100% Uptime – Real or Not?

alt="100% Uptime – Real or Not?" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/default-image-500x308_c.jpg" />

Undoubtedly, if you have ever contacted or used hosting sites, you’ve noticed the 98.9%, 99.9% and even 100% server uptime labels there. Normally, you would think “Well, 99.9% sounds very good indeed, 0.01% downtime is no big deal” and you would be right. What many people are missing, however, is that even if the server is reachable, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is functioning properly. In fact, there are a lot of other things that can go wrong with a server. The 99.99% uptime sticker does not provide any guarantee that your business will not encounter other problems while the server is up. Hosting providers often calculate uptime in ways that are not so intuitive from a user’s point of view and in some cases they do not take into account certain website downtime.

Not All Downtime Is Counted!

In the first place, you have to keep in mind that not all downtime is counted (e.g. in most cases the scheduled downtime is not even considered). Hosting companies will not willingly include these several hours of downtime to their statistics. When they calculate the monthly server uptime the planned services interruptions are not deducted.

(Jerry’s note: Trust me, that’s true for certain web host! This is why hosting shoppers are advised to href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-reviews/">read third-party hosting reviews and regular updates on server uptime.)

Moreover, some hosting companies are also inclined to overlook shorter downtime periods. Outages of 3-5 minutes are not considered significant and are also not included in the 99.9% stats. But, in the end of the day, multiple short downtime periods can actually add up and make a difference.

One more thing to consider – a 1% difference means twice the trouble. 99.9% uptime in fact shows a downtime of 8 hours and 45 minutes per year. So, if the sticker reads 98.9%, the downtime value reaches 17 hours and 30 minutes.

You have to accept the universal truth that resources are limited. “Unlimited” is just a euphemism for “enough for the majority of the common users”. But what if your business is not a common one and demand is high? There may be other significant sites that share the same hosting hardware with you. Sooner or later, this may lead to a server overload and thus result in high loading times, broken transactions, etc. In a case like this, the server will still be online, but the performance will be far below your needs. One good way to detect such problems quickly is application monitoring.

Bottom Line

Let’s face it – 100% is not easily achievable. Something is bound to go wrong eventually. There will be problems with network backbones, power failures, software and hardware issues and even human errors. So, instead of trying to find the ultimate hosting provider, get a decent one with good server uptime and performance, 24-hour technical support and frequent backups. And make sure to get a reliable remote website monitoring service, just in case. It might just turn out to be the best money you ever spent.

Updates: Hostgator Uptime Review

alt="Updates: Hostgator Uptime Review" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/hostgator-500x220_c.jpg" />

Following up on the href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/discount-freebies/web-hosting-coupons/hostgator-hosting-coupon/">Hostgator Coupon Code post, I am gonna show you something quick about the Gators in this blogpost. You might want to check out my href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-review/hostgator/">Hostgator Review to see what I think about them, in details; but in case you are sort of in a hurry, this short post should tell you everything you need to know about Hostgator.

Hostgator Uptime Review

Firstly, you need to know that this site, WebHostingSecretRevealed.com, is hosted at Hostgator since year 2009 and I’ve been tracking its uptime since the beginning (that’s how I review a hosting service after all).

Now, check out the graph below – it shows the uptime record of WHSR for the past 14 months.

class="border" alt="WHSR uptime record at Hostgator" src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/images/2011/0304-1.jpg" width="750" height="978" />

Translation Please…

I am tracking my site’s uptime using PingDom and the graph is showing WHSR’s uptime record from January 1, 2010 till Febuary 28, 2011. Saw the flat green line? That’s the indicating line representing WHSR’s uptime it is marking on the 100% point. That’s right, WHSR is ‘up and running’ (almost) 24/7 just like this dead-flat line.

In case you wonder, Hostgator scored a 99.96% server uptime for the past 14 months with 3 hours and 44 minutes within this period, and the number of down-times is 33x.

If you have been tracking (and reading) website uptime regularly, you should understand that this is a S-U-P-E-R-B result for a shared-hosted website. I mean, these guys might be a little more expensive than the rest but hey, 99.96% uptime on a shared server! Isn’t that something remarkable and worth paying extra for? By the way, if you look close enough, you are going to see a small ‘valley’ in the middle (that’s 07/19/2010 FYI) and that’s the only unplanned downtime I had with Hostgator in 14 months.

So… there goes my updates on Hostgator’s recent performance – I hope it helps. For full-length evaluation on Hostgator hosting service, check out my href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-review/hostgator/">Hostgator Review.

