it seems the best long-term play is to ensure that your digital wingspan places a focus on factors that affect Author Rank.

you should…

  • Share your content on social networks, and encourage your followers to share your posts further.
  • href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/inbound-marketing/how-to-drive-massive-traffic-to-your-blog-via-guest-blogging/" target="_blank">Contribute to other blogs, websites, magazines, etc. Your contributor byline will play an important role in getting your figure recognized and the anchor link used in that byline can be used to gain backlinks to your other content pieces.
  • Promote yourself as an author in online communities other than social networks, such as forums and comment sections of other websites.
  • Write data-rich content, for a chance to be featured in the ‘in-depth’ section of Google Search.

More about in-depth content

Why I suggest focusing on getting yourself featured in Google’s in-depth section?

The main reason is that it contains pieces that are published by highly established authors. These pieces include detailed business reports, whitepapers and case studies; this form of content requires a lot of effort on the author’s part and Google recognizes that. The search giant’s Hummingbird algorithm even places more emphasis on rich content, so in-depth content pieces are a great way to increase your author value.

So, how do you get closer to achieving recognition in the in-depth section? Here are some actionable tips that should help:

1. Implement Schema.org markup

Google recommends adding a piece of code to your publication marking its

  • Alternative Headline
  • Headline
  • Description
  • Date Published
  • Crawlable and Indexable image
  • Article Body

Ready-made templates are available at Schema.org/Article.

2. Use Google Authorship

I assume most of you reading will already be doing this. href="http://www.copyblogger.com/wordpress-google-authorship/" target="_blank">Get it back if you’ve removed Authorship for the content you create.

3. Use pagination

If you create an in-depth piece that is spread across multiple pages, let Google know these pages make up a single article by using pagination. href="http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2012/03/video-about-pagination-with-relnext-and.html" target="_blank">See this video from Maile Ohye.

4. Add a logo

Specifiy your company’s logo to help your piece in getting selected for the in-depth section. This can be done either through

• href="http://schema.org/Organization" target="_blank">Using Organization markup from Schema.org, or
• href="http://www.google.com/+/business/?rd=1" target="_blank">By linking your Google+ page to the website

5. Produce rich content

This is the most important step to ensure that your in-depth articles get picked up by Google for having detailed, informative and rich content within them. All the stats, data and information needs to be updated if you’re going to achieve some recognition as an influential author, because you’ll be competing against some of the biggest names in your industry… authors from the likes of The Huffington Post, Wall Street Journal and New York Times. Also, remember to follow href="https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/3280182?hl=en" target="_blank">Google’s recommendations on marking up critical details about your in-depth content piece.

Conclusion

The good news is if you’ve already been spending time building yourself as a leading author in your niche, your work towards these factors is already likely cut short.

Author Rank and factors that affect it may currently be a minor ripple on the sea, but with the death of Google Authorship, it is the only practical thing to lean on.

In the United States, many business owners spent the month scurrying to meet the April 15th tax filing deadline. Let’s face it, most business owners barely have time to finish half the tasks on their to do lists, much less keep careful track of things such as mileage and business expenses. Still, the tax deadline does arrive and all businesses must file with the IRS. Once that hectic time of the year is past, you’ll want to refocus on growing your business and making more money in the coming year.

WHSR published some April articles that you’ll find helpful with this task. From ways to drive traffic to your blog to ideas on ways to make money from your blog, you’ll be gaining readers and income before you know it.

Building Blog Traffics
