How to Create Automated Website Screenshots in WordPress

Do you want to create automated website screenshots in your WordPress site? If you frequently add website screenshots to your WordPress posts or pages, then automating the process will save you time spent on capturing screenshots manually. In this article, we will show you how to create automated website screenshots in WordPress.

Creating automated website screenshots in WordPress

Method 1: Create Automatic Website Screenshots in WordPress using Plugin

This method is easier thus recommended for beginners and users who don’t want to deal with code.

First thing you need to do is install and activate the Browser Shots plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

The plugin works out of the box, and there are no settings for you to configure.

Simply edit a post/page or create a new one. You will notice a new button in the visual editor to add website screenshots.

Browser Shots button in WordPress visual editor

Clicking on it will bring up a popup where you can enter the website URL, alternate text, link to URL, and height / width of the screenshot.

Enter a URL to generate website screenshot

Click on OK button and the plugin will add a shortcode to your WordPress post. You can now preview your post to see the plugin in action.

If you are using the Text Editor in WordPress or don’t want to use the button in visual editor, then you can also manually add the shortcode yourself.

[browser-shot url="http://www.wpbeginner.com"]

By default, the plugin will create a screenshot of 600 x 600 pixels. You can change that by adding the width and height attributes to the shortcode.

[browser-shot url="http://www.wpbeginner.com" width="400" height="400"]

It will also automatically link to the website. You can change that by adding a link attribute to the shortcode and add any link you want.

[browser-shot url="http://www.wpbeginner.com" width="400" height="400" link="http://example.com"]

If you want to add a caption below the screenshot, then you can do that by wrapping the caption text around the shortcode.

[browser-shot url="http://www.wpbeginner.com"]WPBeginner - WordPress Resource Site for Beginners[/browser-shot]

The caption will use your WordPress theme’s caption styles. Here is how it looked on our demo website:

Website screenshot generated with Browser Shots plugin

Browser Shots plugin uses WordPress.com’s mshots API to generate screenshots on the fly. These images are not stored in your WordPress media library. They are served directly from WordPress.com servers.

See our guide on the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

Method 2: Create Automated Screenshots by Adding Code to WordPress

This method requires you to add code to your WordPress files. It is not recommended for beginners. If you are comfortable pasting snippets from web into WordPress, then you can use this method.

Simply add this code to your theme’s functions.php file or a site-specific plugin.

function wpb_screenshots($atts, $content = NULL) {
extract(shortcode_atts(array(
"snap" => 'http://s.wordpress.com/mshots/v1/',
"url" => 'http://www.wpbeginner.com',
"alt" => 'screenshot',
"w" => '600', // width
"h" => '450' // height
), $atts));

$img = '<img alt="' . $alt . '" src="' . $snap . '' . urlencode($url) . '?w=' . $w . '&h=' . $h . '" />';

return $img;
}
add_shortcode("screen", "wpb_screenshots");

Similar to the plugin we mentioned earlier, this code also uses the WordPress.com mshots API to generate screenshots on the fly.

To display a website screenshot in your WordPress posts and pages, you will need to enter the shortcode like this:

[screen url=”http://wpbeginner.com” alt=”WPBeginner”]

Replace URL and Alt fields with your own values.

By default, this code will generate a screenshot of 600 x 450 pixels. You can change that by adding your own height and width attributes to the shortcode.

[screen url=”http://wpbeginner.com” alt=”WPBeginner” w=”400″ h=”400″]

A Brief On Website Response Time Measurement

alt="A Brief On Website Response Time Measurement" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/default-image-500x308_c.jpg" />

The time elapsed from the moment of the request of a certain URL until the requested page is fully displayed is defined as response time. This process consists of 3 units – transmission, processing and rendering.

  • Transmission is the time necessary to transmit the user’s request and receive the server’s response.
  • Processing describes the period during which the server has to process the request and generate the response.
  • Rendering is a client-side operation and includes the time needed by the client machine to display the response.

There are several ways to measure the website’s response – client-side testing, server-side measurement and remote website monitoring from different locations. All of these methods have their advantages, but the choice is up to you.

Server-side Measurement

Server-side measurement is reliable, but can sometimes be difficult when there are proxy servers, which are quite common today. Being a server-side application, there can be a lot of issues with the configuration and in some of the cases it will go down with your site and there may not be much else that you can do. Server-side measurement is a good approach for collecting visitor information, but does not have the full functionality of the remote monitoring.

Client-side Testing

Client-side testing is the best way through which you can get the most accurate perception of what your users are experiencing. However, it is limited to your network or geographical location and, more often than not, it does not reflect the universal experience that the average Internet user has with your site. There are several tools which can help you measure your website’s response time. Some are simple client-side scripts and others are more advanced (e.g. Yslow from Yahoo! and Page Speed from Google). The latter two tools are best used with Firefox and are mostly used as additions to Firebug.

Although client-side testing is a great way to gain first-hand information about the users’ experience, it can be time consuming and it only provides you with details for your site’s visibility from only one location. This may not be an issue if your business is local, but it is not sufficient for online retailers and service providers with clients all over the world.

Remote Website Monitoring

Remote monitoring is a recurring test that is performed by one or more remote locations at the same time. You can run various tests from different geographical locations, effectively simulate user’s experience from the different checking points and get accurate information about your website’s response time. It is accurate, easy to implement and its applications are backed up with a flexible reporting system and emergency 24/7 live support.