5 Must-See Website Uptime Monitoring Services

alt="5 Must-See Website Uptime Monitoring Services" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/default-image-500x308_c.jpg" />

id='floatright'>src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2011/0414-7.jpg" alt="Website Uptime Report" />

In developing any business online one of the most overlooked areas in business management strategies is having a service oversee their website uptime. Many people assume that their web host is going to be responsible for alerting them when their website goes down. This is a big myth and in fact it runs entirely contrary to what a website hosting company would do. Think about it. Why would a web hosting company tell their clients there service is having troubles causing their site to be down temporarily? They are going to hope a client doesn’t spot it as it directly affects the claims that most web hosting companies say they can provide 99.9% uptime.

An online business is only as good as the amount of time that it’s up online. When I first got started running multiple websites online I heavily relied on my sites being up especially when I was running pay per click campaigns. Now if your just running a personal blog that doesn’t rely on being available for members, readers or advertising campaigns then you might not be too bothered by half an hour of down time but for companies who rely on their site being online every minute of the day. A 30 minute or longer down time can have devastating effects on their long term goals.

Why Website Uptime Monitoring Service Matters?

The truth is not all web hosting company can provide 99.9% uptime as many web hosting companies are packing servers with clients and multiple people are sharing servers even on reseller plans.  If you are seeking a stronger and more reliable solution they will need to look into dedicated plans that are either self or fully managed.  The challenge for many small based businesses is that going dedicated requires a huge investment of money each month when a shared or reseller plan would suffice at a fraction of the cost.  So what is the solution? Website monitoring services are, but which ones are the top services in their industry? Why are they the top? And what do you really need vs what they offer?

Key Things to Look For:

  • What is the interval between each time they check your site?
  • What methods do they provide to alert you to down time?
  • What Reporting do they provide for tracking long term site performance?
  • What are the price options?

Track Your Websites With These Uptime Tracking Services

Well, here goes the top 5 uptime website monitoring services.

Pingdom

src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2011/0414-2.jpg" alt="Pingdom" class="border" />

Sam Nurmi is also the founder and previous CEO of Sweden’s biggest web hosting company, Loopia, which he sold in 2005. Pingdom has a very strong and narrow focus. That focus lies on covering the uptime monitoring needs of 90% of the companies in the world. The technology behind Pingdom is developed in house, which gives us an unparalleled ability to satisfy both the current and future needs of the market.

Also, note that Pingdom also offers its services via free apps on href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/pingdom/id298055896?mt=8">iPhone and href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.pingdom.android">Android phones. What’s next if you found your site is down?

So href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/web-hosting-knowledge/your-site-is-down-what-should-you-do/">your site is down, now what? In case you notice that your site is going down at odd hours of the day and for extended periods of time. There are a number of things that could be causing it and a few things you can do short term are:

  • The scripts you are running on your site can add increased strain on servers and usually are responsible for down time
  • Contact your web host and make them aware that you know this is going on as you have reports to show. See what they will do about it. Don’t leap to the assumption that they are aware of it, they may have 1 server and are piling too many people on that server causing added strain or one person on that server could be using a script that is affecting the server and in turn going to cause issues with other sites on that server.
  • Visit href="http://www.DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com">DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com (awesome web tool) and check if your ISP is having connection problem with your name server. If so, contact your ISP to rectify the problem.

For long term solution, href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/web-hosting-knowledge/moving-to-a-new-hosting-checklist-guide/">switching web host might be a good solution if your web host is the one causing the outage.

What can you do to avoid downtime?

  • Be sure to use a website monitoring service that offers checking your site at least every 15 mins
  • Do you homework, read at least a few href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/web-hosting-review/">web hosting reviews to know your choices before you get decided.
  • If you plan on running a service, membership site or store, consider getting a dedicated server as that way you will be the only one on the server and there will be less strain placed on it.
  • Have someone manage your dedicated server – many hosting companies, in fact, offer website monitoring as part of their hosting package (but then again, you gotta make sure that they are trustworthy).

Monitor website uptime from iPhone

alt="Monitor website uptime from iPhone" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/default-image-500x308_c.jpg" />

A new version of Pingdom iPhone app has just released. As expected by many experienced webmasters, the new Pingdom iPhone app 2.0 now comes with push notifications – where you’ll get instant alert on your iPhone when your site goes down.

Push Notifications on Pingdom iPhone app 2.0

Here’s the quick print screen to show how the iPhone app works.

src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2009/1203-9.jpg" alt="Pingdom iPhone App with Push Notifications" class="border" />

Uptime in graphical view

Also, the new Pingdom iPhone apps added a couple of graphical tweaks. Users (both free and paid accounts) can now examine website uptime and response time trend directly from their iPhones. As you can see from figures below, graphs are shown in various date range.

src="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/images/2009/1203-8.jpg" alt="Pingdom iPhone App with graphical tweak" class="border" />

How much does Pingdom iPhone app cost?

This application is totally free if you have a Pingdom account (which can be created for free as well).

However, the free account allows you to monitor one website only. To go further, you will need to purchase a Basic or Business Account. The Basic membership allows you to monitoring five websites concurrently at the cost of .95/mo; while for Business Account, users get to monitor 30 websites and receive up to 200 sms alerts for a price of .95/mo.

Sidenote: What exactly Pingdom does?

In layman term, Pingdom is like a watchdog for your website. The service monitors websites and servers from multiple locations on the Internet to make sure that they are working fine. Pingdom are often used to monitor uptime for websites, FTP servers, mail servers, as well as any other kind of services that should be accessible from the Internet.

Do note that I do not receive any credits from Pingdom writing this post. It’s just because that I am very impressed with their service and think you should at least give the free account a try.

5 Handy Tools To Measure Server Uptime

alt="5 Handy Tools To Measure Server Uptime" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/tracking-time-500x333_c.jpg" />

Server uptime is not something a business owner regularly thinks about. You just expect it to work, right? And it usually does; most providers guarantee href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-review/inmotion-hosting/">nearly 100% server uptime. But even the most skilled IT professionals can’t guarantee perfect server status all of the time (be wary of any that do!).

Cue server uptime tools.

Server uptime tools are valuable for both small business owners and savvy IT professionals (and everyone in between). If you are a small business owner you don’t need to spend every spare minute of your day checking your uptime report, but it is helpful to know when your site is down. If you are an IT professional it is your responsibility to track uptime – and a complete suite of features within a uptime tracking tool is exactly what you need to manage your servers.

Whether you are the small business owner, the IT professional, or somewhere in between, if you are looking for a way to better href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/featured-articles/5-must-see-website-uptime-monitoring-services/">monitor your server uptime, here are five of the top tools available:

March – April 2014 is the month of 100% uptime. I have got two sites scoring 100% uptime (InMotion, WP Engine) for the past 30 days and 8 sites coming extremely close at above 99.95% uptime (Rose Hosting, SiteGround, FatCow, iPage, Media Temple, HostMonster, BlueHost, InMotion Hosting – shared hosting).

Here goes the uptime chart for the Top 3 host in month March/April – InMotion (VPS), WP Engine, and Rose Hosting.

#1 InMotion Hosting (VPS-2000) – 100% Uptime

The Ultimate Guide in Tracking Website Uptime

alt="The Ultimate Guide in Tracking Website Uptime" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/site-down-500x227_c.jpg" />

As you search for a web host, you’ll undoubtedly come across the term “uptime” and all sorts of guarantees surrounding it. But what does it actually mean – and why does it matter?

What is hosting uptime?

Uptime refers to the amount of time that your website is up and running, available to visitors and potential clients; anything that isn’t uptime is downtime – and to oversimplify it, downtime is bad.

Downtime means that people can’t reach your site which can be frustrating to potential visitors while also costing you traffic and revenue. Additionally, if people aren’t able to reach your site the first time, they may not try again. That said, href="http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/hosting-review/ehost/">hosting providers provide minimum uptime guarantees which is a guarantee that they’ll have your site up and running that percent of the total hours in a day. As a general rule, don’t work with providers who give anything less than a 99.9% uptime guarantee.

Why tracking your web host uptime is important

On your end, you’re responsible for monitoring your service and site uptime to ensure you have a clear view of your provider’s performance, but more importantly, so that you’re the first to know when your site goes down; this fast response time is critical. And, yes, your web host of course monitors uptime – but no matter how much you trust your host, you need to monitor your uptime proactively. This helps you to confirm that your web host is making good on their promises and also gives you some level of control over your own site’s performance; think of it as “the more eyes and ears you have, the better.”

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-10002" src="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/site-down.jpg" alt="site down" width="750" height="341" srcset="http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/site-down.jpg 750w, http://whsr.webrevenueinc1.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/site-down-300x136.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" />

So how do you track your website uptime?

So what are the practical methods to track your website uptime? No – you don’t have to check your website every 5 minutes or so in your browser. The quick answer is using web tools to auto-check your site uptime and listed below are some of my favorite tools.

But before we dig into the tools, let’s take a closer look on types of tools available in the market.

Types of Server Monitoring Tools

There are literally dozens, if not more, of server monitoring tools available online – some are free and some costs upwards of thousands of dollars annually. Some run simple HTTP checks to confirm whether your site is running, while others perform very complex back-end jobs to monitor more than 50 checkpoints simultaneously.

The various tools run every end of the spectrum, which can be a bit overwhelming to shoppers, but also ensures that there is a tool out there to fit your needs and budget. For example, free and easy tools include Uptime Robot, Monitor Us, Pingdom, and WHSR’s Uptime monitor, among others. More powerful (and costly) tools include Naios, Cacti, and others.