5 Must-See Website Uptime Monitoring Services

alt="5 Must-See Website Uptime Monitoring Services" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/default-image-500x308_c.jpg" />

id='floatright'>src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2011/0414-7.jpg" alt="Website Uptime Report" />

In developing any business online one of the most overlooked areas in business management strategies is having a service oversee their website uptime. Many people assume that their web host is going to be responsible for alerting them when their website goes down. This is a big myth and in fact it runs entirely contrary to what a website hosting company would do. Think about it. Why would a web hosting company tell their clients there service is having troubles causing their site to be down temporarily? They are going to hope a client doesn’t spot it as it directly affects the claims that most web hosting companies say they can provide 99.9% uptime.

An online business is only as good as the amount of time that it’s up online. When I first got started running multiple websites online I heavily relied on my sites being up especially when I was running pay per click campaigns. Now if your just running a personal blog that doesn’t rely on being available for members, readers or advertising campaigns then you might not be too bothered by half an hour of down time but for companies who rely on their site being online every minute of the day. A 30 minute or longer down time can have devastating effects on their long term goals.

Why Website Uptime Monitoring Service Matters?

The truth is not all web hosting company can provide 99.9% uptime as many web hosting companies are packing servers with clients and multiple people are sharing servers even on reseller plans.  If you are seeking a stronger and more reliable solution they will need to look into dedicated plans that are either self or fully managed.  The challenge for many small based businesses is that going dedicated requires a huge investment of money each month when a shared or reseller plan would suffice at a fraction of the cost.  So what is the solution? Website monitoring services are, but which ones are the top services in their industry? Why are they the top? And what do you really need vs what they offer?

Key Things to Look For:

  • What is the interval between each time they check your site?
  • What methods do they provide to alert you to down time?
  • What Reporting do they provide for tracking long term site performance?
  • What are the price options?

What’s next if you found your site is down?

So href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/web-hosting-knowledge/your-site-is-down-what-should-you-do/">your site is down, now what? In case you notice that your site is going down at odd hours of the day and for extended periods of time. There are a number of things that could be causing it and a few things you can do short term are:

  • The scripts you are running on your site can add increased strain on servers and usually are responsible for down time
  • Contact your web host and make them aware that you know this is going on as you have reports to show. See what they will do about it. Don’t leap to the assumption that they are aware of it, they may have 1 server and are piling too many people on that server causing added strain or one person on that server could be using a script that is affecting the server and in turn going to cause issues with other sites on that server.
  • Visit href="http://www.DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com">DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com (awesome web tool) and check if your ISP is having connection problem with your name server. If so, contact your ISP to rectify the problem.

For long term solution, href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/web-hosting-knowledge/moving-to-a-new-hosting-checklist-guide/">switching web host might be a good solution if your web host is the one causing the outage.

What can you do to avoid downtime?

  • Be sure to use a website monitoring service that offers checking your site at least every 15 mins
  • Do you homework, read at least a few href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/web-hosting-review/">web hosting reviews to know your choices before you get decided.
  • If you plan on running a service, membership site or store, consider getting a dedicated server as that way you will be the only one on the server and there will be less strain placed on it.
  • Have someone manage your dedicated server – many hosting companies, in fact, offer website monitoring as part of their hosting package (but then again, you gotta make sure that they are trustworthy).

A new version of Pingdom iPhone app has just released. As expected by many experienced webmasters, the new Pingdom iPhone app 2.0 now comes with push notifications – where you’ll get instant alert on your iPhone when your site goes down.

Uptime in graphical view

Also, the new Pingdom iPhone apps added a couple of graphical tweaks. Users (both free and paid accounts) can now examine website uptime and response time trend directly from their iPhones. As you can see from figures below, graphs are shown in various date range.

How much does Pingdom iPhone app cost?

This application is totally free if you have a Pingdom account (which can be created for free as well).

However, the free account allows you to monitor one website only. To go further, you will need to purchase a Basic or Business Account. The Basic membership allows you to monitoring five websites concurrently at the cost of .95/mo; while for Business Account, users get to monitor 30 websites and receive up to 200 sms alerts for a price of .95/mo.

Sidenote: What exactly Pingdom does?

In layman term, Pingdom is like a watchdog for your website. The service monitors websites and servers from multiple locations on the Internet to make sure that they are working fine. Pingdom are often used to monitor uptime for websites, FTP servers, mail servers, as well as any other kind of services that should be accessible from the Internet.

Do note that I do not receive any credits from Pingdom writing this post. It’s just because that I am very impressed with their service and think you should at least give the free account a try.

Ecommerce is well on its way to being the next super mall. The ease, variety, and price comparing are cultivating an even stronger online shopping culture. If you have been looking for some inspiration to design a new site or update your current one, look no further! I’ve compiled some of the best, trend setting ecommerce designs around – take a look and let me know which ones you love the most.

UnderArmour

As a frequent online clothing shopper, I love the ability to realistically see the change in apparel colors. It adds confidence in my color selection as I chose which one to purchase. I also love the subtle details in the background image; it adds to the design but doesn’t distract from the main focus.

Cabelas

src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2011/cabelas.JPG" alt="Cabelas screenshot " class='border' />

Converse

src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2011/converse.JPG" alt="Converse screenshot " class='border' />

There are three things about this site that stand out to me – the very unique above the fold layout, the “filter by” color wheel, and the design your own shoe. I don’t know how many times I have wanted a certain color of shoes and I’ve had to wade through every color to find what I’m looking for. The design your own shoe plays very well to their target audience.

src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2011/abercrombie.JPG" alt="Abercrombie screenshot " class='border' />