Regardless of which uptime monitoring tool you go with, it will fit into one of the four types of monitoring: Ping monitor, HTTP monitor, DNS Server Monitor, and TCP port monitor.

style="padding-left: 30px;">Ping Monitor

style="padding-left: 30px;">A Ping monitor basically pings your website to confirm that it’s there and up and running.

style="padding-left: 30px;">Think of it like a virtual ping pong ball; if you serve the ball to a wall, it should hit that wall and come back to you – if the wall is down, the ball isn’t able to connect. Same with a ping monitor – if your site is down, it senses the missing connection and notifies you.

style="padding-left: 30px;">This type of monitoring typically goes a bit above simply letting you know if your site is up, however – it does also provide insight into internet connection speeds and downtime statistics. The connection speed is an important factor, because slow websites are not much better than down sites for visitors, not to mention that slow speeds hurt your Google search rankings.

style="padding-left: 30px;">HTTP Monitor

style="padding-left: 30px;">We use HTTP to transfer data online, using set rules that tell the servers and web browsers which information to exchange. Because it is involved in the constant information exchange that occurs, HTTP monitors provide information about the HTTP traffic between the internet and computer. Advanced settings allow users to glean additional insights, such as whether an SSL certificate is in place.

style="padding-left: 30px;">DNS Server Monitor

style="padding-left: 30px;">Every computer corresponds with a numerical address; the DNS protocol translates the online address to the numerical address. By matching the information and running behind the scenes monitoring of the addresses, the DNS server monitor is able to provide in-depth information about uptime, protocol failures, network outages, and more. Particularly important, should a numerical address mismatch with the online address, the DNS is able to sense it and report the error which may be a result of hijacking.

style="padding-left: 30px;">TCP Port Monitor

style="padding-left: 30px;">The Transmission Control Protocol – or TCP, for short, transfers data from one network device to another network device, using a retransmission strategy to ensure that there isn’t any data loss that occurs during each transmission. Since it is part of quality monitoring and has a hand in establishing host-to-host communications, it becomes apparent quite quickly if there is a connection problem. Should a TCP port fail to respond or receive transmitted information, the monitor will alert the user of the failed or faulty transmission.

style="padding-left: 30px;">It is incredibly important to monitor your site’s uptime to make it successful. There are constant threats in the cyber world and working with a great host who carefully monitors uptime and employs great defenses proactively is the first step; taking secondary measures to monitor yourself is the second and both are equally important.

Last but not least – there’s our home-made uptime monitoring system that does HTTP checks every 5 minutes and sends out unlimited alert emails when your site is down. The system is kind of relatively simple but it’s 100% free and allows up to 10 website checks per account. Also, what makes us different is that we will store your sites uptime records for up to 1 year.

Which Uptime Monitor Service to use?

A few key factors to look into when you are choosing an uptime monitor service are:

  • What is the interval between each check?
  • How is the alert messages sent out?
  • What reporting option does the system provide?
  • What is the price? Do you really need a paid tracking service?

If you look into Johan’s (Monitor Scout CEO) answer to the question in our interview, there’s no one-fit-for-all answer to this problem. Which monitoring tool to choose depends largely on your personal requirements. You should take time to make a comparative study on the offerings of different monitoring service providers listed above.

Johan, there are a handful of website monitoring services around the Internet – Pingdom, Wormly, UptimeRobot, etc etc. How do we choose the right monitoring tool?

As per my experience in the industry, monitoring a server or a webpage is not enough to ensure a bullet-proof situation for your business. Several other aspects need to be monitored. To say for example, your e-commerce store is being affected due to downtime or some other issue; you are losing customers and making a loss. The most feasible solution is monitoring the web pages, the login page, database, hosting server, hardware components, and the vital applications. Choose the monitoring tool that packs in all these opportunities.

When the user finds it difficult to choose between 2 or 3 monitoring companies, the user should contact the customer support of those companies to check if free trial version of their services is available. . All major monitoring companies should be able to offer this to customers that are in the evaluation process.

What’s Next If You Found Your Site Is Down?

Your site is down, now what?

There are a number of reasons that could cause a website to go down. Here are a few immediate things you can do when your site is down:

  • Double check your site uptime with different services – free web apps like href="http://aremysitesup.com/" target="_blank">Are My Sites Up, href="http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/" target="_blank">Down For Everyone or Just Me, and href="http://isitdownorjust.me" target="_blank">Is Up come handy in this situation.
  • Alert your web host about the problem – send in reports you have got from the monitoring service (if any). Don’t leap to the assumption that your hosting provider is aware of the problem.
  • Have an ice cream and wait for your web host to respond. Yes – I am serious! You are at your web host’s mercy in issue like this and this is why I always stress that picking up a good web host is very crucial for your online success. There’s nothing much you can do if your web host is the one causing the outage.
